The Yen and Gold are buddies and will travel higher together.

        Jan 05, 2016 05:27 AM

They do diverge from time to time, as Gold is really the “uncorrelated” asset, but compared to most assets the Yen and Gold have had a generally positive correlation the last 4 years.

I’m still of the belief the many trading algorithms are based on the Yen:Gold relationship, just like the Loonie:Oil pair seem to be correlated with trading algos.

Below you’ll see that the Swiss Franc did track from one of the largest publicly traded manufacturers of Swiss cheese Saputo Inc. Since 2014 they have a cheesy divergence and inverse correlation, so we’ll have to keep searching for a Franc:XXXX correlation.

You know….the more I think about it…..Switzerland has a real economy (meats, cheeses, chocolates, watches, and a hub of banking). It is also curious that they remain neutral in wars and their currency is quite prized.

Frank……speaking frankly about the Franc, you brought up Louis Vuitton which is technically French (like the Grey Goose Vodka you drink is French you silly Russian that doesn’t drink Russian Vodka for some reason) 🙂

The French may very well have a lot to do with Switzerland….but only a small band of warrior monks that started some of the first banks……

As for it’s financial stability and banking focus……..Could it be that Switzerland really was founded by the banking money and treasure horde of the Knights templar fleeing France into Scottland to Rosslyn Chapel, and then fleeing again taking their banking and symbolism with them to form modern day Switzerland?

            1. The founding of the embryonic Switzerland conforms exactly to the period when the Templars were being persecuted in France.

            2. Switzerland is just to the east of France and would have been particularly easy for fleeing Templar brothers from the whole region of France to get to.

            3. In the history of the first Swiss Cantons there are tales of white coated knights mysteriously appearing and helping the locals to gain their independence against foreign domination.

            4. The Templars were big in banking, farming and engineering (of an early type). These same aspects can be seen as inimical to the commencement and gradual evolution of the separate states that would eventually be Switzerland.

            5. Even the Swiss don’t really know the ins and outs of their earliest history (or suggest that they don’t.) They are famous for being secretive and we don’t have to tell interested readers that this is something they share absolutely with the Templars.

            6. The famous Templar Cross is incorporated into the flags of many of the Swiss Cantons. As are other emblems, such as keys and lambs, that were particularly important to the Knights Templar.

            7. The Swiss were and are famous for their religious tolerance – and so were the Templars.

            http://blog.templarhistory.com/2010/03/did-the-templars-form-switzerland/

            Jan 05, 2016 05:55 PM

A significant number of Templars also found refuge in Scotland, the only monarchy in 14th century Europe that didn’t recognize the authority of the Catholic Church. Reorganizing under the protection of King Robert the Bruce, they soon found the perfect camouflage to hide their existence in the British Isles.

Some Templars escaped to Spain and entered orders like the Caltrava, Alcantra, and Santiago de la Espada, while others moved on to Portugal and they renamed themselves the Order of Christ. Still others fled to the Holy Roman Empire of the German nation and joined the Teuton knights, while another large group of Templars is known to have joined the Hospitalers. In England, the Templars were arrested and interrogated, but quickly released again. In still other countries, the Templars remained unmolested.

The Templars seemed to have disappeared from the history until 1804; when Bernard-Raymond Fabré Palaprat became Grand Master. Truly interesting is an accidental discovery he made in 1814… In one of the bookstalls along the river Seine in Paris, he came upon a handwritten Bible of the Yuhanna translation in the Greek language. The Bible’s last two chapters were missing; and in their place were notes divided by – and containing – numerous triangles.

Examining these notes a bit closer, he realized that this was a document listing the Grand Masters of the Templars, beginning with the fifth Grand Master, Bertrand de Blanchefort ( 1154), through the 22nd, Jacques de Molay, the 23rd Larmenius of Jerusalem (1314) and then on to Grand Master Claudio Mateo Radix de Chevillon (1792). This document suggested that Jacques de Molay passed the title of Grand Master on to Larmenius of Jerusalem

After Beaujeu, the order has never ceased to exist, not for a moment, and after Aumont we find an uninterrupted sequence of Grand Masters of the Order down to our own time, and if the name and seat of the true Grand Master and the true Seneschals who rule the Order and guide its sublime labors remain a mystery today, an impenetrable secret known only to the truly enlightened, it is because the hour of the Order has not struck and the time is not ripe.

It’s widely accepted that the Masons played a major role in the downfall of the French monarchy and the ensuing Revolution. When Louis XVI was guillotined in a public square in Paris, one of the onlookers shouted,

“Jacques de Molay, you have been avenged!”

If gold drops right here ( which I’m expecting ) and the stock exchange continues to plunge ( which I’m expecting ) JDST might be a real good play right here.

    Thoughts?

      Jan 06, 2016 06:27 AM

What do you mean by a good play here?

    Jan 06, 2016 06:45 AM

    JDST looks like a buy.

    Jan 06, 2016 06:20 AM

Stocks gapped down twice this week while the gold miners gapped up. Where are the guys who were sure the miners would fall if stocks fell?

Chartster, Right now, I’m more interested in buying weakness in the miners than selling strength.
Based on high closes (black circles on the following chart), GDX has broken out of it 2.5 month downtrend: http://schrts.co/nqdmVG

    Jan 06, 2016 06:07 AM
    Jan 06, 2016 06:40 AM

    Thanks for the thoughts, Matthew.
The JDST chart is hitting the bottom BB. The GDX chart is hitting the top BB. But what gets me is the weekly spot gold chart. It looks like gold is going down this week and next.

I only put credence in mining stocks falling with the general markets under crash conditions. And the stock exchange is in crash conditions. IMO
I guess we just see what transpires.

      Jan 06, 2016 06:09 AM

First, I agree with you about crash conditions. The odds that the miners go with stocks goes way up in a crash.
As for the BB, remember that price can grind higher for a long time after the top BB is reached.
My point is not that the miners won’t fall but that the risk/reward isn’t good enough right now for me.
      http://schrts.co/E5n43R

        Jan 06, 2016 06:14 AM

This picture in SLV:GLD is supportive of the miners going higher though admittedly not necessarily right away: http://schrts.co/0oTsoq
