What is wrong with the Canadian system?
What is wrong with UK NHS?

    Quality and speed.
Why, on earth, do British and Canadians travel out of country AND PAY for superior healthcare when they need it?
Because a single-payer system CANNOT afford the best healthcare for everyone, so it settles for a “cost effective” one.

What is curiously (and disgustingly) absent from the dialogue, even among those on the so-called right, is the issue of FORCE. You can’t get more un-american than forcing such participation. But that’s democracy for you and H.L. Mencken nailed it:

“Democracy is a pathetic belief in the collective wisdom of individual ignorance.”

Excellent discussion Al. I’d very much like to hear another discussion with this gentleman on the expansion of medicare advantage. My wife and I are part of that system for 10 years now and have been extremely happy with the costs and benefits of our plan which is sponsored by Blue Cross. I should say that we’re possibly somewhat different in that so far, we have no chronic health issues and require no drugs other than I take a daily statin. We walk daily, drink moderately and eat wisely; as much from our garden as it can produce. Given that, I think it could be answer to the monstrosity in health care that we presently have.
Remember Churchill’s statement that Americans can be counted on to do the right thing, but only after they have exhausted every other possibility!
