Thanks for your thoughts. I cautiously agree that the US will return to normalcy, but it will take some time with plenty of trials and tribulations before new leadership returns us to moral solvency.

100% agree but let me add, “Don’t support cable or satellite because the money goes to the lying media and debasing television programs.” I have lived this statement for several years now and I’m wiser, less stressed and much more informed.

MORALS!!!….you mention the word “MORAL” to most kids today, & they will probably say, what’s that is it a new video game, is it cool, has it got lots of blood, & gut’s in it. Our kids are been brainwashed by these games…..I agree with everything that ROGER said……The companys that produce these things are making $BILLIONS, they are not going to stop. BTW i dont think guns should be banned, guns dont kill people…..PEOPLE KILL PEOPLE.

      Jul 27, 2012 27:53 PM

      irish,

You should have seen the defensive comments on CNN about movies and games. People seem desperate they might lose their movies and games. I would submit that if someone fears losing such voyeuristic ugliness from their lives, they are so far gone as to not recognize their compulsion. I haven’t seen a movie in a theatre since Star Wars episode 3, and only saw that because of the long history of the saga. It’s simply beyond my comprehension that anyone can defend that movies and games today don’t influence children.

Roger says he hasn’t seen the games. I have. They’re disgusting. I’m no prude — I grew up in the video game generation and saw ridiculous, Warner Bros violence. Despite it’s violence per se, it was still over-the-top. Today, 1080p graphics of people being blown apart is the norm. I’ve seen 8 year olds playing this. But, this repetitive system knows no end. When defenders of such media have their own children, their opinions sometimes change, but even that is falling away.

I saw a clip on CNN of some guy in New York selling hot dogs. The front of his t-shirt said “Eating meat is murder”, and it has grisly blood streaks imprinted on the shirt. OK, someone making a message, right? On the back of the t-shirt, the so-called message continued: “And murder is delicious!”

I couldn’t make this stuff up. I wouldn’t even want to. I give it about 2 more generations (40-50 years), after which, you know what…

        Jul 27, 2012 27:06 PM

It’s the leaders who have lost their moral compass, the tone for life is set by the people at the top no matter where that is and when they break the rules and get a pass on their sins the guy in the street has now lost his moral compass.

    Hi Al,
Here is an interesting fact that proves the decline of morals; The Legion of Decency was formed in 1934 to combat immoral movies. People took a pledge, in church, against bad movies. They pledged not only never to go to any morally objectionable movie, but never even to go to any movie theater that had ever shown a morally objectionable film. This organization ceased to exist around 1975.

      Jul 27, 2012 27:24 PM

Maybe, in their effort to gain attention, the Legion’s members were also getting a bit repetitive, and starting to look a bit obsessed, Karen…?

Just out of interest I googled the murder rate in the U.S. It doesnt look like its changed much since 1998 and actualy has been decreasing since the peak in 1991 about 24,700 to 2010 14,748.
I think I have more faith in young people than others here, young people I find are very nice to me at least for the most part.
And if we take “the long graph” lol, I believe our morals are better today than the past, we no longer have gladiating or slavery so much, well, still slavery but not like it was.
I guess I just see a brighter future than others This ecinomic “storm” will pass and the day will come when we travel the stars, and maybe we get to tie a few bankers and psychopaths to the outside of the ships on liftoff to boot

@ irish tony. you might be right about people killing,I would just like to say “the gun helped”

      Jul 27, 2012 27:57 PM

I watch those stats too benb. Just keep in mind, though, that many people haven’t been tested yet. Wait until prices (and interest rates) rise, employment drops further, and nest eggs deplete.

In keeping with the Patton quote above, he was also attributed to have said (paraphrase) “All people are 3 days worth of food from anarchy.”

      Jul 27, 2012 27:17 PM

    Jul 27, 2012 27:20 PM

Kal Gronvall is one of the most dour predictors on internet radio. His advice as a first action is to “throw your bowling ball through your television set.” I don’t have a working TV set in my house now because the UK went to a digital signal and I never bothered to get a new aerial. Hopefully a lot of other people chose that moment as a time to stop watching TV.
Like all of these things, it’s good just to “walk away from it.” This includes the media as well as the monetary system. If those who understand walk away from it, it might eventually serve as an example to the rest – but I fear things will get a lot worse before they get better. In the meantime, we need to defend ourselves, economically, spiritually and physically.

      Big Al

    Jul 27, 2012 27:40 PM

    Howdy Benb!

You bring up a good point in regards to the “murder rate” but if you look at “crime rate” that excludes homicides, the U.S. has actually been increasing over the last two years, this includes things like theft, beatings, rape, etc.,. I also found that private agencies who keep track of these types of crime are much more reliable than the U.S. government stats, since it takes much more time to have the events documented. But overall, YES, the homicide rates are down quite significantly.

Also, we could very well be hitting a “cycle” in human history where what the people are “seeing” versus what is being reported has a “lag effect”, meaning many crimes go unreported by the police department simply because they feel they are not important enough to deal with. A great example of that is all the crime THAT HAS BEEN TAKING place within the county I currently live, yet the police are refusing to take reports and even show up UNLESS it is life threatening. So, while the homicide rates are valid, I SERIOUSLY question the overall crime statistics. And it is this, that gives me great pause. Because when we, as a society, begin to ignore most crimes that actually deprive another individual or family of their rights, safety, and prosperity, then we have reached a tipping point. For now we begin to “declassify” crimes and simply place them in the category of ‘bad habits”. It just becomes a snowball effect from there.

Also, while I am not a gun advocate, nor am I an opponent, saying that “the gun helped’ can also be said of the KNIFE that was used to cut up the bodies of two individuals who were found a few days back, in dried creek bed in the county just northeast of here. When sick individuals REALLY WANT to kill, they will find anything they can to commit the act. Yes, guns are an easier way, but I also find it an interesting piece of history when comparing those who had swords and those who did not.

I too am also a bit more optimistic about the future, because I just don’t believe in walking around worried all the time. It is so non-productive.

    Stay frosty!

      Jul 27, 2012 27:13 PM

I completely agree with your last sentence, Mark A!

      Big Al

    Jul 27, 2012 27:09 PM

Hi Mark, gotta agree with you, also if the stats I happened to look at were government they could be “played with” Your definatly right about police not even responding, in which case I would definatly want to own a gun or two.
I am not really for or against either, just mentioned the stats I saw.
Just another thought I had, if we believe in liberty can we put our morals on other people?

      Jul 27, 2012 27:13 PM

Nope! We sure can’t BenB. We sure can’t. And I truly believe THAT IS the whole problem. Yes, I know, somebody reading this is going to call me a ‘hypocrite” based on some earlier response I made on a previous post. But you are absolutely correct my friend! Have a great weekend!

‘America is great because it it is good. When it ceases to be good it will cedase to be great.’ –paraphrasing Tocqueville

Somewhere within the last two decades we reached critical mass in America, a place in time going forward when it became increasingly difficult to tell organized crime from organized government and centralized banking.

We are now completing the journey–legitimizing corruption by institutionalizing it. Taxpayer bailouts of the power elite. Plunge Protection teams for Wall Street. Debauching the world currencies to divest common folk of their life savings. Secret courts, secret police, secret prisons, prisoner renditions, and on and on–none of which can stand the light of day; and none of this has anything to do with capital formation as envisioned by Adam Smith in his treatise on free market economies. None of this at all.

So it is that the Beast is upon us; The corrupt manipulate the befuddled while the blind lead the blind. Or as Big Al might suggest: these are but a few of the fundamentals, the reasons to own gold.

I agree entirely with TR…I personally can watch a movie (and always could) that is violent or unrealistic and except for my childhood and “tweens” I could tell that it was fake and put up purely for profit and entertainment. I personally look forward to seeing dark knight, but won’t become violent from having seen it.

Regarding faith, I personally am agnostic and keep an open mind, choosing to believe that there is some historical significance to the bible. Perhaps I am largely balanced because I was raised in a healthy family where both parents were together and worked.

…What we can do is address areas where the state has intervened in our lives between the 50’s and especially the 60’s and now; especially with regard to welfare, the divorce process and child support payments; I agree with child support…no woman should have to give up living with her children (if that is what the court deems most appropriate whether full or part time) because she makes a lower income than her x husband. People deserve to be safe and secure.

If there can be made an understanding that civility is required between parents upon divorce and each x badmouthing the other or outbidding each other by spoiling the children is unhealthy for the children, and that perhaps parents …then that could go a long way, and could be a partial condition of divorce being granted.

Welfare however, destroys character (as do other means whereby the state provides most or all of one’s income aside from genuine disability) In those situations, as I know AL and Rog agree, people who need everything and depend on the state lose their capacity to be fully functioning self sufficient people. Milton Friedman pointed out in the “free to choose” series that if a person on welfare were offered a job they may not take it for fear of losing it and having to go without income for months while they re-applied for welfare/social security or whatever you want to call it. I would propose, in normal circumstances an “exit benefit” or one time assistance grant to get started in work that may well be in a different state (as there are many oil and gas jobs starting in the US)….If someone had enough to get themselves through to their first real paycheck, (providing they prove that they have been hired) they would be ok. For it to be “one time” or even one time per decade, those who would seek to abuse the system would do so in a very limited way vs. a drug dealer who claims to be unemployed and collects welfare.

These measures, healthy communities that encourage sports and other clubs and parents not allowing their kids to watch tv/play video game s 6 hrs/day would make for a better society.

Christians should be disgusted at the way our churches are disintegrating. The majority are going to sit empty in 15-20 years, when their remaining elderly attendees are gone, and the rest are seemingly reduced to “Just-Think-Positive-Ignore-The-Negative” Hand Holders and apologists for Hollywood-magnified Perverts-In-The-Clergy scandals. The most disgusting ministries are televangelists who sell trinkets with the promise of “Money from Heaven.”

Members and adherents: Can you recall the last time your minister stood up and criticized our leaders and their policies, or told us “DON’T” about something, or even addressed current events? The Ten Commandments are gone from churches in my area. We don’t even sing real hymns anymore — just warm fuzzy campfire ditties.

There was a time when parents played outside with their children. I’m not that old, and remember when it was unthinkable not to dress up your children for Sunday school. Up until the early 80s, “Day Care” was unthinkable — something the Communist Russians did!

Erosion of traditiional values is an essential step in the destruction of a nation. Consider how Agenda 21 attempts to rewrite our sense of right and wrong in teh context of our evil emissions and need to pay carbon tax as penance for our environmental “sins.”

Sure, we face some kind of great reckoning. We have permitted our system to be hijacked and ruined by the worst people, and forgot what matters. VALUES BEGIN AT HOME.

      Jul 27, 2012 27:28 PM

do you listen to Stan Monteith on radio liberty? I do sometimes for his current events section…but I listen at night to radio liberty on the internet link…its good stuff and he goes into depth about agenda 21among all other current, controversial issues. the video “brotherhood of darkness” is something everyone should see!

    Jul 27, 2012 27:02 PM

What I found disturbing is that hunger games movie. Kids killing other kids? Seems to be big media is testing the population to see the reaction. Just dont understand how this is entertainment. My inlaws kids are good kids but knew about this movie and had read the books. Kind of a soccer-mom type family I found it odd that they were onto this type of story. Not sure how this stuff gets so popular.

      Jul 27, 2012 27:35 PM

Not sure how this stuff gets so popular.

All you need do is set-up any premise where one antagonist has done something horrible. Now the protagonist can use any and all means to mete out justice. Cue the gore and suffering, done ‘in righteousness’. It’s a formula, like so many others. I studied scripting for a time, hoping (like many) for a secret career. It’s been said there’s only 7 story lines to anything (tragedy, redemption, finding love, etc). Once those became passe, reality TV and gratuitous violence, which bolster an individual’s super ego, were all that’s left. It’s so successful we even see the techniques used on the news. I cannot stand shock-jock anything. The Paddy Cheyefsky’s NETWORK has become reality. It only took 1 generation. Everyone saw it coming. And no one gives a $#&*.

We always abhor a Columbine, or Waco, or now an Aurora. But another one’s coming. And then another. And they’ll keep increasing in frequency.

    Jul 27, 2012 27:40 PM

a question: If the entertainment industry is responsible for the violence that goes on these days, then why do the vast majority of people entertained by this industry not commit acts of violence? Historically: was Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein responsible for the modern Prometheus?

Is there a confusion between reflection and that which is reflected?

      Jul 27, 2012 27:40 PM

Good question James, but define “violence”.

I cannot see how video games today which show people being chain-sawed to death, or someone in a movie getting disemboweled in 3D cannot possible de-sensitive a person. As a separate issue, I’m also unable to see anything entertaining about such graphics. Then again, I also tend to study the reasons why war or suffering are caused. Many people, not so inclined, get to live out some fantasy watching such content. To each his own, I guess.

        Jul 28, 2012 28:44 AM

Committing physical injury upon another individual without their prior consent is more or less how I would define violence.

Video games do have fantasy violence, but think about how many wars occurred before they were invented. Surely WW1, for example, was much more terrible than anything that went on in Aurora, as horrible as that is, and video games cannot be responsible for WW1.

The point about desensitization is a fair one. It is used in Psychology systematically to improve the lives of those with problems. In the case of video games I imagine there is desensitization to violence in some way, though I would think movies with characters looking real would be worse. I recall watching the movie Robocop as a teenager – when the man’s hand was blown off callously before he was shot in the head – I was horrified watching that, whereas my younger brother laughed. But in all the years in between, my brother hasn’t even gotten into a fight, and has worked or studied since he was 19. He is 30 now with a good, well paying, steady job.

I wonder if the individuals that commit acts like those in Aurora would merely have different methods or fantasies if they had never played video games or watched violent movies? WW1 didn’t need video games to be a hideous blood bath, and it would be a real stretch to think the root cause was literature like Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.

    Jul 28, 2012 28:23 AM

Good points from both of you gentlemen! I haven’t read all the comments above nor have I been immersed in much of the pudit talk after Aurora. One thing I haven’t heard addressed is simply this: the youngest person murdered was a 6-year-old child. What has become of parental good sense when a mother takes one so young and impressionable to a midnight showing of such stuff?

    hal
    Jul 28, 2012 28:34 AM

Al, there is a larger problem that you are touching on and its rather complex. The culture of this country has changed and is continuing to trend away from what made it great.

In the past, immigrants entered the country and more or less assimilated to the culture. Now, they come here and work on changing the culture. Ie-just look at the big states where most immigrants flock to; California, IL NY–all having financial problems because there are more “takers” than “producers”

Somehow the welfare system supports these folks without control. The country and system enables the “takers” to not forge ahead. The system also allows them a good life to buy the computer games you speak of.

we are headed in the wrong way in so many ways.

Years ago there was a saying that “we take care of our own”. Now you look to govt for unemployment, food stamps (SNAP) , disability and I wouldnot be surprised if these same folks made money in the underground economy and did not report the income.
    \
Lying and cheating is at many levels: Obamacare costs were reduced by increasing tqxes–What they should have done is start with the gross annual new costs–and then show how real savings would be achieved. Its all a fraud and our society is a fraud.

The movies are written, produced and directed by Hollywood liberals-the same ones who show strong support for the Democrats because , imo their customers are those who mostly vote democratic and they have a vested interest in this constituency doing well so they can spend money on movies. And when do you see hollywood being vilified by the President. And will you see him vilifying Hollywood? Bet not.

I could go on and on but not enuf time to type this. This is a country of vested interests.

Charles Schumer: Get to work Mr Chairman. That says it all. Take the quick and dirty and short term solution. print money. No balls in DC to do the right thing.

thats how you deflect serious issues.

      Jul 29, 2012 29:51 PM

My impression, Hal, is that Chicago is a pretty dangerous place to be.

We do have some close friends; however, who live on Lakeside Blvd (or is it Lakeshore) and they absolutely love it.

After a speaking engagement at the Radez conference last year, Kathy, I, Del Steiner, Elli Steiner and Christine Kopr stayed in the Windy City and went to a number of blues clubs. As was the case on the subway in New York, my faith was restored by the crowds in all three of the clubs.

      What can I say?

I cannot dispute your argument that America’s media standards have collapsed and that National morals are extinct. My Physician, when asked what he would do to “prep” for a disaster replied immediately, “stock up on anti-depressants. Not for you, but for all the crazies out there who will un-hinge when their prescription runs out.” We are still groping to find the cause of Columbine, or Aurora, or Giffords, or the Regan shooting. Our over medicated society fails to recognize the hazard of mind altering legal medications. Perhaps Big Pharma has too much profit yet to harvest in this sector….
