What would a market crash look like?

April 25, 2016

Doc is with us today with a focus on what a crash in the markets would look like and what the US Presidential candidates will do for the markets? The term crash can mean very different things to investors and with so many of the bears saying we will see a crash it is important to define what type of a crash it could be.

    Doc:
Well put on your idea of ‘collapse’. Definitions, Definitions, so many analysts use words haphazardly for emphasis to their point but fail themselves to understand definitions are so…………..important. Your thoughts on collapse are more realistic than most. Good luck with your volatility bet!

Well Said, DOC. My only caveat though is, I think we are ” in collapse”, just nobody knows exactly where, since we have been in VooDoonomics since Aug 15, 1971.
A certain Cliff High, web bot aficionado, looks to have parity in Au/Ag before an undesignated too long. Just a black swan or 2 away from much near anything.

We may or may not have a collapse, but unless the various central banks change their pumping modus operandi I believe the increased money supply, after blowing bubbles, is going to cause a very significant inflation problem.
    (I’m thinking 2018)

    Doc,
Your technical analysis is always good, but you ain’t too shabby with politics and economics either. Good comments.

What do you think the odds are of getting a decent pullback in pms before the decision Wednesday?

      Apr 25, 2016 25:22 PM

If gold and silver start tanking before Wed’s meeting I would assume that someone knows that a rate increase is happening.

        Hello Bob,
        Hope all’s well.
G&S might start tanking before the decision is made public AND yet the decision might not result in a rate increase.
However, if the language is suggestive that a rate increase might be coming in June w. a good amount of certainty… that MIGHT put a lid on the PMs.
        My 2cts.

There is no way in h that they will raise rates!!!!

          Apr 25, 2016 25:13 PM

I would agree if fundamentals were considered!

I think it really matters who the next President will be especially if there is a crash. Trump is the only candidate that understands how to run a business and handle a bankruptcy having done so in his past. The other candidates are either boy scouts ( Cruz, Kasich, Saunders) or in the other case a girl guide.( Hillary Clinton).

    Apr 25, 2016 25:23 PM

Dick Tracy, in the other case, a black-widow spider.

Marty, it takes one to know one and I know you for one! LOL! DT

Hi Doc, if you inherited 1500 shares of MRK@51 would you keep it or sell it for 56 and change? Then if the miners correct you’d have lots of ready cash.
    Thanks, Bonzo

If Trump wins GOP nomination, the choice will be between a New York liberal who says male equals female and a New York liberal who says female equals male. This message was brought to you by New York liberal banksters.

      That’s great, Wayne!

    Apr 25, 2016 25:43 PM

Dt thanks for your wisdom Im regards to realstate in Toronto and bubble phase..

Bird, no I’m not thinking of buying this late in the game, just showing some frustration and trying to make sure there are others who see the same as me. Sometimes for myself when I ask a question and it’s the obvious, I personally like to get some assurance or confirmation that bright minds like the ones in here share same thoughts.

Again bird it’s more of a matter of distraction for the extended duration of higher and higher property prices. It’s the timing no one ever gets correct. You say 2016/2017 top and reversal. I spoke to a friend who has done well in this space, big player and he said 2020. I maybe only 38 but but another 7 years before bottom? Geese I will never enjoy my house.

Regardless I’m in for the wait.

      Apr 25, 2016 25:50 PM

2020?…..Jeepers man, that guy is an optimist. Anything is possible I suppose but where are the first time buyers going to come from unless wages start to catch up with those insane home prices?

Anyway, even if your friend is correct think of it this way…when you take out a mortgage its for 20 or 25 years. During the first half dozen of those years you are only paying interest and it is not until the later years the principle starts to decline meaningfully.

So you would be making a large long bet on a short period of time and the odds still don’t favour upside if a bust comes anytime between now and 2020 unless you flip and get out before the curtain comes down.

Most people never get out in time. That is a fact.

      Apr 25, 2016 25:16 PM

Your time frame makes good sense, Glen!

    Apr 25, 2016 25:46 PM

    Excuse me!

    Frustration replaces distraction lol

    Apr 25, 2016 25:47 PM

    I meant geeze

      Apr 25, 2016 25:32 PM

Glen, if you have a lot of geese around your house, I can guarantee you that you will never enjoy your house let alone your lawn.

        Apr 25, 2016 25:45 PM

They do a fantastic job mowing the lawn though. Almost better than sheep.

          Apr 25, 2016 25:58 PM

yuch, when I play golf on a course that has geese the greens are always messed up by droppings (hard to put) & leave your golf shoes a caked up mess! never go back to that course! I don’t know about geese cutting the grass?

            Apr 25, 2016 25:54 PM

Yeah, I was thinking of domestic Geese, not Canada Geese. You are right, they make a mess.

        Apr 25, 2016 25:18 PM

Our green super agred with you, Doc!

    Apr 25, 2016 25:37 PM

I would like to hear Doc, Rick, Al, Cory or others comment on the interview with Andrew McGuire about the opening of the SGE – (http://kingworldnews.com/andrew-maguire-4-23-16/). Re: paper gold versus physical price discovery.

In, ( http://www.bbc.com/capital/story/20160419-the-city-with-248-billion-beneath-its-pavement ), the BBC claim there are over 6000 tonnes of gold in the vaults around London mostly under the Bank of England worth $US248 Billion. The timing of this revelation seems curious.
