O/T Doctor Dragged From United Plane After Computer “Solves” Overbooking Problem

A man was violently dragged off of a United Airlines flight Sunday evening after it was apparently overbooked, according to passengers who were on the plane

the airline has a stupid policy.
Clearly being too cheap to offer a good enough bounty to get enough “volunteers”.

I bet the computer also “chose” who to kick off on who paid the least for their ticket.

SEC Targets Seeking Alpha, Benzinga In Crack Down On “Fake News” Pump And Dumps

The SEC on Monday announced a crackdown against “pump and dump” stock promotion schemes in which writers were secretly paid to post bullish articles about public company sponsors without disclosing their conflicts of interest, on financial websites such as Seeking Alpha and Benzinga.

I agree that seekingalpha does have some pumpers. Perhaps not as bad as stockhouse.

        Apr 10, 2017 10:04 PM

Seeking Alpha is much better than Stockhouse (which is a toilet), and while there are certain authors that are getting paid to promote their stocks on Seeking Alpha, there are many good authors & contributors on their site that put out regular good content. In most cases the author discloses any interest in the stocks they discuss at the bottom of the article, so it sounds like there are a few bad eggs not making proper disclosures.

Ultimately, it is still up to all investors to take personal responsibility for doing their own due diligence, and have Personal Accountability for any actions that they take. Nobody makes investors hit the buy/sell button but the person in the mirror.

There is far too much blaming of other market pundits, gurus, experts, and newsletter writers, and not enough investors that are taking responsibility for their own actions.

          Apr 10, 2017 10:08 PM

I would agree with the crackdown on “fake news” on these various investment sites though. There are times where an author has an axe to grind against a particular company or management team and if their posts are completely fallacious, then they should have to delete them, or preferably correct any passages that are in error.

Shanghai gold and silver dropped slightly, which is a problem.
I would like to see gold up to $1270.

Doc, got to ask – what your thoughts on NAT now please?

      Apr 10, 2017 10:18 PM

Bob; I like the action. Here is what I’ll probably do in the next couple of days—after the nice spike today. If we get a pull back tomorrow, I’ll probably purchase. The reason is the market is anticipating the soon to be announced dividend for the recent quarter— the announcement should be toward the end of April. I bet the stock doesn’t take out its’ lows until then. Then if the announcement is not impressive and the stock looks weak before ex-dividend, I’ll move out. However, if the stock holds nicely I’ll ride it to ex-dividend and then make a decision after based on technicals whether to stay in the stock—not investment advice.

        Apr 10, 2017 10:47 PM

Thanks Doc. I was thinking of purchasing on a pull-back but did not think about the dividend angle. So thank you for the information.

        Apr 10, 2017 10:37 PM

I had a problem with one of the writers about 8 or 9 yrs ago…..

          Apr 10, 2017 10:48 PM

See the discussion above. Seeking Alpha has many good contributors, but a few bad eggs can ruin the bunch. I get about 7-10 articles in my inbox each day and try to weed out the jaded writers with an axe to grind.

Most writers on Seeking Alpha disclose any interest in companies covered at the bottom, and often do a great job of reviewing the pros and cons for each opportunity (without being a pump-n-dump scheme or without conflicts).

            Apr 10, 2017 10:17 PM

            Yes, I saw that after I posted………..
and I agree ….personal Accountability, your own DD,

            Apr 10, 2017 10:22 PM

Seeking Alpha can also be used as a good tool to get SEC reports and filings on selected companies, news releases, Quarterly or Year End conference call transcripts, corporate slide shows, etc… so it is a good tool for doing further DD on companies.

As for the editorials you have to take each one with a grain of salt….

            Apr 10, 2017 10:26 PM

Lastly, I often learn and glean more from the comments sections below an article; where different people agree or disagree with some of points from the piece. Often other investors point out interesting facts, company comparisons, or post helpful links.

            Apr 10, 2017 10:32 PM

            Hi Shad:
Yesterday you posted links to KTN. Kootenay Silver. Yesterday I was running technical scans and KTN came up as a good buy candidate. After watching the links you posted,it looks even better. I like the risk reward on KTN. The stock is also.015 from its 52 week low. Looking at the weekly chart you can see a nice divergence between the MACD Histogram and the Price.Notice the flattening of the MACD and the RSI.
            http://stockcharts.com/h-sc/ui?s=KTN.V&id=p88082806984&listNum=1

            Apr 10, 2017 10:05 PM

Yes, I’ve been interested in Kootenay for a long time, but only recently started building a position. I usually feature then when I do the Silver mining composite charts in with the Explorers, and cheered their takeover of Northhair Silver, and like to see so many larger Silver miners partnering with them. They didn’t get the same percentage boost that many of the other Silver stocks did in 2016 and earlier this year, and thus seem like a nice discounted value in comparison to many of their peers.

            Apr 10, 2017 10:09 PM

Kootenay Silver also seems well diversified over a few projects with a few partners, and border on being a prospect generator of mostly silver projects. I like the diversification and focus all in one….

Longer term, I see one of their JV partners deciding to either buy off certain properties (where maybe they’d keep an interest or royalty) or one of them may just to acquire the whole company. That is the type of exit strategy I like to see in companies that have key strategic investors and partners.

            Apr 10, 2017 10:20 PM

Absolutely, another thing to is that April is seasonally a good month for KTN.re Stockcharts seasonality.
I like the fact that the stock is less than a double from the 2016 lows also.
I like to use auto racing analogies with stock investing/trading. I call this one the Petty trade.7 time Nascar champion Richard Petty use to run the top of the racetrack because the impact of the inevitable crash was less than coming from the bottom and hitting the top wall. With the high levels of debt margin and animal spirits,I’ll stick to the top of the track when picking stocks right now. After a decent correction my strategy will again change.

Seeking alpha……….having some more problems today…..seems there are a lot more writers involved in the PUMP AND DUMP.

            Apr 11, 2017 11:11 AM

Seems there were 27 writers in the scheme……..for one company to have that many writers….is a Scam…………Seeking Alpha no more……..info at zerohedge.
            We will see……

            Apr 11, 2017 11:13 AM

Hard to do all the DD, when the majority are on the take…………jmho

            Apr 11, 2017 11:20 AM

There are hundreds and hundreds of writers on Seeking Alpha, so while 27 is a big number, it is pretty easy to discern which ones are legit (like Avi Gilburt, Don Durrett, Jordan Roy-Byrne, Palisade Radio, etc….)

Again, many writers just cover Volatility, or Technical Analysis, and Seeking Alpha usually has up the transcripts from Corporate Conference Calls on companies faster than the actual companies do.

There is good and bad content on every site (including this one The KER), so it’s up to the individual investor to have discernment. If investors, don’t do their own homework and come to the conclusion to buy or sell a stock on their own research then they have no business speculating and should turn their money management over to someone who can.

            Apr 11, 2017 11:26 AM

Think about the investors that may have popped on here on the KER about a year and a half ago and saw the garbage from Heavy Hitter, crazy Mark, Birdman, and James the Lessor. Would it really be fair to summarize the KER base on a few wackos?

You’ve referenced Zero Hedge as a source quite often (including for this article) but Zero Hedge has posted all kinds of Fake News, presented things as fact that are merely conjecture, and often the stories they break are seen in hindsight as incorrect, but they rarely come out and retract a story or correct it and admit their news was wrongo in the congo…..

I still find Seeking Alpha and the Majority of their commentators to offer good analysis, to raise interesting ideas, post interested technical analysis, and again, the most valuable content is typically the other contributors that post in the comment sections down under an article, because so many great ideas get crowd-sourced.

            Apr 11, 2017 11:45 AM

But Zerohedge is not pumping stocks…………

            Apr 11, 2017 11:46 AM

Some of the wackos…….that you mentioned were not promoting stocks……

            Apr 11, 2017 11:55 AM

Yes, but Zero Hedge has put out tons of Fake News that shapes public opinion over the years, and they often comment on a sector like Gold, Silver, Platinum, Uranium, Oil/Gas, etc…. When their info is wrong, or highly biased to a conspiracy theory, they rarely come back out and retract it or correct it afterwards, but the perceptions are already out circulating in the marketplace. That is, of course, true of most news outlets these days. It all comes down to people fact checking and doing their own research to verify, but so few do that.

As for the past wackos here on the KER, they took swipes at commodities, currencies, and mocked mining stocks with little to no grasp of the fundamentals or technicals of those stock, so I see little difference in the disinformation they spread.

The larger point was that it is not fair to summarize an entire informational site like Seeking Alpha based on the deeds of a few bad eggs.

Personally, I’ve read and followed different commentators on Seeking Alpha for years and get a great deal of value from it, and yesterday on a few blogs I saw investors incorrectly jumping to the conclusion that it was just a “pump-n-dump site.” That is a false narrative and a shame to blacklist a whole site for a ring of idiots.

Their writers are supposed to disclose if they are getting paid by a company to promote their stock, and if those writers didn’t, then they should feel some heat. My only point was not to discard the whole site or paint it in an incorrect light based on the actions of a few.

            Apr 11, 2017 11:26 AM

No problem ……., my only point was more of a warning…..and I agree, everyone needs to do their own DD. As for the guy on the KER site, most of them were discredited by their own actions.

            Apr 11, 2017 11:36 AM

            Thanks for all your efforts……..appreciate…………JTHELONG

            Apr 11, 2017 11:04 AM

Thanks OOTB. I appreciate your efforts as well sir.

Yes, most of the bad eggs do typically discredit themselves when given enough time, however, I feel it unfortunate when a legitimate site or business gets dragged into the muck because of the actions of a few rogue dirtballs.

We’ll stay ever vigilant and focus on the quality. Most of the contributions on sites like the KER, ceo.ca, Seeking Alpha, Palisade radio, etc… are quality and take the high road.

Today turned out to be yet another teaser day in the gold juniors. One thing I have found I can rely on with them, they will inflict the maximum discomfort possible.

But the intraday and daily charts still look bullish to me. Given the narrowing 20-day bollinger bands indicate an imminent move, I believe the odds point up.

GDX is a little more clearly bullish. Five days now above the 50 day moving avg, six days above the down trend line from the 2011 high, and today it took out the 38.2% fib level from the Aug 2016 – Dec 2016 correction, if just by a hair.

However, I’m personally holding my PM stocks and will add to them and will purchase some stocks I’ve been waiting to purchase. Apr 11, 2017 11:32 AM

I seriously doubt that 27 writers on Seeking Alpha have any effect on the price of Silver which is a globally traded commodity. Those writers are in the minority on Seeking Alpha, and if investors fell for their pump-n-dumps without any critical thinking, research, or due diligence, then that is on them for making a poor decision and letting others tell them how to invest.

            Apr 11, 2017 11:42 AM

            Poor policing on their part……….jmho

            Apr 11, 2017 11:46 AM

I agree that Seeking Alpha, needs to do a much better job vetting and checking on their writers. All of them are free-lance, and some are anonymous, so it’s a tall order, but they should have more filters & signed disclosures on the front end to be able to submit articles. If not, then that is on them & the writers of the articles.

          Apr 11, 2017 11:29 AM

            Apr 11, 2017 11:45 AM

If investors that got caught up in those bio-tech stocks were not smart enough to realize they were in a pump-n-dump, and continually blame others for their own bad investment decisions, then they can by a Mutual Fund or ETF. Those are actively managed by other “experts”.

I honestly feel that way about the Jr Miners as well, and don’t experience most investors that are willing to put in the work on the fundamental or technical side to be successful speculators. Usually they just go along with the ride, which is why so many investors flocked into Rubi-con, Northern Dynasty, crappy Rare Earths companies, Uranium stocks without a prayer, fly-by night Lithium & Graphite stocks that were merely jumping on the trend, tons of over-hyped Weed Stocks, and let’s not leave off the many complete garbage Gold & Silver stocks.

For most investors that just want exposure to the sector they would be FAR SAFER just plopping money into the ETFs or Funds that are managed and weighted by people that are doing their homework.

            > If people want exposure to Gold Srs buy GDX or SGDM, TGLDX and if they want Gold Jrs buy GDXJ, GOEX, or USERX.
            > If they want exposure to Silver Srs (with some Gold) buy SIL, and for Silver Jrs SILJ.
            > If they want a basket of Lithium stocks buy LIT
            > If they want a basket of Uranium stocks buy URA
            > If they want a basket of Agricultural stocks buy SOIL
            > If they want a basket of larger stocks buy XLE, for Oil Jrs by XOP, for Oil services OIH

It’s pretty simple and that is what I was getting at letting other manage their investing.

There are also many reputable brokers that will keep up with Emerging Markets, small cap stocks, Growth funds etc….. The truth is that very few regularly beat the indexes though, so that is the other option. Just buy the long or short index funds and ETFs.

I don’t own KDX but, for those who do, it looks like it can run at least 15% higher in the weeks straight ahead…

    SLV, NUGT, USLV today bebe!

Hey SHAD! Got any good pump and dumps for me? My VTMB and AEGY are not doing it for me.

    Thanks

      Apr 11, 2017 11:06 AM

I don’t do pump-n-dumps machine gun Jason, just speculative moves in mining stocks I think represent good value.

Currently I hold about 55 resource & energy stocks and follow a few different sectors. What sector are you looking for, do you want a producer, developer, or explorer, what is you time horizon (hours, days, weeks, months, years), and do you have any other criteria (management teams, jurisdiction, etc…)?

        Apr 11, 2017 11:10 AM

You seem to like the EFTs so if you’re having success there, those seem like a good place to keep playing ball. You could always get into options with the ETFs if you want more bang for your buck, but I’m not smart enough to play the options game.

PPP is at the 55 week Fibonacci time zone — a great place for a turn:
