The Odds Of Bond Prices And US Equities Moving Down Together

Cory
February 22, 2018

Doc is with me this morning to recap the moves down recently in both bonds and US markets. It is uncommon for both of these markets to be moving down together but with the new financial world we are in that might be the case thanks to the central banks. We also discuss if the Fed would make any changes to it’s plan if this trend continues.

Hi Doc, if the market breaks down again more sharply than we saw a few weeks ago which stocks or stock do you see leading the decline. This Big Bull Market appears to be on it’s last legs and this volatility we are seeing in the markets and the cryptos keeps destroying wealth which is only replaced by government intervention. In my estimation there is a panic brewing and anything is better than a panic. If stocks begin another advance in prices or decline sharply the Reserve authorities will be beaten. Inflation is the game that will take this market down. DT

Because of the massive debt and deficit, Central Banks will be increasingly confined to only trying to support new debt. They will be creating a lot of new money, so the dollar is going to drop substantially in purchasing power.
As the bond market normalizes to more realistic interest rates, people will increasingly panic OUT of bonds. This money will initially go into the stock market.

Tesla Semi defies laws of physics and is passing us by if true, says Daimler’s head of trucks

    Fred Lambert – Feb. 21st 2018

“We still have a lot of questions about the Tesla Semi because it doesn’t seem to be achievable with current known battery technology.”

“Based on the performance numbers that Tesla released, the battery pack would have a capacity of about 1 MWh and that would be a very heavy and costly battery pack.”

“It doesn’t appear to be possible with the current battery cells that Tesla uses in its current vehicles in term of weight and cost. Most analysts seem to agree that at least some significant incremental improvements in Li-ion batteries would be required or even a breakthrough with a new type of batteries.”

If Daimler’s Head of Trucks, had bothered to listen to Elon Musk, he would not appear ill-informed.
Musk actuallt said that the capability for Tesla’s trucks was dependent on future improvement in battery technology. However, battery size and weight shrinkage over the last few years had been following its own Moore’s Law, and that if one extrapolated into the future a continuation of improvements, then the Tesla truck performance would be met by the time full production would start in a few years time.

Yes, batteries are only getting smaller, better and longer life, so the speed of innovation has been a geometric progression. Most don’t realize that many EVs now have a 200+ mile range, with some pushing 250 miles per charge. That is significantly better than the 100 mile threshold of just 2-3 years ago.

          Feb 22, 2018 22:22 AM

The orders for the Tesla Semi are continuing to come in from companies, Loblaws ordered 6 new trucks about 3 months ago, they want to be seen as progressive and ahead of the curve.

Hi Doc, I was up late watching the amazing gold medal women’s hockey final.
What do you think about the charts of OR and MAG? Thanks.
Happy Washington’s birthday. He was the father of our country.

BB, looks like OR is heading for a triple bottom in March. One then wonders whether it breaks lower after a bounce—remind me in about 2-3 weeks to look at it again and I’ll tell you what I think of it then. MAG like OR wants to move lower into April for an interim bottom. Then like OR, it’ll be questionable whether it wants one last low in MAY/JUNE.

The 30 year T bond and gold became negatively correlated in early December but are now v positively correlated once again. This bodes well for gold since bonds are oversold and due for some relief soon. It was also a good sign that gold did so well as the 30 year fell apart following the last Fed meeting.
