Cory
March 15, 2018

I wrap up the markets today with Chris Temple. On another day when the markets were up early we saw them selloff into the close. We discuss the constant back and forth of the markets that are not showing us any defined direction currently. There was also some inflation data in terms of imports that you might have missed.

*Woe to those miners operating in the Congo….. The DRC is NOT a place to operate. West Africa (Burkina Faso, Mali, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Senegal, etc…) is the only real area to play ball in as they’ve launched over 10 mines in the last few years, and have tons in development, and I wouldn’t touch the Congo with a barge pole. They are making all the same stupid mistakes Zimbabwe did and that South Africa is not making, and it will only end up backfiring, killing foreign investment, and train-wrecking their economies.

How Congo faced down some of the world’s biggest mining firms
Aaron Ross Thur Mar 15, 2018

“(Reuters) – In an ornate room in Democratic Republic of Congo’s presidential palace last week, some of global mining’s most powerful men faced off against government officials over proposed changes to the country’s mining code.”

“Facing the officials, including President Joseph Kabila, the executives at times threatened to pursue arbitration or close mines if the government went ahead with changes including royalty increases, according to one of the president’s top advisers, Barnabe Kikaya bin Karubi, who attended the meeting.”

“But there was no mistaking the sense of defeat as executives from Glencore (GLEN.L), Randgold (RRS.L), Ivanhoe (IVN.TO) and other firms descended the red carpeted stairs after six hours to accept before the media a mining code that hikes taxes and removes exemptions for cobalt and other minerals.”

“It was an extraordinary climb down for companies that had campaigned tooth-and-nail for six years for better terms, and the president signed the bill into law two days later.”

“Congolese officials close to the process say that, in being so publicly combative, the miners overplayed their hand, and in so doing hardened the government’s resolve. “We realised the bad faith on their part,” said Patrick Kakwata, president of the National Assembly’s Natural Resources Commission, which oversees mining legislation.”

Wind Farm Blades Eroding After Few Years At Sea

    12 March 2018

“Erosion repairs to the turbines could cost millions of pounds as the owners are forced to carry out emergency repairs to 140 of the turbines.”

“Critics of the so-called ‘green energy’ say it raises questions about whether wind power makes economic sense.”

Interesting little fact that should give metal bulls a little bit of solace: since 1984, which is the farthest stockcharts.com goes back for the $XAU, only two other times in history have the weekly bollinger bands (50,2 and 100,2–i.e., over 50 week and 100 week periods) been this narrow–1989 and 2007. In both prior instances we got a very large move higher over the ensuing 6 months (from 90 to 120 in ’89 and and from 140 to 205 in ’07).

Of course after the move up into 2007, we know what happened next. And the move up in 1989, while large, still didn’t take out the 1987 peak, and after petering out in 1990 was followed by an even larger decline over the next 2 years.

SILVER NEEDS TO BE TAKING OFF LIKE A ROCKET>>>>>

Unfortunately $silver is not going to do squat ahead of the FOMC meeting. Needless to say it looks extremely sick on the weekly charts in pretty much every aspect and even a tiny nudge lower could send it into a prolonged downtrend. Honestly is looks like 2000 all over again, where it based out for a couple of years prior and then broke down along with the stock market and drifted lower for 2 years.

The fact is since 2016 silver has made higher lows and lower highs. That’s not exactly a screaming bull market. Looks more like multi year basing to me with the possibility of new multiyear lows just like from the mid 90’s through 2002. Silver didn’t do anything until 2002, and it didn’t even break above its 1998 peak for good until 2006–very very late in the commodity bull.

        Mar 16, 2018 16:39 AM

Doh, meant to say its been making lower highs and lower lows!

spanky – regarding Silver…. Still waiting to see if Silver takes out $13.75 by the end of this month as you projected quite confidently.

“Silver is about to break down on the weekly and months charts. It will definitely be taking out the 2016 low by late March. The bloodbath begins today.”

“Silver miners are headed back to new multi year lows too, though I am not sure they will take out the 2016 low.”

Actually, Spanky has some good comments on the stinking silver……Really, hard to believe the silver price is stuck in place……..JMO

          Mar 16, 2018 16:41 PM

most of the comments are sensational and again just 3 weeks ago he was calling for Silver dipping below $13.75 by the end of March. If they weren’t so over the top bearish, and were grounded more in reality then they may offer some value.

            Mar 16, 2018 16:44 PM

the dozens of comments like this offer little helpful insights for traders on Silver:

Spanky does have a tendency to get over excited on stinking silver…… 🙂

            Mar 16, 2018 16:48 PM

I am hoping silver goes lower, ….I think it is time to start accumulating again….

            Mar 16, 2018 16:49 PM

I think a ratio of 100 to 1 , would be favorable to the bugs…….

            Mar 16, 2018 16:56 PM

Yes, if the Gold:Silver ratio really gets to 100, then I’ll find more dry powder to buy with both hands.
