I do have some US stock and they went up 10%. it used to work the other way. I have friends who lost a lot of money in US dollar when loonie was rising from 61 cents to dollar ten. You never know.

I looked at the Loonie and its still getting SMASHED against the USD…This sure reduces our options…this is surprise and sucks…
And people are waiting for USD crash…The Loonie looks more like toilet paper to me…I was on record that USD is not in a bubble like Bob M mentioned…Its still going parabolic and maybe for reasons unknown yet…
Did I mention this sucks…We were looking to migrate south…A mil purchase is now 1.3 mil and it ain’t going to happen…

Currencies don’t float, they sink at different rate at different time. As financial guy, there should be no surprise on this. Canada is resource economy so resource drops, loonie drops. Personally I hope loonie drops more to save my province. Sorry for the rest of Canada. It is good for Ontario as well for its export. I am sure Ontario will start to add jobs.

It really depends on when someone purchased the gold and at what pricepoint they purchased the gold at, and the strength of the dollar at that time. It isn’t as simple as the loonie fell against the dollar so you could have held gold or dollars.

If during the 2008-2009 financial crisis a Candian purchased 10,000 Loonies of Gold and converted 10,000 Loonies into US dollars, then they would have preserved and magnified their wealth in the Gold far more than parking them in dollars in a savings account or CD or Money Market over the last 7 years. That major difference is that Gold went up massively in global value, in combination with the devaluation of the Loonie versus the Dollar. For the last 7 years savers have been punished, so to get a rate of return above inflation people have had to go into equities or commodities.

Therefore, when the Canadian currency gets devalued so quick, then the people holding Gold not only retain purchasing power but have also received a multiplier effect of rise in the value of Gold since 2008 that far outstrips anything you could make in a banking deposit product or even a fixed annuity.

Basically you were much better off in Gold than dollars in the last 7 years anywhere in the world, and waaaay better off in Gold than most local currencies.

I agree Shad, it matters a lot when you bought gold as to how well you fared in Loonies. And it matters a lot when you converted to USD as to how well you protected buying power against a Loonie in decline. If we only look at this past year though (which is the period in question when the dollar was soaring) it made almost no difference which you chose, gold or dollars. If you go back a couple years then the changes favour gold.

And by the way, we did see gold rise just pennies above my 1285 target price for the Friday close which is the peak as I see it. From here we will see gold prices turn back down. That is my technical take. The declines will begin Monday premarket. Stocks will be up and Crude is also on a buy. Any more questions?

Next stop 1240.” Now put those bearish expectations together with this claim of yours: ” Well Peter went long and I went short.” and I would say that we have ourselves a little loser in Birdman. You expected lower lows so there is NO reason to believe that you covered in time to avoid losses.

You keep claiming the bottom is not in and this rally will fail to go higher then 1347 etc.. Please I urge you to put up a chart for us to see what you are seeing.

Timing had no relevance to the discussion although my call was made midday and before the close. My contention remains that we will decline back to 1200. The bounce has completed and gold will turn down.

The problem here is you seem incapable of understanding that ALL of those numbers are in play in my opinion. Not in a single day you fool. We obviously need to hit 1240 on our way to 1200 and yes I will be short selectively as it progresses.
