Welcome!

The market of note moving into 2017- US Dollar

Cory
December 19, 2016

In today’s market wrap we focus on the USD and the possibility of a sustainably higher dollar. When the dollar makes a move like we saw in 2014 and the tail end of this year it has global consequences. Will the Fed step in a try to talk the dollar down and will it actually work?

    I’ve said it before…..

It is not dollar strength, it is Euro weakness.

The Fed cannot talk the dollar down, because the EU will collapse.

Armstrong – Christine Lagarde found Guilty at Trial

IMF chief Christine Lagarde found guilty of ‘negligence’ over huge payout to business tycoon, but of course there is no jail time. Because of her position, the court chose not to punish her or give her a criminal record. She had faced a one-year term and a €15,000 (£13,000) fine. Many assume this is why she wanted to remain as the head of the IMF to prevent jail time.

However, the questionable way the court dealt with her appears far too political and this may yet derail her from becoming the first woman ever to become finance chief of a Group of Eight (G8). An IMF spokesman said they would meet soon to consider the outcome, but the IMF previously said they stood by her that she did no wrongdoing and even this looks to be more like another political-white-wash. To rise in power to this extent means you are also exempt from the law and any accountability. Anyone else would have received one year in prison and a criminal record.

Does anyone have any thoughts on the big down day in GDXJ with a positive day in JNUG? Bullish divergence?

      Dec 19, 2016 19:22 PM

That is definitely a divergence of the bullish kind.

      Dec 19, 2016 19:36 PM

I don’t know what happened but that divergence disappeared this evening.

Yes, some sort of error in the data feed for the past several days at stockcharts…

      Stockcharts reply:

Thank you for contacting us. We adjust our historical price data to remove the effects of fund distributions, dividends and stock splits from our charts. Splits, distributions and dividends are “artificial” changes in the price of a ticker symbol that create gaps on technical charts causing misleading signals from technical indicators. To eliminate those gaps, we decrease our historical prices (and increase our historical volume data) in a way that removes these misleading signals.

We post notices for all of our data adjustments on this page:
      http://stockcharts.com/freecharts/adjusthist.html

For more information about our data adjustment policy, please see this article:
      http://stockcharts.com/docs/doku.php?id=policies:adjusted_data

I see that GDXJ had a data adjustment on December 19, 2016 which is probably what caused the differences you noticed.

If you would like to see charts of unadjusted data, you can add an underscore character to the front of the stock’s normal symbol. For example, you can use “_IBM” to see unadjusted data for IBM.

I compared the two charts, gdxj and _gdxj, and everything before yesterday has been changed.

This must explain why GORO’s chart is so different than it was years ago. I sold a lot of shares at prices much higher than the highest prices shown today. The all time high has been adjusted to $5 below the high that I remember (26.43 vs 31.38).

Now that Trump has won the required electoral college votes, Northern Dynasty which has been moving up fairly aggressively and is getting recommended by many analysts, should continue to reward investors. DT

Jim Sinclair with his latest, typically cryptic and poorly written, but likely very well-informed opinion. Seems to boil down to arbitrage.

“cryptic and poorly written”………..it takes awhile to figure out what he is saying, but, generally he makes some great points.

Ugly morning in the metals. I’m adding to positions in Silver miners and Gold Development companies today while things continue to slide with some of my dry powder. When I find myself shaking my head at the valuations in the miners (some of which have now pulled back 50% – 80% of their moves into the summer), then I know it’s time to keep throw a few more logs on the fire.

The last 3 years I started buying around the holidays and kept buying into February. There is no guarantee we’ll see a pop in Gold & Silver in the first quarter of 2017, but it has been a fairly good seasonality trade the last few years. If nothing else, the Silver miners and Jr Gold companies are clearly not “overbought” at these levels. 🙂
