Hanjin and South Korea’s other big shipping line, Hyundai Merchant Marine Co. Ltd., have been struggling under heavy debt loads in a troubled global shipping market awash in excess capacity and plummeting prices.

Even worse, all those ships are full of iPhone 7s and Samsung Note 7s 🙂

    OFF TOPIC: “Green” Energy companies

I know you have posted lots of info on the energy sector, but I have a small favor to ask:

I’ll do the research, but I was wondering if you had 3-5 favorite companies, located in Canada/US, that focus on solar, wind, and/or geothermal.

I’m diversifying a bit. I already have US Geothermal (HTM) on my watch list (waiting for an entry point)

    Thanks, Brian

      Sep 02, 2016 02:35 AM

Alterra Power, of course. Your discussion yesterday is what got me started on this new investment focus

        Sep 02, 2016 02:58 PM

        Hi Brian –

        1) Yes Alterra Power (MGMXF) is my pick of the litter and I am a shareholder, but I’m concerned the stock may sell off after the reverse split (as sometimes happens); but I’m encouraged that they announced the dividend at the same time, so maybe that will keep things together nicely even post consolidation.

        2) Brookfield Renewable Partners LP (BEP) -Brookfield Renewable Partners L.P., formerly Brookfield Renewable Energy Partners L.P., owns and operates a portfolio of renewable power generating facilities in North America, Brazil, Colombia and Europe. The Company operates over three biomass facilities and Co-generation (Co-gen) facilities. The Company operates through three segments: Hydroelectric, Wind and Other, which includes Co-gen and Biomass. The Hydroelectric and Wind segments are segmented by geography, such as North America, which comprises the United States and Canada segments, Brazil, Colombia, and Europe. The hydroelectric portfolio generates approximately 6,530 Gigawatt hours (GWh) and the wind portfolio generates approximately 1,100 GWh. Its portfolio consists of hydroelectric and wind facilities in North America, Latin America and Europe and totals over 10,000 megawatts of installed capacity. Its projects include Upper Dam Construction, Coldwell Wind Energy Project and Victor Wind Project.

        3) TerraForm Power Inc (TERP) – TerraForm Power, Inc. is a diversified owner of clean power generation assets in developed markets. This includes solar and wind assets located in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Chile. The Company’s 2,967 megawatts renewable energy portfolio enables power production around the clock.

(If you get a wild hair and want to go GLOBAL then they also have this)

        4) TerraForm Global, Inc. (GLBL) is a holding company. The Company owns interest in TerraForm Global, LLC, a diversified renewable energy company that owns long-term contracted wind, solar and hydro-electric power plants. The Company’s portfolio of projects include Hercules (China), NSM 24 (India), NSM Suryalabh (India), NSM Sitara (India), NSM L’Volta (India), Brakes (India), Raj 5 (India), Focal (India), Bhakrani (India), Gadag (India), Hanumanhatti (India), Boshoff (South Africa), Klipheuwel (South Africa), Koonkoonsies (South Africa), Witkop (South Africa), Soutpan (South Africa), Silverstar Pavilion (Malaysia), Fortune 11 (Malaysia), PP Solar (Thailand), ESPRA (Brazil), El Naranjal (Uruguay), Del Litoral (Uruguay), Alto Cielo (Uruguay) and LAP Portfolio (Peru). In addition, the Company operates Salvador and Bahia wind energy projects that are located in Brazil. The Company serves a range of utility, commercial, industrial and government customers.

        5) TransAlta Renewables Inc (TRSWF) – TransAlta Renewables Inc. is a Canada-based company engaged in developing, owning and operating renewable power generation facilities. The Company owns and operates over 10 hydro facilities and approximately 20 wind farms in Western and Eastern Canada with a total installed capacity of approximately 1,140 megawatts (MW) and holds economic interest in approximately 140 MW Wyoming Wind Farm and approximately 420 MW Australian gas-fired generation assets, as well as over 270 kilometers gas pipeline. The Company also owns economic interests in Sarnia cogeneration plant, Le Nordais wind farm and Ragged Chute hydro facility totaling approximately 610 MW of contracted power generation assets located in Ontario and Quebec. The Company’s subsidiaries include Canadian Hydro Developers, Inc. and Western Sustainable Power Inc.

Here are a few ETFs & Funds that give general exposure (I’m typically more of stock picker to time trades, but if you just want to buy and hold these may be of interest)

        6) VanEck Vectors Global Alternative Energy ETF (GEX) – The investment seeks to replicate as closely as possible, before fees and expenses, the price and yield performance of the Ardour Global IndexSM (Extra Liquid). The fund normally invests at least 80% of its total assets in stocks of companies primarily engaged in the business of alternative energy. Such companies may include small- and medium-capitalization companies and foreign issuers. Alternative energy refers to the generation of power through environmentally friendly, non-traditional sources.

        7) Guggenheim Solar ETF (TAN) – Solar ETF {my only complaint is that it has performed poorly due to the basket of stocks in it’s allocation, but you can comb through the individual holdings to look for ideas}

        8) First Trust ISE Global Wind Energy Index Fund (FAN) – Wind ETF {This Wind power ETF has done much better than it’s Solar sibling, and if an investor just wants some wind exposure it is a good way to play it. Again you can dig into their holdings for more ideas}

        9) Ormat Technologies Inc (ORA) – Ormat Technologies, Inc. is engaged in the geothermal and recovered energy power business. The Company designs, develops, builds, owns and operates geothermal and recovered energy-based power plants. The Company’s equipment manufacturing operations are located in Israel. The Company conducts its business activities in two business segments: Electricity segment and Product segment. The Company’s Electricity segment develops, builds, owns and operates geothermal and recovered energy-based power plants in the United States and geothermal power plants in other countries around the world, and sells the electricity it generates. The Company’s Product Segment designs, manufactures and sells equipment for geothermal and recovered energy-based electricity generation, remote power units and other power generating units, and provide services relating to the engineering, procurement, construction, operation and maintenance of geothermal, and recovered energy-based power plants.

        10) Boralex Inc (BRLXF) – Boralex Inc. is a power producer that develops, constructs and operates renewable energy power stations. The Company’s segments include wind, hydroelectric, thermal and solar. It operates an asset base with a capacity of approximately 1,260 megawatts (MW), of which over 1,090 MW are under its control, consisting of approximately 490 MW in Canada, over 520 MW in France and over 80 MW in the Northeastern United States. It operates approximately 870 MW wind power portfolio of assets in France and Canada. It also owns the rights to portfolio of wind power projects in France. It is also a wind power operator in Canada with an installed capacity of approximately 550 MW in Quebec and Ontario. It owns over two thermal power stations with a total installed capacity of approximately 50 MW, consisting of over 30 MW wood-residue power station in Quebec and approximately 10 MW natural gas cogeneration power station in France. It operates over three solar power facilities in France and in Canada.

          Sep 02, 2016 02:08 PM

Pattern Energy Group Inc (PEGI) – attern Energy Group Inc. (Pattern Energy) is an independent power company focused on owning and operating power projects. The Company holds interests in over 16 wind power projects located in the United States, Canada and Chile with total capacity of over 2,280 megawatts (MW). Sep 02, 2016 02:59 AM

This is September and a dangerous time for the markets. So they had to come up with a jobs report that was not too hot and not too cold. The market needed to be supported as it was no the verge of a breakdown. They want to raise rates but this is not a good month to do it and the markets need to break higher first.

    Sep 02, 2016 02:09 AM

WATT has been on incredible growth this year. Not really an energy generating technology, but a new disruptive technology that allows wireless re-charging of devices. There are about 5 or 6 companies really effectively working in the area. Apple will probably buy up one or two of them.

Thanks for the discussion guys…..however, I wish you had let Chris discuss more about Hanjin instead of trying to force a discussion about unemployment definitions, etc….missed opportunity 🙂

Anyway, FWIW Craig Hemke just published a long interview with Jim Willie on his site TFMetalsReport.com

I take Jim’s conclusions with a grain of salt (usually a very large grain), but IMO he does have some excellent information not heard elsewhere and does provide insights about hot the dots may potentially connect.

In this interview he also discussed trade settlement and how unstable the system is (as Chris briefly mentioned….that people have no idea how unstable all of this is).

He gave an example of a client of his who sat in on a meeting with Bobcat execs (owned by a South Korean conglomerate I believe). The Bobcat execs said they are no longer accepting US treasury paper as payment for trades. Willie also said friendly mid-east countries are demanding PM payment from the US for fuel when our ships dock.

Just a couple more points potentially pointing to a nasty swan related to international trade that may somehow (I don’t pretend to understand it all) contribute to whatever reset is coming.

It is a good sign for the gold sector that the metals, especially silver, gave back none of their gains even though the dollar rebounded sharply from the morning low and went to a new high for the day.

Lost money on my volatility trade, so I sold my position. Will come back on it in a few days, though my thesis was basically correct, Fed waffling on interest rates and underwhelming jobs numbers were a springboard to higher markets.

Sold HVU.TO, but continuing analysis. I still believe a good hedging opportunity exists in volatility ETFs.

The daily HVU.TO chart is showing lots of volume, while the Fibonacci retracement was taken from the peak after the fourth and final reverse split. There are only 875,000 units in the float and the turnover exceeds the float by a multiple.

A log scale chart is necessary to make some sense of valuations:

Am happy with the vast majority of my Silver stocks,
But I have a one listed on the ASX that has copped a bit of a kick in the guts recently (Azure, ASX.AZS).
Still up (just) from my initial purchase, but it is the standout laggard of my silver portfolio.
It needs to lift the anchor.
      Cheers.

I thought Azure was a copper/gold company right? I have it on my Base Metals watch list. Is it a Silver company?

          Sep 02, 2016 02:24 PM

Wow, I see what happened. They used to be focused on Copper Gold…. I think maybe that is still their “perception” in the marketplace, and they may have struggled as copper prices sold off.

On the very front page of their website it says “Welcome to Azure Minerals”

“Azure Minerals Limited (ASX: AZS) is Australia’s leading mineral exploration company in Mexico. Azure is progressing two advanced-stage copper projects in partnership with two of the world’s major mining companies – the Alacrán Copper Project with Teck Resources and the Promontorio Copper Project with the Rio Tinto Group. The Company continues to seek opportunities to acquire other assets which the Company believes will add value for its shareholders.

Here was a recent press release for example
“Loma Bonita Gold Zone Continues to Grow”
          25 August 2016

          —————————————————————————————————————–

However, when I pull up their Corporate Presentation they are branding themselves in a totally different way – all about the Silver…..

Thanks Skeeta! I’m adding to my Silver list now, and maybe they will get re-rated once the marketplace wakes up to their Silver production pathway. Much appreciated.

BTW the OTC ticker for Azure Minerals is (AZRMF) for anyone interested.

It would appear they are really a polymetallic company which is fine by me. I like Silver, Gold, and Copper. Bring it!

I probably have too many Silver positions going at once, but a relatively new position for me is in Silver Bear Resources (SVBRF) (SBR.TO). Since I know you don’t mind a little jurisdiction risk this Silver development company is in Russia……

Their business strategy and progress so far is impressive, they have a clear path forward to production on a well defined advanced asset, and I believe this one is waaayyy under the radar still. Not without some risk of course, but check out page 6 of their presentation for their timeline:

Wow – Check out Slide # 21 on the presentation above. There is a fascinating comparison of the Senior Silver Producers and the Junior Silver producers.

Worth a quick look and that may be worth saving (of course the info is from July so it is already dated, but it is a great comparison of different metrics).

            Thank you.
            Cheers.
