Great discussion of the” wash and rinse cycle” for gold taking place over on the LBMA by the ‘market makers’, and how the commercials distort the COTs. More interesting is how the latest rollover price action outside the “sweet spot” at options expiration suggests a big squeeze may be on the horizon.

It is definitely a stock-pickers market. As far as the miners, I am most comfortable currently with specific companies in 3 groups of miners:
1) My favorite are Smaller Producers (like Claude) that have active mines, UPSIDE improving economics and cost containment, UPSIDE from their exploration targets, and management with a track record. Most of these stocks are insanely undervalued, and later this year and into 2016 the marketplace will re-rate these.
2) Streaming companies – I think this business model, the success, and the ability to survive tough markets due to residual income streams from Royalties and Streaming Agreements are a must. (Silver Wheaton, Royal Gold, Sandstorm Gold, and Franco Nevada are the main players but there are new companies forming). These companies expose you to upside from exploration an increase in the price of the underlying commodity, but also offer stability from cash-flow and they aren’t the ones with the mine employee, equipment, or structural issues. They are invested in the success of the mines, but have spread their risk over multiple projects and mines, not just 1 or 2.
3) Exploration and Project Generating companies – In this group there are just too many and most will fail or just don’t have the ability to raise money in these markets and 90% will be out of business in 10 years. However, there are a few gems in this bunch that will have the largest percentage gains, and will either be bought out or have one of their projects purchased by Mid-tier producers or Majors. The few good companies with good projects, good resource estimates in place, Prefesibility or Feasibility studies completed or near-completed, $3-$10 million in cash to survive the next few years, and especially ones in a Joint-Venture situation or some partnership with a larger Mid-Tier or Major already. Many of these are priced so low it makes your head turn to do the math, on stock price versus ounces in the ground/cost to pull metals out of the ground. Some are sitting on a fortune, and will be take-out targets later this year and next.
* Exeter and International Tower Hill Mines really don’t have the partnerships with Majors at this point, (but everyone is watching their deposits grow and know they’ll be up for grabs soon).
Even a company like Rye Patch, featured on this site, is attractive from the standpoint that they are in a safe jurisdiction (Nevada) with an income stream from Coeur from the NSR and a number of resources they continue to drill out and define. With the rate that Coeur (CDE) is gobbling up smaller companies, it wouldn’t surprise me to see them take out Rye Patch down the road and recoup that NSR they are paying them.
Regardless there are some interesting stories not just in Gold and Silver, but in Base Metals, Oil, and Uranium like this where there is a Major or Mid-Tier company partnered with, partially invested in financing or in stock ownership, and make these smaller exploration plays prime suspects for a takeover.

Right now Greece is in between a titanic struggle of Troika having to throw it major concessions, or whether Greece chooses to accept financial aid from Russia, and in so doing both lift sanctions as well as leaving the EU for good. Russia would love nothing more than to remove the pawns of Greece and Turkey over to their said of the chess board. A move surely that would spell the death knell of the entire EU. Yes?

Greece does not want to leave the EU. Syriza just wants to renegotiate the debt which they believe is unfair, and to scrap the deals that were made by the previous government and the various oligarchs. The only way Greece leaves the EU is if they get kicked out. Other than that, they will stay.
Also, Rev, it’s in the best interest of Russia not to align themselves with Greece and Turkey. The partnership will go up in flames. Greece and Turkey do not like each other, and they will not work together.

Turkey would want a piece of that deal as well. So I don’t know if that will work. Half of Cyprus belongs to Turkey.

Funnily enough Mr Iker, the BBC’s ‘From our own correspondent’ this morning touched on the very topic of Spain’s anti-austerity party, assembling I believe in one of your main sport’s stadiums. It seems that voters who were once on the far right are now readily moving in the opposite direction towards this new party, and doing so in droves, with the rallying cry as so typically heard everywhere being that most of your politicians are corrupt. So it seems that many Spanish are also growing desperate for a root and branch change.

Way back 220 years ago our forefathers understood that the domestic enemies of the Constitution are as dangerous or more dangerous than the foreign enemies.

I’ve just re-checked the story of the passenger liner the St Louis (DVD and book by the name of ‘Voyage of the damned’), which of course was a propaganda exercise by Goebbels to let some 900+ Jews go to Cuba in 1935. On reaching Cuba they of course got turned back. But not only that, the ship was then chased off from the shores of Florida forcing it to return to Europe. It’s well known that prior to WW2 the U.S. had a distinctly anti-Semitic policy (Henry Ford’s gifts to the National Socialist for example, or Hollywood sanitising its films so as not to offend the Nazis, etc). The vast reparations made to the Jews post WW2 and from 1948 onwards have surely been to compensate for the earlier sins of the U.S.

Tony, Agree in general but you don’t have to balance in one particular show. It is to say the show itself will suit the need of its majority listeners and do not have to bring in some obvious wrong opinion which most of its members don’t agree with. One example being KWN.even a lot of people ridicule it, its members love it. This forum is mostly hard asset investors and independent thinkers. It is not necessary to bring mass media propaganda into this show. Otherwise people will leave. Everyone get finite amount of time. If I find some show which make me uncomfortable, I will move on. Good morning Al. I was unimpressed with your first guest. He described Putin as a liar which I am sure he is but the subtle implication was that our guys don’t lie which is comical. However the most egregious fault that I found in his analysis is that he doesn’t even consider the possibility that the growth of Islamic terrorism could be attributed to our misguided and destructive foriegn policy. Maybe these people just don’t like being killed and watching their countries being bombed and occupied by our military is at least a slight turn off to them.

The Ukraine army’s chief of staff has admitted that Kiev troops are not engaged in combat with Russian units, thereby thwarting all Western allegations of Moscow’s “military invasion,” said Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov.
“Yesterday afternoon the Chief of the General Staff – Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine – Viktor Muzhenko officially acknowledged during a briefing for foreign military attachées that Russian troops are not involved in the fighting in the country’s southeast,” Konashenkov said on Friday.
Given the fact that Muzhenko directly supervises military operations in the southeast, “his statement is a legal fact, which thwarts numerous accusations made by NATO and Western states” concerning Russia’s alleged “military invasion” in Ukraine, the spokesman added.
On Thursday, Muzhenko said “the Ukrainian army is not engaged in combat operations against Russian units.” He added, however, that he had information about Russian individuals fighting in the country’s east. He also said the Ukrainian army has everything it needs to drive off armed units in Donbass. His speech was aired by Ukraine’s Channel 5 television, owned by President Petro Poroshenko

The Dow on Friday closed closed below a Weekly Bearish Reversal. The main support begins under the market at 16300 level followed by 15961. The potential Waterfall is rather weak. Nonetheless, the oscillators are also turning negative. We still see a correction and basing into May. Keep in mind, that it is unlikely we will see a major crash for foreign capital will be buying the dips. Next week should provide a turning point. Volatility will rise from the week of 02/23 onward. Key support also lies at 16935-16970 level followed by 16680. A daily closing below 16975 should signal pressing a bit lower. Long-term support lies at the 14300 level for the year.

Bird, I heard that Americans are famous for not saving anything. Most people go from pay check to pay check. This 2.15 trillion translate up to $30,000 CASH per family. I feel that I am a big saver but I definitely don’t keep that much cash.

Hi Jerry, there were two articles but I can only link one at a time. The second discusses the 29% of households that are hoarding cash. I don’t think this refers to people literally keeping it in their sock drawers and mattresses though.
But I don’t know the facts on this and as Lawrence pointed out that number is pretty big on a per person basis especially as we know up to two thirds of the population do not have two thousand dollars cash available to meet any given emergency.
So I dug around around a little and came up with some interesting material. One article from Forbes talks about 14 Trillion in cash being hoarded by corporations, banks and the wealthy. But that’s not exactly the same topic when banks are included. Maybe read that article first and then I will add the link from Martin in the next post.

The figure of 2.15 trillion in cash and checking account balances held by Americans comes from the Federal Reserve itself according to an article I located at Investors Insights.
It is a pretty interesting read actually. I was quite surprised because I was not aware of just how much cash hoarding was taking place nor how much (on average) was being set aside for a rainy day. It sure speaks to lack of confidence in the economy when you get that kind of reaction and its creating an economic drag as folks batten down the hatches in anticipation of worse days ahead.
The article mentions how this has driven velocity rates to historical lows.
There are eerie parallels to the Great Depression which is the last time this happened. Anyway, getting back to the point, Mr Armstrong has noted what should be obvious to anyone following the savings rates. It is that households hoard “cash” and not gold.
I realize that drives some on this site apoplectic since of course only gold is money in their world, but the simple fact is that gold is NOT money for the vast majority of citizens so we need to get over that outdated notion. You know, this would make a great topic on the Korelin Report. If Cory can find someone knowledgeable to talk about what is happening to US savings rates and who exactly is holding all the loot.
Another chart I had showed a slightly different picture where the average savings rates were in long term decline so maybe the hoarding is taking place primarily amongst the minority.
That tells me those with resources and large relative cash hoards will be in an excellent position to go on a buying spree as asset prices begin to finally decline. We often discuss the great transfer of wealth that is on the horizon. I suppose this is how it begins.
What is peculiar is that it means wealth disparity and inequality will grow wider as the economy turns down in the next few years which is not exactly what happened during the last Depression.
At that time, it was the wealthy who suffered the greatest losses (because they held the most assets and were also the most leveraged). But this time around, with rich households bolstering cash balances they won’t suffer the same fate provided they have personal debt under control.
So what does that mean? Well, it tells me there are going to be ready buyers of fire sale priced equities, property, homes and other assets as the economy goes into contraction and that the rich will indeed become quite a bit richer while the poor may be pushed over the brink with little chance of recovery for many years.
We will become a nation of rentiers where a slim minority control the lions share of all homes and lands. Call if Feudal America if you like. The rise of the modern day peasant is just over the horizon. Kind of scary isn’t it? (I mean if you didn’t save of course!)
Anyway…the quick conclusion I come to is that wealth inequality is what is driving the lack of economic activity since the GFC. It is the declining share of the economy previously held by middle class spenders that is holding us back. If too few wealthy simply save and hoard then of course velocity will fall for everyone and fewer dollars will circulate to stimulate growth. But how do you fix that in an age of labour surplus, lack of organized labour to press for wage increases, a flattening of wages across the world due to globalization and free trade and the rise of automation which further increases surplus labour and depresses the equitable distribution of money amongst the majority of people?
If 14 trillion is true, then people may just hoard electronic Signals. There is only 4.7 trillion dollar money supply, even every cent is saved, it cannot reach 14 trillion. When people want to take their money out, what can they get? apologies from the bank or riot police?
The average person IMO is hoarding debt not cash. And that person you so speak about or person’s you speak about reading to go shop when recession/depression hits is the rich guy. The rich get richer the poor get poorer. But history has a tendency to fix that problem and reckoning day will come. The u.s will not be immune to what’s coming. The forces are much more powerful then any army or corrupted political agenda in office. Burn in hell they will.
Well I sure agree that debt is the everyman problem. That’s going to be a big issue when asset prices like homes start to fall in price again. It means we get another cycle where those with ready cash get to pick up properties at a fraction of the old highs. As long as we appreciate that during a deflation it is the dollar rising at the same time assets can be crashing. The effect is therefore compounded very favorably for those who are prepared and are also debt free. And that’s when we see the great shift in wealth from weak hands to strong and a renters society on the rise. The first major transfer was in the 30’s when farms were lost to the hardships of the Depression and its poor economy. The next one will be when private homeowners are disenfranchised and turned from owners to renters. I am not saying it is right…..only that is what is actually going to take place. The most acute losses are going to be felt where independence and pride of home ownership are concerned. Hell, it has already begun with stage one of the housing bubble in 2006. The next leg down will be more bitter than the last.

Great point. That is part of why we are eventually going to a full electronic currency. Consider this Lawrence, under a system of electronic money there can NEVER be a bank run because there is not paper money that can go into shortage.
Any financial crisis can be dealt with from a keyboard at a remote location. The gold bugs are wrong that Central Banks will be eliminated or that the Fed will go the way of the Dodo. On the contrary, the importance of Central Banks will increase substantially as they take a pivotal role in the management of the new currency format.
i believe they will have expanded powers in the future and will be linked globally in ways that are barely considered today. That is part of how a new global currency will arise that will be acceptable across the nearly 200 nations on earth. So there won’t be anymore stampedes of desperate pensioners lining up outside banks.
Hell, we do almost all our business online already. This is hardly a jump.
But there is more. I think we will see corporate currencies on the rise. That is money backed by the earning power and assets of business and it is money that will be every bit as good as what we hold in our wallets today. Apple and its mobile money are an good example of this evolution that is in progress but there are many others on the rise.
It begins with transaction processing but ends with a universal, borderless currency.

Yes Tony, he said cash although it is now clear he did not necessarily mean just physical cash but rather checking and savings deposits plus physical cash that essentially earn no interest. This is what some might refer to as money on the sidelines. It can be deployed during a time of economic dislocation and would soften the blows of a crisis that might evolve. It is probably comforting to know that if there is cash available then there is also money to bid on falling assets.

No, I am saying that in the big scheme there is no material difference between paper cash and electronic money if that is what we choose to accept in transactions and trade. But there are benefits you get when it is electronic versus the physical that are appealing and one of them is that bank runs will not be an event anymore nor will the riots that accompany them. Bird, physical law makes it impossible to hoard more Cash than money supply. It means if one guy takes the money out, the other guy can not have it. If electronic currency makes this possible and people Can buy goods with it, it instantly create money because many more times of goods and service can be bought but those are limited by physical supply. When poeple go out and buy, supply and demand balance make it that majority people cannot get the goods and service. Is this a classic inflation scenario?
Bird unless bank allows all transaction to go through the cards will be deactivated when too many people use it to buy stuff. This is an equivalent of bank run. You can not withdraw paper money or you card does not work makes no difference. I personally programmed many software solutions, trust me that the formula is running for any transaction. It is called transaction since any deal has to be reconciled with related quantities such as your personal account balance and available cash pool. Only when every thing is ok before the purchase can go through. Without this, no bank can survive this far.
Lawrence, according to the Federal Reserve there was 1.34 trillion in US currency circulating as of January 2015. Of that, 1.3 trillion were FRN’s. That is just a fraction of the total money supply which currently stands at almost 4 trillion dollars.
We have read reports that a majority of all printed notes of the US government actually reside overseas so are not actually in use in the States. The St Louis Fed claims that number could be as high as 60% suggesting as little as 500 billion dollars of notes are held and used in America.
500 billion in peanuts in the larger scheme of things. That’s less than 2k per person.
So actually it is possible for a large percentage of physical paper notes to be hoarded which could cause problems for monetary management if it were not for electronic money being available.
But how much of that is mattress money and how much is hidden stock that does not see the light of day? I don’t know if anybody knows the answer to that but we can bet that during a financial panic a large percentage of the remaining notes would disappear from circulation almost overnight.
So my question to you is this….
Do you think it is prudent to rely too heavily on physical printed notes at a time like this when financial discord is on the rise and do you really doubt that there are steps afoot to ensure the smooth functioning of the system via electronic means to get around the problems created by the hoarding of those notes (depression style)?
I think you can guess the answer. We are going fully electronic by the time the next crisis passes and the public will DEMAND it just so the system functions properly again. Not only will gold be a relic but so will paper money by the end of the day.

We will have to wait and see bb. To me it is interesting to learn just how serious the hoarding of cash has already become. How far must velocity fall before the public starts screaming for solutions though? Not that they even need to understand that velocity of money is the problem but only that jobs are disappearing and cash money is suddenly in serious shortage. Totally depressionary stuff. I don’t think we should doubt that the monetary authorities around the globe have not already taken this into account. Liquidity can be injected via electronic means though to offset the behaviors that are mostly driven by fear. Was the Fed not pondering literal cash transfers to the public not so long ago? This is just one example of what they are trying to avert. Hoarding as an outcome of shortages leads economies into crisis no matter what the commodity whether it be sugar, flour, cooking oil or physical paper money. So steps need to be taken to offset the effect. I think the public will demand alternative money at the right moment. And I think most of us are ready to live without paper cash as long as a good alternative replaces it.
Us old guys will all be gone eventually bb. And the kids will decide what is money. My grandfather grew up in a day when gold ans silver coins still circulated. They used bank drafts then. I was raised with credit cards and cheques but now i have graduated to online banking. The kids buy Lattes with their I-phones and the biggest company in the world processes their transaction instead of a bank!

Bird, by law FRN and electronic bank account balance is same thing. There are far less physical paper than total money supply. Due to the fact same paper amount of money buys the same as bank card, the only difference is media they use. However, there is a key difference, bank can deactivate your card at any moment even you still have balance in case of a bank run equivalent of electronic world. It is to say, the money in the bank may not be yours. I think all of us had experience with card not working. It is a very quick way to send people to the street since people have bills to pay and they need food and shelter. Imagine one day all your cards don’t work and you have nothing with you. How can you survive? Are you worried? I remember I read something about 1930s. People lost their job and cannot pay their rent and mortgage for the house and land, The banks sent guards to shoot anyone who dare to come into their own house. When there is no way of payment, fittest survives. Machine guns and cold heart will definitely work better than gold. You might say that government just make all the card function, the it is as bad since people will use their card to get anything they want to clear up the shops.
Electronic banking only give convenience but you hand out control of your own life. It does not solve the supply demand balance between money and goods. Too money much chasing same amount of goods will result in inflation regardless what form the money is. It could be bitcoin.
The more things change, the more they stay the same. Digital money, debt based dollars, it’s all the same, and it will continue to devalue over time, like all such money has. Gold will never become worthless because human nature has determined over and over again there is no better money than gold. There is something about the durability, beauty, permanence, and rarity that appeals to us in gold. And that, like human nature, has never changed.

It’s very interesting you say that because we are seeing Gresham’s Law in action right now with so many high net worth people hoarding paper dollars. That is an expression of doubt in some financial instruments and the realization we are closing in on what looks like troubling times ahead. As crazy as it sounds, physical dollars in your hand are functioning much as gold once did. They have no counterparty risk and cannot be evaporated away in a credit meltdown.
It certainly does seem that paper dollars are functioning as commodity money in the growing cashless society. They do have the advantage of being incapable of being shut down or closed out, after all.
They are not without counterparty risk, however, as a US dollar is in reality, someone else’s liability. They are promissory notes, non-interest bearing bonds.
Technically yes but as a matter of practice they give a holder some reassurance of value in case of a financial meltdown that cannot be evaporated to dust the day the trouble arrives. Long term is another story of course but between now and next year they are a good security blanket should a liquidity event arrive.

I mentioned previously as well that I believe it was a bear trap. Regardless one must keep open minded.
Glen, assuming you’re talking about the big picture, I don’t want to see a monthly close below 1205; a weekly close below 1192; or a daily close below 1188. In other words, the lows that had held for over a year before the October ’14 downside breakout. Shorter term, I want to see 1240 hold. Some of the salient supports are the 50 week sma/55 week ema at about 1268; the 233 day ema at 1259/ 200 day sma at 1255; the 1240 area; then there’s the declining neckline of the inverse H&S pattern and the 50/55 day moving averages. Last but not least is the lower uptrend channel support. Notice that gold was able to bullishly close above the channel on Friday.

I just happen to think that some have thicker skin then others. Matt has taken his own lumps and poundings from bird on a constant. It’s a two way sword and I agree needs to stop on both ends. The problem I see is no matter what Matt does to place nice, bird will make a comment as to bait him in. He does it constantly and many in here know it and have grown to ignore it. Does not take a wizard like vortex 🙂 to read in between Bird’s lines at times and know he is taking jabs. It is what it is and it will never stop. Birds got me thinking now, paper is good, the risk is theft or fire, digits a bank run or it closes or a bail in. Is risk whichever way a person decides, anyway, what do you mean when you say cash?
BB, cash is what ever you can use to buy goods and service without incurring a liability. So electronic cash is cash as well. Paper cash is a risk to the system. Electronic cash shift a lot of risk to the people. Government and banks can shut people out of the system by confiscate their cash instantly in a crisis. They cannot do it in a paper cash stem.
Why would they shut you out of the system during a financial crisis if the object in relieving the crisis conditions meant that people needed ready cash at a time when paper cash was not available? Your post makes no sense to me.
Bird, does it make sense to you if too much electronic cash or whatever is issued, there will be empty shields. Then hyper inflation will become a reality. Only way to avoid that is to force people to stop shopping. What else can you do but deactivate the account. The old way usually abandon the currency and create with a new one. It happened infinite times. At least in my old country, government was overthrown. What will you do in a crisis? Trust your government to fix everything or run out to buy what you can? Lawrence, I think maybe we are on a different wavelength today. Can you tell me why there would be “too much” electronic money? I was not talking about creating money without any end. I am only talking about changing the format of money. Most of our money supply is ALREADY electronic which I pointed out in an earlier post. Just because we go to phone money or bits and bytes does not mean it becomes unlimited or that all money must be spent in a day and all goods must be supplied immediately. Try to think about what I am saying. You will not carry paper currency. It does not mean your bank balance is automatically bigger though or that you need to spend it all.

Sine the money is already in the system and more will be created, it is prone to bank runs or its electronic equivalentce, using card to buy everything. If you think central banks can just let people spend the money to buy stuff, just look at Cyprus. This is a confidence game. There is more money than goods which money can buy. If people are confidence enough to put the money in stocks, land, treasury, cash, etc. , It is OK. If confidence is lost, people will run out to buy everything and will go to the bank to take out money. I will take money out because I think bank will fail or money worth much less in the near future. If bank says no, bank fails. This is not only assumption, it happened in EU (Cyprus) and many Latin american countries. Most of them have modern banking, say Argentina.
I think enough said, lets stay our own way. I am sure protecting yourself is a prudent way.

Just thinking about it, the share price of miners seem to move with the American dollar, should the price of gold go above its all time high in Canadian, when would Canadian listed stocks decouple from the American dollar?
Especially on the Canadian market, what happens if gold were 2000 Canadian and 1000 American, when would share prices follow Canadian dollars?

The other says “This is absurd! Walking is impossible. And eat with our mouths? Ridiculous. The umbilical cord supplies nutrition. Life after delivery is to be excluded. The umbilical cord is too short.” “I think there is something and maybe it’s different than it is here.”
the other replies, “No one has ever come back from there. Delivery is the end of life, and in the after-delivery it is nothing but darkness and anxiety and it takes us nowhere.”
“Well, I don’t know,” says the other, “but certainly we will see mother and she will take care of us.”
“Mother??” You believe in mother? Where is she now? “She is all around us. It is in her that we live. Without her there would not be this world.” “I don’t see her, so it’s only logical that she doesn’t exist.”
To which the other replied, “sometimes when you’re in silence you can hear her, you can perceive her.” I believe there is a reality after delivery and we are here to prepare ourselves for that reality.

In Spain we have an emerging political party as Syriza en Greece that could win elections in November 2015. I guess al this political inestability in Europe and ECB QE will push precious metal much higher
