Ranting Andy Hoffman made some interesting comments on the PDAC roundtable with Grant Williams, John Mauldin and Rick Rule that Al chaired. Rather amusing I thought! I agree with what Andy Hoffman said about people who say “Oh it’s OK if gold goes down so I can buy some more. Ity is at this link, at the 12:00 minute mark.

Grant makes a good point on the interview onthis page, the good news is all forward looking statements! The bad news is now. Well, there are regulations regarding forard looking statements in the private sector – but the government and central bankers can talk BS about future recoveries all day long! And they can choose their accounting methods as they see fit for themselves.

There is an interview with elstablishment economist John Kay on GoldMoney’s podcasts page (episode 106). He talks a load of drivel because he’s a true believer in the system but one thing he did say is that he thought Mervyn King (whom he knows) was glad to be retiring imminently, so you might read into that that the BS is about to hit the fan!

Some big name brands are shrinking products by up to a quarter while keeping or even increasing the original price, a study has found.

Among the everyday products identified by the Which? consumer group were a pack of Birds Eye beef burgers with four fewer burgers than the original 16 despite the price increasing from £3.98 to £4.29 in Asda, Morrisons and Tesco.

Pledge furniture polish has shrunk by 17% but the price has stayed the same or risen, Nestle Munchies dropped from 150g to 126g with a disproportionate price drop from £1.67 in Asda and Sainsbury’s to £1.59, and Thorntons Mini Caramel Shortcakes increased in cost by 10p in Waitrose despite shrinking from 12 cakes to 10.

The study found “anything from bags of crisps to packs of dishwasher tablets are getting smaller”.

The watchdog said it was generally told by the product makers that they chose to shrink products rather than increase prices to cope with rising costs.

However, a poll of consumers by Which? found 58% would prefer prices rose than packs got smaller, while 37% would rather the pack shrank but only if they were informed. Just 3% said it was acceptable for the pack size to shrink and not be told about it.

Which? added that many of the manufacturers it spoke to said retailers ultimately set prices, but when asked if they reduced the wholesale price or set a lower recommended retail price to match shrinking products they either said they did not do this or would not comment.

Nestle said it had dropped the cost price but refused to say if it was proportionate to the amount its products shrank by, while Thorntons said shrinking allowed for better promotions.

Which? executive director Richard Lloyd said: “Shrinking products can be an underhand way of raising prices because pack sizes shrink but the prices don’t. We want simpler pricing so people can easily compare products to see which is the cheapest, and for special offers to be genuine.”

Which? surveyed 1,257 members in January.

I just find that the groceries I wait to buy on sale just aren’t coming on sale anymore. The only grocer that hasn’t started jacking prices across the board is Wal-Mart, and I hate to patronize that place, but the bottom line is the bottom line…!

Had you not noticed? Cereal boxes becoming less full. Tins/cans of vegetables and fruit; first 16 oz, then 15oz, now even down to 12 oz; making the price increases APPEAR less than they are.

Tesco’s “family values” brand is cheaper than even Aldi or Lidl though, for the staples.
Beats US prices. Aldi is the cheapest over here, although some farmers’ markets are pretty good in the summer.

    This just in: http://www.newsru.com/finance/21mar2013/cyprusmedvedev.html

Medvedev today who admitted that most Russian government agencies use Cyprus for it’s financial transactions.

    A few points here:

-How corrupt does a country have to be for its government agencies to use a tax haven for financial transactions?

-From latest reports, the Cypriot banks might open on March 26th at the earliest. That’s two weeks after being shut down. That’s two weeks of unmet financial obligations, ie government employee salaries, public works financing, unpaid pensions etc etc…Expect unrest on the streets of Moscow

-The EU/Germany are certainly aware that 95% of all Russian money goes through the Cypriot banks. Certainly they were well aware of the consequences this would lead to. Is this the first salvo in the new world war??

1944 a chocolate bar was 6-7 cents. If you watch “band of brothers” there is a scene where a guy gives one to a kid, check the size. We have had this reducing package size etc from 1914. Nothing new, but it is interesting how many people dont notice.

On another site economic and world events, I am informing people that gold is money.
economics 101, first day, first sentence, gold is money, everything begins from there.
But people dont know it, nor will they until they have no other option.

I wonder now if those people attempting to educate people dont make themselves a target. An old expression “dead men tell no tales”

My brother used to do magic tricks, on a Friday night he would float a dollar bill, he wouldnt go back till Monday, invariably he found out the story was he floated the pool table.

If you tell people about PMs and they increase or become valuable at some point, I am certain stories will circulate that you have great amounts of gold in your home.

Maybe there was a reason for the expression, “dead men tell no tales”

Al — Glad to hear your back is better. I missed visiting the site recently, so just learned about your discomfort. If it’s spasm-related, it might help to drink a glass of Pedialyte electrolyte drink when you feel the trouble coming on. A doctor recommended it to me and I find it extremely useful for relaxing tight muscles. I have also been advised to make sure I take enough Magnesium and stay hydrated with antioxidant teas like Rooibos. Those are some things that have helped me a lot. Rgds

Fact: The economy and world events in last decade have been getting worse and worse.
Fact: Present conditions of economy and governments is bad and getting worse.

Prognosis: Future economy and political events are going to be worse than today. It is a waste of time and effort to try and explain these facts to anyone that refuses to seek truth. Do not throw pearls to the swine.
