This was another interesting week for markets and news on the political front. We saw some increased volatility and the largest down move in the US equity markets on Thursday in 5 months (since March 21st). There are some more technical reasons now to doubt the markets but investors still seem to be distracted by political stories in the US.

In this weekend’s show we address how the media is controlling the narrative and distracting the masses with stories that have little long term impact on financial conditions. With the Jackson Hole meeting around the corner as well as a Fed and ECB meeting we should get some more clarification very soon about the overall financial system.

If you have any companies or guests you would like to see on the show please email me at anytime and I will do my best to make that happen. I can be reached at Fleck[at]kereport.com.

Also be sure to check out the company specific interviews throughout the week by clicking on the links below.

Next weekend a white supremacist group is planning a rally in Berkeley, CA one of the most liberal and diverse cities in the country. I will be sure not to be in Berkeley that day. I don’t know what they hope to accomplish in Berkeley, but unless the police keep the protesters and counter-protesters far apart, I don’t know how this will NOT end in a riot. If they march into Berkeley carrying torches and chanting, “Jews will not replace us” this will not end well.

The media has so distorted historical facts….

e.g. In Truth: the KKK was founded by Democrats.
Also remember Senator Byrd, a major KKK member
Most of the Segregation laws were instituted by Democrats.
(It was Republicans that supported and caused the anti-Segregation laws.)
Is not it funny that the left is now calling for removal of Southern-related flags and statues, which were from people on the LEFT, not Right.
Lincoln was Republican; the confederates were mostly Democrats in favor of slavery.

Finally, a fact, most people do not realize…..

Did you know there are more real slaves in the world TODAY, than in the US in 1850?

There are real slaves today in many Islamic controlled countries. E.g. Libya. Nigeria
Estimated numbers actually exceed those in slavery in the US in 1850.

What is Antifa or BlackLivesMatter doing about that?
We know BlackLivesMatter does not really care about Black Lives or they would be doing something about the killings on the streets of Chicago and other inner cities, where black-on-black crime guns down hundreds every week

Recently departed White House strategist Steve Bannon is preparing a war for Donald Trump, not against him.

“If there’s any confusion out there, let me clear it up: I’m leaving the White House and going to war for Trump against his opponents — on Capitol Hill, in the media, and in corporate America,” Bannon told Bloomberg Businessweek’s Joshua Green.

Green said that Bannon “sounded like he’d just consumed 40 Red Bulls” during his conversation with him on the phone.

Bannon did not specifically mention the White House “Democrats” advising Trump in his conversation with Green, widely considered to be his enemies during his period of service.

In an interview with the American Prospect published on Wednesday, Bannon said his enemies were “wetting themselves” about his agenda. He specifically criticized White House economic adviser Gary Cohn and “Goldman Sachs lobbying” in the White House.

The Trump administration formally launched an investigation into trade practices that China allegedly uses to steal the intellectual property of U.S. companies.

The administration said today that it was launching a “Section 301” investigation. The probe could result in the U.S. imposing trade tariffs on China within months, according to a person familiar with the matter.

The administration signaled that it was going to begin a probe into the impact of China’s trade rules on U.S. intellectual property on Monday when President Donald Trump signed an order authorizing U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer to consider beginning a Section 302 investigation.

“I notified the President today that I am beginning an investigation under Section 201 of the Trade Act of 1974,” Lighthizer said in a statement.

Why did the police stand down?

That is the question that several have made regarding Charlottesville. Here’s Jimmy Dore, a progressive who asks (he also thinks that Antifa was beaten upon by the “white supremacists”): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z5gcbT-lxWg

Millie Weaver from Infowars has the same question (although she says that Antifa was the ones who were beating up on the folks): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xnHPKRjGOVs

Hmmm, same question from both sides of the controversy.

Do you think that the intent was simply to create the event for political purposes? (Especially since, apparently, the “alt-right” was ordered by the police to vacate and the only path open to them was through the “alt-left”).

If so, are we all being played?

While I’m agnostic to skeptic on climate change, I see little reason to doubt that we are, indeed, in a major extinction phase.

Look at deforestation in Madagascar, the Philippines, Borneo, Sumatra, etc. High levels of endemic species combined with habitat destruction = extinctions. Even the Amazon forest is significantly fragmented.

Or look at the declining quality of key habitat like coral reefs and wetlands. Both habitats that have been extensively damaged and destroyed. Look at the world’s fisheries today compared to a century ago.

What’s really funny is how so many people have no ability to recognize bs when it hits them in the face. Sane people know there’s a problem when the whole scam is kicked-off with the fear-mongering of a politician who’s in cahoots with Goldman Sachs to shakedown the public. Sane people don’t ignore the blatant hypocrisy of the scam’s leaders and paid promoters. Sane people know what evidence of fraud looks like and knows there’s plenty of it.
The government’s calls to jail “deniers” should set off alarm bells in anyone with an IQ over 85 since only lies need such protection. Scientific and truth are clearly in the crosshairs when the government subsidizes only one group of scientists and threatens to jail the rest.
Then there’s the common sense issue. What kind of idiot believes that such small changes would be catastrophic to life on earth when there have been periods of much greater warming in the past?

How is it possible that so many fall for the likes of Bill Nye, the fake science criminal guy?

            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5znPwjfbNh8

The whole scam is about control and nothing more. The push for electric cars is part of that control.

            Aug 19, 2017 19:01 PM

The push for Electric Vehicles is multi-faceted and is searching for a way to break the dependence on hydrocarbons for vehicles, and instead to electrify the whole transportation network from trains to buses to cars to bikes.

For many countries the push to electric vehicles really deals much more around targets of cutting down on smog and improving air quality. That is why China went after Electric Buses first to try to make a dent in their terrible air quality.

            Aug 19, 2017 19:04 PM

Regardless, that growing sector is going to need raw commodities to keep manufacturing the vehicles, batteries, or various inputs and improvements needed to the Energy grid, and I’m happy to look for extractive companies able to capitalize on the growth trend.

            Aug 19, 2017 19:34 PM

Tesla’s long term viability is questionable and its success so far is due to government support (cronyism).

Free markets liberate the maximum number of people by making life as cheap as possible and decentralizing power. Governments do just the opposite and pushing/forcing electric cars on society is consistent with that.

As for China’s smog, that can be dealt with without going electric if they choose to —Western cities already have. Catalytic converters work very well.

            The electric car:
-cuts almost no CO2 (of course, that’s a good thing)
            -costs taxpayers a fortune
-generates more air pollution than traditional gasoline cars

            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=17xh_VRrnMU

            Aug 19, 2017 19:51 PM
            Aug 19, 2017 19:43 PM

Matthew – Those are interesting videos and they raise some good points calling into question some of the assumptions around Electric Vehicles, but they are not without their own propaganda points and misinformation as well.

They make the case that Electric Vehicles are “Coal – powered” and for some parts of the world that will be the case on a certain percentage of vehicles depending on the power inputs. However, their numbers are quite skewed, because they left Nuclear Power completely out of the equation, and they made calculations that all power that was not Solar/Wind was therefore… Coal, which is wrong, because there are also Nat Gas plants, Biomass plants, and Hydro power in utilized in both the US and all over the globe.

This premise that EVs are almost all coal powered is not accurate and is just as slanted as the views on the other side. Yes, there is a fair bit of coal still contributing to the US energy grid, but Nat gas and Nuclear in particular with Hydro, Solar, and Wind as growing contributors are also powering the EVs and the modern world. Obviously it is a mixed energy input, and that greatly affects their assumptions on the Carbon footprint used to calculate their totals. Coal will only continue to be phased out over time thus further reducing the delta on the CO2 emissions and economics of EVs, yet they act like everything is static in the energy sector, (which couldn’t be further from the truth).

Also, Oil companies and Auto plants have had their fair share of government subsidies and tax advantages over the years, just like Tesla or other automakers are now receiving. The government was just as involved in in gas guzzlers from the PetroDollar to auto Bail Outs, so there is 2 sides to that coin for sure.

Look how much money we have spent on the military in the past through today to ensure our Oil interests. This enormous military expense dwarfs any of the subsidies that Electric Vehicles are receiving and then some.

They then point out at the battery components are mostly dangerous rare earth products, but in fact most of the batteries are made of Nickel, Copper, Cobalt, Lithium, and Manganese. Only incredibly small (if any) rare earths are utilized and it depends on the type of battery. Those elements are mined responsibly in many jurisdictions, so the argument that their construction is more dangerous to the environment than traditional autos is way off base.

Next they make the point that most Electronic vehicles have ranges less than 100 miles, and base all their numbers on that. Clearly that is not the case and those numbers are very massaged. Many EVs have ranges far beyond that now, and they are improving on this every year, and will only continue to expand the ranges:

            > 2017 Tesla Model S – Driving Range: 335 miles
            > 2017 Tesla Model X – Driving Range: 295 miles
            > 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV – Driving Range: 238 miles
            > 2017 Volkswagen e-Golf – Driving Range: 126 miles
            > 2017 Hyundai Ioniq Electric – Driving Range: 124 miles
            > 2017 BMW i3 – Driving Range: 114 miles
            > 2017 Nissan Leaf – Driving Range: 107 miles
            > 2017 Kia Soul EV – Driving Range: 93 miles (I bet they break 100 miles range next year)

In summary, there are clearly huge assumptions that many wacko environmentalists make about the how “green” or efficient or environmentally friendly EVs are — no doubt about that. However, conversely, super-slanted videos like these tow have their fair share of disinformation. What is most noteable is that beyond jumping to their own convenient and erroneous conclusions, there is also an underlying hidden assumption that there will be no further innovation in the technology.

Prices and economies of scale will come down, and there are dozens of battery plants being built and car companies making the transition beyond just was Tesla is working on. Tesla steals the headlines, but it is a far bigger trend in motion than just one auto company or GigaFactory. The trend is happening for a multitude of reasons, and it is a complex issue, but the EVs are coming whether people like them or not, but gasoline powered cars aren’t going to be phased out suddenly either.

It is definitely an interesting investing theme, and there is far more to Energy Storage and mobile energy in Battery form, than simply EVs anyway. The backup power for Solar & Wind or mobile off-site business power are huge growth areas. Laptops, Tablets, Smart phones, Power tools, Farming Equipment, Mining equipment, drones, etc… are all utilizing battery power regardless of the EV debate.

            The only constant is change….

            Aug 20, 2017 20:10 AM

Ex, the bottom line is, Tesla couldn’t have done it without a lot taxpayer money and the gov was happy to it to them. The government wants to force electric on everyone because it further centralizes its power not because of this idiotic AGW scam.

Only the economically illiterate (90+% of the people thanks to Keynesian brainwashing) might believe that the gov knows better than the market and the market for EVs isn’t there yet without government help. Remember, whatever the government subsidizes, you get more of. That includes Teslas, fake science, and poverty – to name just three.

P.s.- The videos I posted had nothing to do with my views. I found them just yesterday to include with my comment for the tidbits that were good.

            Aug 20, 2017 20:11 AM

Correction: “…the gov was happy to GIVE it to them.”

            Aug 20, 2017 20:34 AM

Yes, I do agree with you about government subsidies pushing things on the people, but my point above is that they did the same thing with the Auto industry for decades. Also, look at the tomfoolery around the politics of the PetroDollar and the huge government bail outs of US auto companies back in 2008 and 2009 that wasted US tax money interrupting the free market system. If it truly was the free market system, without government interference, then those US auto makers would have gone the way of the Dodo.

Again, think of all the Massive amounts of money spent on the military industrial complex chasing after our Oil interests for the last few decades in the Middle East. That blew exponentially more tax money to keep the fossil fuels game going and the money they’ve given to Tesla pales in comparison.

            Aug 20, 2017 20:03 PM

U.S. military spending is not an appropriate analogy. There is an obvious legitimate market for oil whether the U.S. loses its grip on it or not. It remains the single most important commodity. (Silver arguably comes in second.)

            Aug 20, 2017 20:13 PM

The auto industry bailout (which Ford did not need) is also not a good analogy since it nothing to do with the real market for vehicles. It was cronyism for sure since the public was looted to prop-up their bad decisions but, absent the gov’s guarantees, sound business practices would have kept problems to a minimum. Henry Ford didn’t need the gov to get going. That’s the difference.

            Aug 20, 2017 20:14 PM

So, the industry would not have gone the way of the Dodo, just the GM and Dodge Dodos would have.

            Aug 20, 2017 20:47 PM

Yes, I didn’t mean the whole auto industry, just the companies that had not executed, and were bankrupt, and should have gone the way of the Dodo, if the free markets were allowed to operate on their own. Those businesses were bailed out at the taxpayers expense, and I see little difference in the thievery between that and subsidies.

As for the for the wars for Oil, I never said anything about Oil being abandoned. My point was that the huge amount of taxpayer money spent on military efforts and proxy wars, all with the aim of securing Oil for American businesses and to keep the costs at the pumps reasonable, was a huge drain on the average citizen and equates to theft through taxation to fund those military operations. Sorry, but I see very little difference in huge swaths of money that our government has thrown at keeping the auto industry afloat and “managing” the oil/gas prices, versus the subsidies electric cars are getting.

            Aug 20, 2017 20:51 PM

The lobbyists and paid for politicians (and the laws the pass) haver been just as prevalent with gasoline powered cars for decades, and so the latest efforts to underpin EVs are just the latest in a long history of cronyism, as it relates to the transportation and energy sectors.

I am as fine trading Platinum & Palladium or Oil stocks to support that industry as I am trading Lithium, Cobalt, Copper, and Nickel miners for the EVs. They are all extractive industries, and supply & demand fundamentals are there to support their future expansion.

Re: “I see little difference in the thievery between that and subsidies.”

Of course, there’s no difference at all if we are talking about the theft. But my point is that Tesla couldn’t have been successful without huge amounts of taxpayer money because, in the real world, the business doesn’t work. The same has never been true of the auto industry as a whole.

Note that the big banks also needed bailouts in 2008. Is that because banking doesn’t work in the real world? Of course not. Like the auto industry, the banking industry simply operated with the knowledge that it could socialize its losses after leveraging to the moon to privatize the largest possible profits. They responded to reality as they knew it. That’s the moral hazard that’s built into the system.

You’re missing my point with your oil talk as well. Whether the U.S. is securing oil for its citizens or power over the rest of the world, or both, has nothing to do with my point. Oil is an economic industry that does not need propping up.

            Aug 20, 2017 20:40 PM

Matthew it would appear we are discussing different points here, but I’ll reply to a few of the points you raised (only it will take a few posts due to the 1 link limit without going to moderation for a day):

            1) I was categorically against bailing out BOTH the Auto companies and Banks that had failed. If is business fails it fails and the free market equalizes those industries by competition, innovation, and supply and demand.

In reference to your statement question:

“Is that because banking doesn’t work in the real world? Of course not.”

I would disagree. There are banks that run bad business and fail all the time…. So YES, Banking often fails in the “Real World” and none of them should be “Too Big to Fail”.

            Aug 20, 2017 20:45 PM

I mentioned that the regular auto industry had been subsidized for decades, because it has. There are many times the governments desire for more Auto sales and GDP numbers caused to take many actions that subsidized, or allowed insane tax breaks to the Auto sector to stimulate consumer demand and increase exports.

That isn’t supposed to be a controversial statement and the cronyism has been EXACTLY the same ilk of political pressure and taxing citizens to throw Big Auto a bone for a long time.

            Your responded.

“Tesla couldn’t have been successful without huge amounts of taxpayer money because, in the real world, the business doesn’t work. The same has never been true of the auto industry as a whole.”

            _________________________________________________________
Here is a succinct response on the subject:

How much does the U.S. subsidize the automotive industry?

“Direct subsidies are limited to environmental issues (paying tax rebates for EVs).

Indirect subsidies are varied in number and application. Oil, which powers most automobiles, is subsidized by billions per year. So without the oil subsidies, the car market would crash.

A number of protective measures are in place to help US manufacturers over foreign makers, but those protections aren’t subsidies, and they are ineffective when the foreign makers have local factories.

As the US has bailed out the US makers with direct subsidies before, the implied “too big to fail” gives a direct benefit to the makers, as they are a lower credit risk if the US government steps in to cover shortfalls, as they have before and can easily do again. So though not a direct subsidy, the implied backing of the US government keeps their operating costs lower than they would otherwise be.”

            Aug 20, 2017 20:53 PM

As for the Oil discussion, I can think of few areas where the US has intervened so openly in the pricing mechanism for its citizens, or manipulating trading partners, or most importantly in using military force (and burning through Trillions in tax money on the military industrial complex) to secure ongoing supply channels.

This is obviously to keep the Auto industry propped up. If gas cost $8 a gallon many would ditch their cars for public transport, would car pool, would work from home, or multi-car families would drop down to 1 auto. This would CRUSH the auto industry, so the government, lobbyist, politicians, and process is designed to keep the pricing down and Americans buying more cars.

BTW – If “Cash For Clunkers” was a huge subsidy to the American consumer to ditch old cars and buy, buy, buy new cars and support the crashing auto industry back in 2008 and 2009. (All the tax payers expense of course)

            You wrote:

Yeah, I never said anything about propping up Oil. It has over 3000 uses (especially in chemical, paint, plastic, and lubricants). That was NEVER my point. The point was the PetroDollar politics and war for the sake of Oil all to keep the cost goods for Americans (often at the detriment to the rest of the world).

            Aug 20, 2017 20:02 PM

Geez Ex, you’re still completely missing it. Of course businesses of all kinds fail! You’re focusing on bailouts within legit sectors that don’t need government help no matter how much cronies might claim otherwise. Tesla needed massive help just to get started. The auto and banking industries can absolutely be successful in a free market if they had to be. Not Tesla.

            Aug 20, 2017 20:37 PM

I’ve never once disputed that Tesla couldn’t be in business without the subsidies, and we are in complete agreement there.

Where we differ is that I just don’t see it as any different that all the other auto companies that would have failed without the government’s hand in the cookie jar, without them manipulating domestic gas prices, and the auto industry has been propped up at a number of periods of time in this country. My point is that it is just more of the same….. and there were times (as referenced above as recently as 2008-2009) where US auto makers would have been out of business without the government bail outs…. So they had FAILED as a business and could not stand on their own 2 feet.

Those companies needed the government handout to get ramped back up because their business was over. Other companies were struggling, and so they launched “Cash For Clunkers”. How is that not government intervention and propping up markets and companies so they wouldn’t fail? I just don’t see that as any different than subsidizing Tesla while it is getting ramped up (with the exception of EVs being new technology versus an old technology). The 2008 and 2009 GMs were new just like the Teslas are, and GM was failing, so the government kept them in business so they could improve efficiencies at their plants and rightsize their operations.

In addition I tire of discussing just Tesla, as they are only 1 company and the majority of domestic and foreign auto makers are phasing over into EVs as well. As I mentioned earlier, Tesla may steal the headlines, but they are NOT the whole Electric Vehicle market, nor anywhere close to it. I’m more interested in the trend in the entire sector and not obsessing over the actions of just one company.

After following the EV industry every week for years, it often irks me that people place a disproportionate importance on Tesla and what Elon Musk is doing. Elon is NOT making all those Electric Buses or millions of E-Bikes in China. Elon and Tesla are not supplying all of Asia or Europe or the US for that matter with all the EVs. That would be like analyzing the entire Gold industry by what happens to Goldcorp or Barrick. It’s a big world out there and EVs are only a part of the Battery Tech market in first place.

            Aug 20, 2017 20:48 PM

Bottom line, the emergence of Electric Vehicles would have happened without Tesla, and will happen even if the government subsidies went away (albeit at a slower pace).

The interest from dozens of Auto and Tech companies in creating new EVs speaks just as much to the spirit of innovation, the trends in technology (GPS, Radar, laser scanning, computers, etc…) and for many it is seen as a means (for better or worse) in easing pollution concerns in major population centers.

I just don’t buy that the ONLY reason is so that the government can control us all and take away our freedom through gas-powered vehicles. (although I agree they’ll do as much to control things as possible….. but they do that in every sector from Food and farmland to medicine and healthcare).

It just the same old tune with government trying to steer the ship, but this is merely an idea whose time has come and not all the reasons are about control was my original point.

For some reason I cannot reply directly to Matthew’s comment.

I’m an environmental scientist. I have worked with countless other scientists, engineers, and techs, and not once have I ever seen, heard-of, or suspected that data was falsified, or bought. If you understood the realities of working in a scientific field, then you would understand just how ridiculous the idea that scientists the world over could be all falsifying their data at once.

The warming that our planet is experiencing is real, that is a scientific fact. Is the warming anthropogenic? In my opinion, yes. However, I am not a climate scientist, I did study climate science in school, but am currently an Agrologist.

I’ve read along here for a while, and I will say that Matthew has a talent for charts, but a scientist he is not.

          Matthew says:
          …..”The electric car:
-cuts almost no CO2 (of course, that’s a good thing)
          -costs taxpayers a fortune……”

I’m thinking out loud. (Not a criticism, Matthew.)
I’m a global warming denier. After all we’ve had CO2 levels in the past at many times higher concentrations, which did not lead to thermal runaway.

So here’s my question: “why is no CO2 emission a good thing?”

          I know three things.
          1. Plants grow faster with increased CO2 levels.
          2. The human population on earth is increasing quite fast, needing more and more food.
          3. All human food derives from plants either directly or indirectly.

So why is the current level or lower of CO2 the best level of CO2?
          Just asking….

            Aug 19, 2017 19:32 PM

We agree, CFS. I said it’s a good thing that the electric car cuts almost NO CO2. Proponents claim that it does cut CO2 and (for once) it’s a good thing that they are wrong.

BILL JOY FINDS THE JESUS BATTERY

      08.16.17 – TEVEN LEVY

“As Joy explains it, Ionic’s innovations combine the advantages of the familiar alkaline batteries we buy at the drugstore (cheap, safe, and reliable) with those of the more expensive, fire-prone lithium batteries in our computers and phones (powerful, rechargeable, and more earth-friendly). He claims Ionic’s new approach is a big step to cheaper, safer, and more efficient batteries will not only power our devices and vehicles, but also enable an “energy internet” based on renewable sources.”

      > “What’s the simplest way to describe what’s different about this approach to batteries?”

“In a normal battery, you have some ingredients, like lithium or alkaline, and a separator, like a piece of cloth that you put between them. Then you pour in a liquid so that the ions can move around. Bad things happen with liquids. Films form, things go into [the] solution and run around and react with each other—you have safety issues like the battery catching fire. To be solid instead of liquid is something people have been striving for for 100 years. But in this battery, you have no liquid. You have just a plastic, a polymer, that replaces the liquid, so it’s solid. It’s a pretty big difference from a chemistry standpoint. It also turns out that this polymer just happens to be essentially a fire retardant material. So when you build batteries with this polymer, you don’t have a safety problem.”

Tech Companies Continue Efforts To Banish Extremist Accounts
By BARBARA ORTUTAY – Associated Press – Fri Aug 18, 8:11PM CDT
NEW YORK (AP) — Tech companies’ efforts to banish extremist groups and individuals are continuing as a social network popular with extremists disappeared from Google’s Android app store.

Gab had already been unavailable in Apple’s store, though it remains accessible on the web.

The banishments come in the wake of the deadly clash at a white-nationalist rally last weekend in Virginia. Civil rights advocates welcomed the moves, but say more needs to be done — and more should have been done earlier.

Here is a look at some of the technology services that have banned hate groups or have otherwise come out against white supremacists and their supporters:

    ___

    AIRBNB

Ahead of the rally, the housing booking service Airbnb barred rentals to people it believed were traveling to participate. The company said it used its existing background checks and “input from the community” to identify users who didn’t align with its standards.

    ___

    SOCIAL MEDIA

Facebook removed several groups and individuals from its service and Instagram for what it calls violations of terms banning hate speech. Groups included Vanguard America, Physical Removal and Genuine Donald Trump. The company uses a combination of artificial intelligence and human moderators to weed out groups, posts and people that violate its policies. Spokeswoman Ruchika Budhraja acknowledges this is a difficult task, as determining what is hate speech is more difficult than something like a beheading video or child pornography.

Twitter, meanwhile, appears to have suspended the account for neo-Nazi site Daily Stormer, though the company doesn’t comment on individual accounts.

    ___

    APP STORES

Google has removed Gab, a social network that extremists flocked to, for “hate speech,” Gab tweeted. Gab’s logo is a green cartoon frog, reminiscent of “Pepe the Frog,” the internet meme that’s become a symbol of the “alt-right,” a fringe movement that’s known for its racist, anti-Semitic and sexist views.

    ___

    SERVICE PROVIDERS

The Daily Stormer’s publisher said he has been effectively “banned from the internet” after mocking the victim of a deadly car attack during the protests in Charlottesville. Andrew Anglin said by email he is “figuring out the next step” after four domain registration companies refused to service his site. GoDaddy and Google said earlier that the site violated their terms of service. After briefly reappearing under a Russian domain name, the site was again offline Wednesday after the security company Cloudflare Inc. dropped him as a customer, leaving the site vulnerable to hacking attacks.

Email marketing firm MailChimp said some groups had their accounts terminated after it changed its terms of service on Monday to exclude customers whose primary purpose was “inciting harm” or promoting “discriminatory, hateful, or harassing content.” Squarespace, a website service company, said it banished some sites out of concern they “could be used to facilitate or promote behavior that gives rise to violence.” Identity Evropa, a northern California hate group that helped organize participants in Charlottesville, tweeted that it had lost service from MailChimp, Squarespace and PayPal.

    ___

    ONLINE PAYMENTS

PayPal has been removing payment accounts linked to known hate groups in the months leading up to Charlottesville, according to the company and a civil rights organization it was working with. For example, the account for the Daily Stormer was banned several months ago. In a blog post, the company said it “strives to navigate the balance between freedom of expression and open dialogue — and the limiting and closing of sites that accept payments or raise funds to promote hate, violence and intolerance.”

Online fundraising sites GoFundMe and Patreon also banned people and canceled fundraisers associated with right-wing hate groups. GoFundMe confirmed that it removed “multiple campaigns” for James Fields, the driver accused of driving his car into protesters and killing a woman.

    ___

    SPOTIFY

The music streaming service banned music it said “favors hatred or incites violence against race, religion, sexuality or the like” after it was alerted to white supremacist bands on its service by the music blog Digital Music News . The blog found bands identified by the Southern Poverty Law Center as white power music streaming on Spotify.

    ___

    FINDING LOVE

Dating site OKCupid tweeted that it had banned white nationalist Christopher Cantwell, saying “There is no room for hate in a place where you’re looking for love.”

    ___

    OUTSIDE THE TECH WORLD

Discover said Thursday that it is “in the process” of terminating the accounts of hate groups. The racial justice group Color of Change had called on the credit card company, along with American Express, Mastercard and Visa, to stop processing funds for hate groups.

Amex said most of the websites it was alerted to by activists already do not accept its credit cards. The company said it is “currently reviewing the other sites and will take the appropriate actions. We maintain the right to terminate any relationship that is harmful to our brand.”

Mastercard said in a statement that it reviewed the websites “provided by civic leaders and others” and shut down the use of cards on sites it saw as inciting violence. At the same time, the company said it generally doesn’t block cards “based on our disagreement with specific views espoused or promoted.”

Visa issued a similar statement, saying that while it bans illegal transactions, it does not restrict “lawful expression of views, even if we may find the organization or its positions to be offensive.”

PARIS (AP) — From Barcelona to Times Square and beyond, extremists have used vehicles as deadly weapons with alarming frequency in recent years, whether to promote jihad, get attention or express despair.

In response, ugly concrete blocks as well as more aesthetic deterrents are sprouting up in front of landmarks and ordinary public places around the world. Security experts say such barriers would have minimized the fatal damage wreaked on Spain this week — yet warn that as long as motor vehicles exist, some risks will always remain.

While cars and trucks have been used for scattered violence for generations, the last 13 months have seen nearly a dozen vehicle-ramming attacks in Europe and the U.S., as well as car bombings in the Mideast and beyond. Here are some ways cities and governments are countering the threat:

THE BASIC BOLLARD — AND HOW TO IMPROVE IT

Whether a post dug into a sidewalk or an unwieldy hunk of concrete, bollards are the most common anti-car shield. Impact engineers study the ideal height and shape of such barriers to resist damage from various vehicles. Intelligence agencies are increasingly working with manufacturers on optimal bollard design.

One notably ended a rampage in Times Square in May by a mentally disturbed driver who ran down 23 people. New York City has installed steel bollards all around town, and some streets near the stock exchange, the 9/11 memorial and police headquarters have retractable barriers that prevent vehicles entering at all.

The use of bollards is more widespread in recent years, but not ubiquitous. After a Tunisian claiming links to the Islamic State group killed 86 people on a Nice beachfront last year with his truck, residents questioned why city authorities hadn’t installed barriers — even though IS extremists had explicitly encouraged followers to “crush” enemies with cars.

Because permanent barriers usually need to be anchored deeply to resist a vehicle’s impact, they aren’t generally installed on bridges — which were the targets of two attacks in London this year.

Engineers are tackling that challenge with new synthetic materials that can withstand major impact without needing a deep anchor, according to Margaret Gilmore, expert on intelligence at Britain’s Royal United Services Institute.

Scotland Yard reviewed the security of 33 bridges around the British capital, and several were fitted with special vehicle-resistant barriers as a result.

Spain’s La Vanguardia newspaper reported Friday that barriers were being installed in the popular Mediterranean tourist destinations of Calafell, Calella and Reus a day after a van plowed through a crowd in Barcelona, killing 13 people and injuring 120 others.

      ___

      ADAPTING THE ENVIRONMENT FOR SAFETY

Cities trying to maintain architectural harmony while increasing safety are using strategically planted trees and metal lampposts — or adding black paint and carvings to make a state-of-the-art bollard look Victorian.

The British soccer club Arsenal’s stadium is seen as a model for incorporating “vehicle exclusion” security into its landscape: It’s surrounded by giant cannons, concrete benches and huge letters reading ARSENAL that are big enough to stop a multi-ton truck from reaching the crowds.

Train stations are expanding pedestrian zones on their perimeters, to further cushion passengers from vehicular threats.

Since last year’s truck attack in Nice, the city has launched a 30 million-euro ($35.3 million) security effort aimed primarily at “keeping pedestrians and vehicles as far apart as possible,” according to municipal security chief Lauriano Azinheirinha.

That includes a four-kilometer (2.4-mile) stretch of waist-high posts connected by steel cables along the glistening shorefront Promenade des Anglais, as well as remote-controlled extendable posts and a citywide sensor system.

Cities can also deploy temporary measures to keep car attacks at bay. In apparent response to the Barcelona violence, a row of police vans lined the front of the Eiffel Tower on Friday, forming a makeshift barrier between the nearest street and the already heavily secured ticket line, which was packed with summer tourists from all over the world.

      ___

      UPSTREAM PREVENTION AGAINST VEHICLE ATTACKS

Drivers who targeted Nice, London and Barcelona all used rented vehicles in their rampages, prompting calls to crack down on rentals with closer checks of applicant drivers and a codified system for reporting suspicious renters.

In Britain, guidance for armed police been revised so that firing at a vehicle on the move is accepted for incidents such as those seen in Nice and Westminster.

All these protections don’t come cheap. Azinheirinha in Nice has urged a collective EU project to protect pedestrians in Europe’s leading cities.

Heightened intelligence efforts are also essential, said Gilmore. The focus “has got to be on stopping them … once they’re radicalized but before they carry out an attack,” she said.

      Aug 16, 2017

And, according to one famed geologist, the sector is likely to go up from here. Speaking with Kitco News Wednesday, Exploration Insights’ Brent Cook said even if he’s neutral on the price of gold, he sees potential for the junior mining space. ‘I’m surprised at how well gold has held up,’ he said. ‘But, what I’m really positive on is the interest I’m seeing in the gold sector, especially in the junior sector. I’m seeing a lot more money coming into exploration from major mining companies.’ Despite pressure earlier in the week, gold prices made a comeback Wednesday following the release of the latest Federal Reserve minutes, which were deemed dovish.”

      > 2017 Langis-Hudson Bay Ag-Co Project, Ontario

“Following the acquisition of the Penna lands from Agnico at the Langis site, four rock grab samples from the Penna #7 shaft dump area were submitted for analysis. The table below provides details which returned up to 18% silver and 16% Cobalt. Samples contained abundant native silver.”

      >> Thorn Project Soil Results

“Using a 100 ppb cut off for the soil results, 69 samples are greater than 100 ppb Au, 44 samples are greater than 200 ppb, 28 samples are greater than 400 ppb, 12 are greater than 800 ppb with the two highest samples being 4,900 and 6,920 ppb Au.”

      >>> “Geological Mapping at the Chivas Zone Identifies a New Copper Trend at Thorn.

“Mapping was successful in identifying a 115m by 1200m open-ended corridor of copper mineralization with up to 1.14% Cu and 2.15 g/t Au from surface rock sampling. The best values from rock grab samples were 4.49 g/t Au, 4.38% Cu and 443 g/t Ag.”

The exploration results for $BBB $BXTMF at its multiple projects for #Cobalt #Silver #Gold and now #Copper are quite impressive on all the properties. Many investors were only looking at Brixton as a Gold company in the “Golden-Triangle,” but my interest was first piqued due to their really high grade Silver & Cobalt.

As investors search for #Cobalt sources outside of the conflict-ridden DRC, I had mentioned on a few different mining blogs that it doesn’t always occur with Copper or Nickel, but often occurs with Silver (like in Ontario). Many of the new “Cobalt” companies that are springing up do show some promise, and are hunting and pecking up in Ontario.

What I like about what Brixton’s projects (Langis and Hudson Bay) is that these were prior producing mines, with #infrastructure in place, and permitting should be easy with a history of mining in those locations. Brixton does have a number of balls in the air, but these recent results (when taken in context of the prior Silver/Cobalt historical exploration and mining) are definitely worth following up on to grow the resources further.

Distilled water definitely has advantages. Some would say that it can leach minerals from the body, so that it is best to add a liquid mineral supplement to it.

            Aug 19, 2017 19:08 PM

Distilled water is also good for keeping the cells of your car battery charged, but it is also considered “Dead Water”.

I could see adding in supplements to it, but believe filtering tap water is the easier solution and it cuts down on buying all the bottles or gallon jugs constantly at premium prices. Many people spend more per gallon or liter on water than they do on gasoline but seem to think nothing of that. People are great…..

Early Death Comes From Drinking Distilled Water

“The longer one drinks distilled water, the more likely the development of mineral deficiencies and an acid state.

I have done well over 3000 mineral evaluations using a combination of blood, urine and hair tests in my practice. Almost without exception, people who consume distilled water exclusively, eventually develop multiple mineral deficiencies.

Those who supplement their distilled water intake with trace minerals are not as deficient but still not as adequately nourished in minerals as their non-distilled water drinking counterparts even after several years of mineral supplementation.

The ideal water for the human body should be slightly alkaline and this requires the presence of minerals like

            calcium
            magnesium

Distilled water tends to be acidic and can only be recommended as a way of drawing poisons out of the body. Once this is accomplished, the continued drinking of distilled water is a bad idea.

Water filtered through reverse osmosis tends to be neutral and is acceptable for regular use provided minerals are supplemented.

Water filtered through a solid charcoal filter is slightly alkaline. Ozonation of this charcoal filtered water is ideal for daily drinking. Longevity is associated with the regular consumption of hard water (high in minerals). Disease and early death is more likely to be seen with the long term drinking of distilled water.”

What Are the Dangers of Drinking Distilled Water?
            by Barbaraa – Jun 18, 2015

            > Mineral Deficiencies

“Drinking distilled water robs your body of its natural source for many minerals essential to good health. This results in mineral loss in the body with increases your risk for osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, hypothyroidism, hypertension, coronary artery disease and premature aging.”

            >> Tooth Decay

“Because distilled water does not contain any fluoride, dentists are beginning to see an increased number of cavities in young children who drink bottled water. Consumers believe bottled, distilled water is safer than the water supplies in their local communities.”

            >>> Electrolyte Imbalance

The WHO and others studied the use of distilled water and found that because it is stripped of all minerals it can cause electrolyte imbalances in your body. Your body will leach electrolytes from your tissues in order to add them to the mineral free water you are drinking. This is necessary so that your body can function normally and eliminate waste. If the water redistribution process in your body is not functioning properly, you may experience fatigue, weakness, headache, muscle cramps and an abnormal heart rate.”

            http://www.livestrong.com/article/372479-what-are-the-dangers-of-drinking-distilled-water/

            Aug 20, 2017 20:31 AM

ditto…….”distilled water is pure water” (per Matthew)

            Aug 20, 2017 20:17 AM

I’m not sure how “pure” is the issue. See the two above articles. Just drinking distilled water is not a healthy idea. Filtering out tap water is a MUCH better solution, it is also pure, but doesn’t leech electrolytes out of your body.

            Aug 20, 2017 20:21 AM

Your body needs micro nutrients, they are almost as important as getting the right amount of vitamin D. Drinking distilled water will only rob you of the hardest to get nutrients that are much harder to obtain today because of the depletion of our soils by continued agricultural methods and not allowing the earth to replenish itself.

            Aug 20, 2017 20:17 AM

Mercola is ok on many topics but not this one. No one is going to “die early” (lol) from drinking pure water. A healthy diet is all you need for the minerals that you really need. People can research it themselves if they are interested.

            GREAT POST………thanks………

            Aug 20, 2017 20:25 AM

Bottom Line…………I am not going to drink public tap water………. 🙂

            Aug 20, 2017 20:33 AM

Btw, why would the WHO and Livestrong tell the truth about drinking distilled water when both want you to consume fluoride? (Distillation is the only way to remove all fluoride.)

            Aug 20, 2017 20:44 AM

There are plenty of filtration systems that remove the fluoride from tap water, along with chlorine, agricultural run off, sediment, pharmaceutical chemicals, and micro organisms in the water. (trust me I am no fan of fluoride, as it accelerated my thyroid issue, so I’m very aware…. Not to mention I have new age friends that tell me it will block my 7th chakra pineal gland activation with the divine… 🙂 )

Nobody is saying to drink the tap water straight out of the faucet, but filtering it and then refilling water, makes it just as pure as distilled water, without having to keep buying it.

Again, if people had a home distillery that would be good, and yes they can supplement the vitamins and nutrients their body needs (because you won’t get everything you need from the cardboard… I mean food being served at restaurants or in grocery stores today – where the soil it grows in has been depleted of most of the trace elements and micro nutrients).

My point, is that I don’t have to go buy bottled water (but do once in a while out of convenience) because for the last decade I’ve had a whole house filtration system, and a quality reverse osmosis system. Whether I’m boiling noodles or filling up a container of water for the day, it is is just as quality as distilled, and I don’t have to go keep buying jugs of distilled water every week.

            Aug 20, 2017 20:31 AM

Ex, I doubt that reverse osmosis will remove 100% of fluoride.
I never buy bottled water either and do not drink from plastic – even bpa free plastic (although I’m sure some types are perfectly safe).

            Aug 20, 2017 20:38 AM

“The unencumbered and subtle negative charge in distilled water attracts
the positively charged acidic waste products and helps flush them out of
the body. Perhaps this is why another common myth about drinking
distilled water is that it causes essential minerals to leach out of the body,
but nothing could be further from the truth.”

            Aug 20, 2017 20:09 AM

Thanks for those post Matthew, and it does help me to look at Distilled Water in a new light, and the critiques of distilled water may be on shakier ground than I realized.

It’s so difficult to wade through all the competing vantage points in health articles, but I did review the links you posted, and found a link to another site where an individual can by a home distilling unit. Not THAT I may have an interest in.

I think I’m going to fill this distilling unit with water that has already been through a reverse osmosis filtering process first. (Double-filtered) 😉

This may be one of the next things I order:

            Aug 20, 2017 20:16 AM

With regards to Fluoride, there are many Reverse Osmosis filters that absolutely do remove it. Again, lots of conflicting info out here, but I was promised the unit I have does, along with Chlorine and a number of other chemicals in my water supply.

            Does Reverse Osmosis Remove Fluoride?
by MICHAEL JUDGE Last Updated: Feb 20, 2014

According to a 2008 University of Nebraska guide, reverse osmosis can remove many typical impurities from water. These include dissolved minerals such as calcium and magnesium, as well as solid particles and pesticide contaminants. The guide states that RO systems will remove fluoride ions from water. This guide also notes that RO units can be configured to produce enough fluoride-free water for an entire household, and recommends that a reliable water treatment dealer be consulted to choose and install the most appropriate system.”

Interesting discussion on distilled vs otherwise cleaned water, guys. As Ex says, at times there is so much conflicting info it’s hard to know what’s right, which is why I used my weasel words ‘Some would say…’

I do think it is important to assure the quality of one’s drinking water, and it’s much better not to breathe chlorine fumes while bathing. But I imagine that a number of different approaches, if properly done, yield perfectly acceptable results.

Worth a mention that the mass medication of the populace with fluoride, which is of questionable benefit to teeth at best, and has a variety of ill effects (e.g. suppressing the thyroid gland), is a crime against all of us.

“Fiji Water is now America’s leading imported water. The company has spent millions pushing its environmental credibility and charity work.”

“But nowhere in Fiji Water’s glossy marketing materials will you find reference to the typhoid outbreaks that plague Fijians because of the island’s faulty water supplies, the corporate entities that Fiji Water has set up in tax havens like the Cayman Islands and Luxembourg, or the fact that its signature bottle is made from Chinese plastic in a diesel-fueled plant and hauled thousands of miles.”

Personally I have a whole house filter that takes out most of the calcium, sediment, fluoride, chlorine and hardness of the water for cooking, and washing purposes. Then we have the triple filter membranes that do the reverse osmosis under the sink for drinking water. We use resealable containers or bottles free from BPA, Chromium, and Arsenic.

Yes, I’ve seen so many presentations just like that and agree that many bottled waters are just public taps that use reverse osmosis to purify the water. As he points out, reverse osmosis is not without a few challenges, but it comes down to knowing what components are in the filters, how often one changes them, where they are stored, etc… It is still far better than just drinking the public tap water. I have an additional filter on our showers and it really helps with the chlorine/fluoride and not inhaling those in gas form while taking a hot shower.

I’ve been to an insane amount of water seminars where it is focused on alkaline water (where reverse osmosis is more acidic), so I supplement with some locally produced alkaline water, or use if for recovery after a night out drinking. I’ve also seen electron spun water, UV treated water, magical clay filtration, and on and on. I drank it all….. loved it all…… burped and then when home.

** If I had my way the water would be boiled and cooled, then filtered through reverse osmosis, then negative electron spin, then alkalized, then UV treated, then blessed by a mystic from each major faith in the world, then put into a Himalayan Sea Salt mug and then hugged by Amma the Hugging Saint.

So far I’ve got the filtration part going….. Still a long way to go for the perfect water.

There’s a controversial new double blind study that shows hangovers can be reduced by more than 99% by avoiding alcohol. I know what you’re thinking and I couldn’t believe it either but the results were conclusive.

            Aug 20, 2017 20:59 PM

Funny Matthew. That is a shocking revelation!

I’m curious though about the 1% of people getting hangovers that haven’t had anything to drink. Placebo Hangovers?

            Aug 20, 2017 20:04 PM

            That’s exactly my guess.

            Aug 20, 2017 20:54 PM

Placebo Hangovers would suck. What is the point of the dehydration and whiskey shits if you aren’t at least going to have an engaging social interaction and frivolity the evening before?

I mostly drink for pleasure, taste, and good company & conversation these days, but usually limit it to 3 drinks or less on a weekend night.

However, if it is a concert, or wedding, or friends party where I feel things may get a bit amped up, then I load up on B-Vitamins, Prickly Pear Cactus, and that Dihydromyricetin and try to eat regularly throughout the evening. I haven’t had a bad hangover in quite some time using those disciplines on the front end, and of course drinking quality WATER. (lol)

WASHINGTON (AP) — Billionaire investor Carl Icahn, who resigned Friday from an unpaid post as President Donald Trump’s adviser on deregulation efforts, stepped down as The New Yorker was preparing to publish a lengthy article detailing Icahn’s potential conflicts of interest and questioning the legality of his actions.

Icahn said in a letter to Trump released Friday that he would resign to prevent “partisan bickering” about his role that Democrats suggested could benefit him financially.

The resignation came just three days before The New Yorker was scheduled to post its story online and begin selling printed magazines on newsstands. In the story, the magazine points out potential conflicts and even possible criminal law violations involving obscure rules that require oil refineries to blend ethanol into gasoline.

“blending rules of ethanol into gasoline.”…..goes back to CARTER ….

        Aug 19, 2017 19:50 PM

the ethanol blend, or token 10%, was initiated to stretch the oil/gas at the time of the 1970’s oil embargo, and oil crisis. If anyone remembers the wait in line for gasoline in the 70’s, the 10% ethanol blended into gas, was so the oil cartel would not get pissed, …in addition they gave the oil companies a 10% tax incentive or right off from the income tax.

From farm to pharmaceutical, diesel truck to dinner plate, pipeline to plastic product, it is impossible to think of an area of our modern-day lives that is not affected by the oil industry. The story of oil is the story of the modern world. And this is the story of those who helped shape that world, and how the oil-igarchy they created is on the verge of monopolizing life itself.

my above two comments were about Novo, not GTT.

            Aug 20, 2017 20:03 AM

I see no sign of a top other than the very unscientific “feeling” that such a move can’t go on much longer. Such charts are very dangerous for both the longs and the shorts. It can and probably will come down very hard (temporarily) even without any negative news BUT it might double again (or more) first!

        Aug 19, 2017 19:10 PM

GTT has been brought up a number of times on the KER as one of the high flyers along with Novo the last month or so. We’ve mentioned it a few times as some of the stories that are going to light a fire in the sector, and as proof that investors are rewarding exploration plays again.

It’s good for the PMs that stocks like GTT and NVO have put in such epic runs, and it seems to have captured the attention of about half the people over at ceo.ca over the last few weeks.

    Thoughts on afterlife….
Such a topic instantly takes to Pharaohic Egypt and the old testament.
There is absolutely no doubt that people in that era believed in the afterlife.

For me the question is how they reached that conclusion.

Without any reasonable doubt, our current civilization is not the first civilization to reach a pinnacle of development.

There was at least one previous civilization that reached a similar peak about 15,000 years ago. This civilization that probably created Atlantis and was responsible for many of the megalithic structures on earth, was clearly capable of doing things we would find difficult today even with our best technologies. How difficult we would find it to create pyramids and other structures from irregular shaped granite blocks weighing up to 300 tons, such that it would be impossible to squeeze a piece of paper or a credit card into the space between the blocks. The egyptians who built the pyramids or the aztec or Maya that historians claim to have built similar structures are almost certainly not direct offspring of that earlier technological civilization. That technological civilization was probably eliminated by a flood (Noah’s flood) which was most probably caused by a meteor penetrating the atmosphere and striking North American Ice, which was covered with over a mile deep ice at that time.
The question is just how much knowledge was passed from the old technological civilization to the civilization that arose after the flood, and is belief in the afterlife part of that knowledge. Those thoughts are from the inner scientist in me, that always tries to use direct scientific logic first.

      CFS
      Aug 19, 2017 19:58 PM

Many have argued that the earlier technological civilization might have been of extraterrestrial origin.

Most global myths have stories of beings that came down from the skies and shared information with them, or taught them math, science, medicine, etc… and at times had epic battles in the skies over the Earth. There are plenty of anomalies in archaeology, mythology, and early records & history that lend credence to the theory. It is much less far-fetched than many of the wacky assumptions or beliefs that human beings hold.

There are trillions of stars in our Milky Way galaxy, and billions of galaxies in space, so to have the audacity to assume our backwater planet around a mediocre star is the only place there is life in the universe is the height of arrogance and ego.

            Aug 20, 2017 20:06 AM

Love it AJ, and I was going to bring that up, but didn’t want to launch into a large discussion or get people all riled up that feel they need to defend their personal belief systems. Since you posted it though, it is funny to note some of the silly questions from people like “why haven’t we heard anything back on our radio transmissions yet?” Just that question is laughable considering the minuscule distance our communications have traveled through space and the large time periods that would be necessary for a return call once other beings would respond (if they did via radio). The technology in spacecraft and travel of beings traveling at tachyon speeds or using wormholes or folding space, are beyond this radio signal test in first place.

In addition, most records are that beings visited quite a long time ago, and the archaeological records that have been unearthed, that don’t conveniently fit in the establishment timeline, are swiftly pushed to the side or ignored. When mythology from around the planet in various cultures talks about giants walking the earth, or shining ones, or god riding on dragons (spacecraft) or chariots on fire, or magical (think technological) weapons, etc… coming down an interacting with humans, or creating man in their image, those are tossed out as myth (often by people that believe angels and demons are coming down and interacting with humans instead 😉 )

Regardless just like there seems to be a consensus in many cultures about large floods in the past (and clearly their various and older cultures all didn’t descend from Noah and his kids) there are just as many references to the gods coming down and interacting with people in older societies.

If you then pile on all the waves and waves of sightings (both military and civilian) regarding modern day visitations, it far more sane to assume we are not alone out of the billions of galaxies out there. That’s an encouraging thought, because if humans are the only “intelligent” life, this would be a dismal universe indeed. 😮

Charts of the Day: Rally in Base Metals… What Does it Mean For Gold?

      The Hedgeless Horseman – August 20, 2017

“So my thinking is that either we have absolutely HUGE false break outs in the base metals that will lead to a severe reversal that will drag down all metals, or the bull market in base metals is just getting started and will take gold and silver along for the ride. I am personally leaning towards the latter, being a gold bull and all. If my “guess” is correct, this potential correction in gold should be quite shallow, before reversing higher and finally taking out that $1300 resistance zone.”

      http://www.thehedgelesshorseman.com/silver/charts-day-rally-base-metals-mean/

        Aug 20, 2017 20:31 PM

Good thoughts Excelsior but I remain cautious at best regarding gold and silver. The overhead resistence appears to be too strong to pierce. We need a fresh catalyst I feel.

          Aug 20, 2017 20:09 PM

I hear ya Ozibatla… When I’m cautiously optimistic, then I put a partial position in place, and keep dry powder for a pullback to average down into that position.

If I’m negative on a sector then I short it or at lease sell.

If I’m relatively bullish (like I am at present) then I go in rather heavy.

At present this one of the highest allocations to the largest number of Precious Metals and Base Metals stocks that I’ve had in some time, but if things turn south and break resistance, then I’ll lighten the load in the more liquid names. Obviously, my bet at present is for there to be a solid rally from late August – October, and so I put my money where my mouth is (possibly at my own peril !)

          You mentioned:

“We need a fresh catalyst I feel.”

If the US dollar fell out of bed down through 92 and into the high 80’s would that do the trick?

          Cheers!

            Aug 20, 2017 20:04 PM

Yeh look, if the dollar were to accelerate downwards into the 80s, I think that would help. However the dollar has been weak of late yet gold and silver continue to muddle around in this range weve seen for much of the year. This is why I feel the need for a fresh catalyst. Whether that is fear or worry driven, fundamental change, news release from a “big wig” advocating the benefits of PMs or any other hypothetical, Im not sure.

Not being a long term participant in the PMs market, Im still learning this caper. New developments continue to surprise me. The continued bear however does not.

Excelsior, do you think precious metals have a bigger effect on the base metals or vice versa?

            Aug 20, 2017 20:46 PM

Interesting thoughts Ozibatla. Yes, the PMs didn’t really respond much to the dollars recent fall, and it is not uncommon for the metals and greenback to travel in tandem, so they can go up and down together.

It is possible a new catalyst will be needed, like you say. However, sometimes with price movement a good fundamental driver isn’t always present. (it sounds counter intuitive because we crave cause/effect relationships). Gold and Silver could just start gradually moving higher, as general tension mounts globally, but then pick up momentum as the robo selling begins. Quite often price movement seems to defy all logic, but then people will work on assigning the fundamental retroactively as to why something like Oil or Bonds or the Dollar rises or falls. Pundits on news outlets scratch their heads in confusion, but latch on to a plausible explanation to be able to point their finger at something concrete. In following stocks or sectors it often really is just price action and the algos that trade them starting a trend based on momentum, or exhaustion of sellers, or price targets achieved, and then all the institutional and retail investors pile in putting more fuel on that trend. Then everyone scrambles to find out “Why did that happen?”

As for PMs versus the Base metals, I fell they can run separate from each other, but don’t feel that either sector really leads the other.

If the dollar gets really strong it can pressure all commodities, but then Gold and Silver are Precious Metals with different drivers and they act like an alternative currency or alternative to the currencies. PMI and CPI number may give things a nudge, or Fedbabble or political events may nudge a bit differently, but the interconnected web of all financial asset classes make it challenging to figure out which string is pulling what. That’s where charts, cycles, seasonality, analogs, and sentiment readings help smooth out all the noise.

Dr Copper is usually the driver in the commodity space, and OIl can affect the the commodity indexes due to it’s heavy weighting. Zinc is running on it’s own fundamental supply shortage/ demand peak. Metals like Nickel, Tin, Iron, Lead tend to move based on industry growth or inflation. There are also Lithium and Uranium that are energy related, and may track separately from the larger commodity space. The Soft Commodities also march to the beat of their own drum, but if commodity ETFs and Funds turn up due to the other ingredients, then they’ll benefit in tandem. Still an individual commodity like corn or coffee or sugar or soybean can do it’s own thing.

As a result, I pick the sectors I want to follow, am cognizant of large fundamental shifts in the resources supply/demand picture, but ultimately drill down into specific companies and what may drive them higher from a fundamental or technical picture.

Dr copper keeps heading closer to $3…..so how does one find out how clean or dirty the concentrate really is for any companies concentrate??? Especially if they are mixing dirty in with the clean

      Aug 21, 2017 21:59 AM

Hi Wolfster, most companies produce metallurgical studies as part of their Pre-Feasibility Study or Bankable Feasibility Study and it discusses their metal concentrates. Different rock deposits have different metals make ups and if there are lot of deleterious elements like arsenic, mercury, (or like with Arizona Mining too much Manganese) then they get smelter penalties to process the ore.

Some companies get smelter credits for having specialty metals or elements like tungsten or antimony in their concentrates. It really is a mixed bag, and it depends on the smelters their concentrates are being ship and sold to. Some companies blend their “dirty” and “clean” concentrates to dilute down the penalties but be able to process the combined metals product. Some companies also will produce different concentrates like a Copper concentrate (maybe with Gold credits) and a Lead Concentrate (w/ Silver/Zinc credits), etc….

Normally the company economic reports on Sedar or at times quarterly reports will highlight the metals recoveries and what type of concentrate they sell to the smelters. I’ve also heard if you sell lead or Zinc concentrate to Glencore that they keep much more of the Silver credits, bringing up how smelters pay the companies and on what percentage. Its a bit opaque, but definitely can affect the revenues earned on sales ask a kicker or a discounting factor with many types of base metal processing.

        Gold’s Sudden, Newfound Relative Strength

        AUGUST 18, 2017 – Jordan Roy-Byrne CMT, MFTA

“Although Gold failed to break above $1300/oz today (Friday), it remains in position to do so because of its renewed strength in real terms. As long as the US$ index does not rally hard, we expect Gold to break above $1300 and reach $1375. The gold stocks as a group have been lagging recently but in the event of a Gold breakout, we foresee significant upside potential as the group could play catch up.”

          Aug 21, 2017 21:42 AM

          Gold at $1294

          Silver at $17.06

        Aug 21, 2017 21:18 AM

        Absolutely. Likewise.

A collapse of some description in the worlds financial markets could be the catalyst in the long term. I say long term because one can never underestimate the can kicking that repeatedly rolls out. The catalyst like scenario to propel the PMs higher is all dependent of course on the possible margin call sell everything effect like we witnessed during the GFC if a collapse were to play out.

In the short to medium term… who knows whats it store? Volatility is a safe bet I wouldve thought?

A rise in the price of copper indicates the economy is improving but don’t get fooled by the wizards who could be behind a head fake in this commodity, we all know prices of everything are manipulated all the time, not just in gold. This could the one time that manipulation will catch a lot of people off guard. DT

      Aug 21, 2017 21:03 AM

That would be nasty if they were trying to fool the public about the economy by manipulating the price of copper higher, I wonder if they did that in 1929, my bet is yes. DT

About five years ago I was in Buffalo New York to see The Martin House. I couldn’t get into the main building because it was under extensive renovation, it was absolutely stunning. It is now totally renovated at a huge cost because they took their time to do it right, now they are working on Graycliff house which was Darwin Martin’s summer home just outside of Buffalo. Martin’s wife liked the summer home better because it allowed more light to enter and she had a vision problem. Frank Lloyd Wright thought of everything. When it is finished I would like to travel back to New York State. Buffalo has the distinction of being in the top seven cities having the best architecture in the world.

            Aug 21, 2017 21:12 AM

A lot of people do not know much about Wright, …..as you said he thought of everything, even building the furniture for the homes…..total concept……way ahead of most architects and builders.

            Aug 21, 2017 21:50 AM
