Where’s the outrage over Kerry’s secret meetings on the Iran deal?

BY MARC A. THIESSEN Special to The Washington Post

WASHINGTON

Democrats routinely express outrage over claims of collusion with a foreign power to undermine our democracy. So where is the outrage over revelations that former secretary of state John Kerry held not one but two secret meetings with Iran’s foreign minister to strategize over how to undermine President Trump’s plans to withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal?

An Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman confirmed the meetings after the Boston Globe broke the news, declaring, “We don’t see the U.S. just as Mr. Trump; the United States is not just the current ruling administration.” Think about what this means. Iran is a terrorist state responsible for the deaths of hundreds of Americans in Iraq, whose leaders hold rallies where thousands chant “Death to America!” Kerry was working with a sworn enemy of the United States to try to undermine the foreign policy of the elected president of the United States.

I thought we didn’t like Americans who colluded with our enemies.

Kerry’s meetings with Iran’s leaders were not isolated incidents, but part of a formal lobbying campaign that included phone calls with European Union leaders and meetings with the presidents of Germany and France in which, the Globe reports, he discussed “the details of sanctions and regional nuclear threats in both French and English.”

On Twitter, Trump suggested that Kerry might have violated the Logan Act, which says: “Any citizen of the United States … who, without authority of the United States, directly or indirectly commences or carries on any correspondence or intercourse with any foreign government … with intent to influence the measures or conduct of any foreign government … in relation to any disputes or controversies with the United States, or to defeat the measures of the United States, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than three years, or both.” In fact, no one has been prosecuted under the Logan Act in more than 160 years, and most conservative legal scholars consider it unconstitutional.

Although what Kerry did was probably not illegal, it was deeply hypocritical. Recall that in 2015, when Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., and 46 other Republicans wrote to Iran’s leaders informing them of the Senate’s constitutional role in approving international agreements, Kerry was incensed. “My reaction to the letter was utter disbelief,” he said at the time. “To write leaders in the middle of a negotiation … is quite stunning … [and] ignores more than two centuries of precedent in the conduct of American foreign policy,” Kerry said, adding that he would never have interfered in that way “no matter what the issue and no matter who was president.”

What a difference three years make.

Cotton is a sitting United States senator. The Senate has a constitutional role in foreign policy. Kerry is a private citizen.

He has a constitutional role in nothing.

Kerry’s defenders compare him to Henry Kissinger and other former secretaries of state who regularly meet with world leaders.

“Secretary Kerry stays in touch with his former counterparts around the world, just like every previous Secretary of State,” a Kerry spokesman said. But Kissinger does not conduct rogue diplomacy. When he meets with foreign leaders, he usually coordinates with the White House, often carrying messages for the president, and then briefs administration officials afterward. Kerry did none of this.

This is not the first time Kerry has interfered in U.S. diplomacy as a private citizen. In 1970, he flew to Paris and met with the North Vietnamese while they were in the midst of negotiating the Paris Peace accords with Kissinger. Kerry admitted then that his actions were “on the borderline of private individuals negotiating.” What he did last month was not on the borderline.

Kerry would not have had to resort to rogue diplomacy if he had negotiated a better deal. The agreement he struck could not even muster the support of a simple majority in the Senate, much less the two-thirds majority needed to ratify a treaty. As Sen. Ben Sasse, R-Neb., correctly points out, the Obama administration “made a bad deal with Iran without support from Congress. … American foreign policy makes lasting progress when it is led by the President, approved by Congress, and presented honestly to the American people.” Kerry has no one to blame but himself for Trump’s decision to withdraw. And he certainly has no business colluding with America’s enemies against America’s president.

I think the question of usury potentially has multiple parts: 1) is usury ethical and if so in what cases – between what people groups and types of transactions is usuary ethical (or not)? 2) in cases where usuary is ethical how can the corresponding interest rate be established by legitimate market forces?

      May 14, 2018 14:55 PM

      Terra

I would say that a very high (usurious) interest rate might be moral in the case of a great credit risk.

        May 14, 2018 14:05 PM

Actually Al, Higher rates encourage speculation rather than investment.
Actually during the mortgage mess minorities were targeted because the banks new they could receive a higher rate.
Also interesting enough during the 2008 fiasco the leading defaulter were women and the cause was medical bills.
There is no morality in usury according to the Bible.

          May 14, 2018 14:10 PM

I will add that Military members were also targeted.
To big to fail means nobody goes to jail.
Fines are the cost of doing business.

          May 14, 2018 14:07 PM

Is interesting that usury from one jew to another was forbidden – but not between jews and gentiles. To my knowledge, the jews are the only people group that have a different standard of usury between people within the tribe and those not in the tribe. One has to wonder if the early christians would have mirrored this principle and only assessed usury to non-christians, what would the world look like today. Probably would look very different.

            May 14, 2018 14:34 PM

It is my understanding that Muslims cannot engage in borrowing.

        May 14, 2018 14:59 PM

I generally agree Al. One would think with some of all of our technological innovations (e.g. blockchain) – the ability to borrow and make loans could work better and be a more open market. Banks more of less have a monopoly (with the force of government backing them). With a central authority setting the core interest rates, small errors can cause global crashes as we have witnessed over the past centuries.

    Mr.Korelin :

I wish you the best with your wife.

Usury goes much further than the credit card company’s.
Your comment left me feeling much like I did when I received the letter saying a child
molester was moving into my neighborhood.

We as American’s have been fear mongered into believing that matters involving finances and banks are better left to someone else.
You did nothing but re-enforce this with your comment “The only thing you can do”

I know that I am the one who is not suppose to be here. I am one of many who with the aid of a computer have educated themselves about the bankers and the practice defined in the Bible as “USURY”
Many think that divine wisdom established centuries ago does not apply to modern economics.
    I for one doesn’t.

    Proverbs 20:23
    The Lord detests double standards;
He is not pleased by dishonest scales.

      May 14, 2018 14:43 PM

I was a bit simplistic in my comment perhaps. I personally stary aware from high interest rates simply by not borrowing at them.

They could be left to “someone else because, the “someone else” is the entity loaning the money.

Of course, I believe that divine wisdom established centuries ago should apply to modern economics. But then, The Ten Commandments should apply to all liffe

No one in a secret society should be able to hold public office.

As for his current activities, in the context of the 2016 election and the political battle raging since the election, what is going on? A dispute between two factions of oligarchs? A puppet show for diversion and distraction?

Separate topic, can anyone point to any top-notch analyses of the Iran deal? I’ve tended to be in favor, but would like to see both sides presented in a thorough, fact based way.

      May 14, 2018 14:48 PM

I believe that if you google it, you could read the original.

      May 14, 2018 14:50 PM

You point about “secret society” is well taken. But the again, is “Skull and Bones” really just another name for a club of sorts?

If you’ve ever seen George Carlin’s skit, “It’s a club, and you and I ain’t in it!,” then I guess the term ‘club’ could apply. But it seems quite an understatement.

Charlotte Iserbyt’s grandfather was skull and bones…father too, if I remember correctly.

But the thing needed to settle the issue has not been done–exhuming Geronimo’s remains at Fort Sill.)

Dont be so hard on the credit card companies at 20+%, they have expenses.
Those payday loans are helpful to some people, they may not have anywhere else to go.

Pawn shops only pay 5 cents on the dollar for items, is there a difference?

I think people should simply accept there lot in life, besides, lifes not really a challenge until you have to sell blood, kidneys etc

Maybe what we need is new laws concerning indentured service, such as a person works for someone for food and lodging for x number of years, food and lodging to be negotiated.
A 1 kidney person might not command as much as a 2 kidney person.

Indentured service might solve alot of issues. Just sayin.

            Here’s how it works, Al

The World Bank hooks developing countries on debt by financing development projects that they know the country can’t afford.

When the engineered default inevitably arrives, the IMF steps in and does what they call a ‘Structural Adjustment Plan’ (SAP), in which they do a good impression of squeezing blood from a turnip.

The chief US negotiator at the Bretton Woods conference, Harry Dexter White, was a communist.

            The genius of the racket:

1- infrastructure projects that lead to default

2 – structural adjustment program that among other things privatizes many natural resource projects, opening them to the highest international bidders

3 – the infrastructure needed to extract the resources is already in place!

Obama, the supposed Muslim Israel hater, was put into the presidency by Jews like the Pritzkers, and his nominations to the Supreme Court, three for three, were all Jews (which would have made the US Supreme Court 55% Jewish in a ~2% Jewish country).

So why did he go against Israel and make the deal with Iran?

My theory has been maybe because the time was not yet ripe for open conflict with Iran, so this was a way to stall it until Syria could be dealt with.

The following quote from the Brookings Institute “Which Path to Persia” lends supports to that hypothesis, and futher suggests that it was a ploy to eventually paint the Iranians as intransigent in fulfilling their obligations.

“…any military operation against Iran will likely be very unpopular around the world and require the proper international context—both to ensure the logistical support the operation would require and to minimize the blowback from it. The best way to minimize international opprobrium and maximize support (however, grudging or covert) is to strike only when there is a widespread conviction that the Iranians were given but then rejected a superb offer—one so good that only a regime determined to acquire nuclear weapons and acquire them for the wrong reasons would turn it down. Under those circumstances, the United States (or Israel) could portray its operations as taken in sorrow, not anger, and at least some in the international community would conclude that the Iranians “brought it on themselves” by refusing a very good deal.”

Before Mr Kerry’s appointment as Secretary of State he was one of the leading voices that was calling for a 9/11 investigation.Amazingly he became very quiet. I can’t say that I blame him as people that continually call for a legitimate investigation wined up dead. The question I wonder about John Kerry is what was he doing in Antarctica the day of the election?

Merlin Miller, West Point grad (I know, that’s no guarantee of quality, but it means something):

“The writing and promotion of “Scofield’s Reference Bible” was a massive effort to subvert true Christianity to serve Zionist/NWO interests, instead. Through subtle but false reinterpretations of the Bible, the evangelical Christian community has come to unquestionably support the Israeli “state” and perpetual war in the Middle-East, rather than the teachings of Jesus, the Prince of Peace.

Throughout the 20th Century and with incredible support from the Rothchild controlled Oxford Press, various editions of Scofield’s Bible would actually create a new religion, Christian Zionism (Judeo-Christianity), altering words and meanings through deceptive footnotes.”

The Jerusalem Declaration on Christian Zionism is a joint statement issued by a number of Palestinian Christian churches dated 22 August 2006. It rejects Christian Zionism, concluding that it is a “false teaching that corrupts the biblical message of love, justice, and reconciliation.”

The signatories of the Declaration were Patriarch Michel Sabbah, then Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem (a Catholic), Archbishop Swerios Malki Mourad, of the Syriac Orthodox Archdiocese of Jerusalem, Bishop Riah Abu El-Assal, then Anglican Bishop in Jerusalem of the Episcopal Church in Jerusalem and the Middle East, and Bishop Munib Younan, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land.

            en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jerusalem_Declaration_on_Christian_Zionism

The Jerusalem Declaration on Christian Zionism:

Christian Zionism is a modern theological and political movement that embraces the most extreme ideological positions of Zionism, thereby becoming detrimental to a just peace within Palestine and Israel. The Christian Zionist programme provides a worldview where the Gospel is identified with the ideology of empire, colonialism and militarism. In its extreme form, it places an emphasis on apocalyptic events leading to the end of history rather than living Christ’s love and justice today.

We categorically reject Christian Zionist doctrines as false teaching that corrupts the biblical message of love, justice and reconciliation.

We further reject the contemporary alliance of Christian Zionist leaders and organizations with elements in the governments of Israel and the United States that are presently imposing their unilateral pre-emptive borders and domination over Palestine. This inevitably leads to unending cycles of violence that undermine the security of all peoples of the Middle East and the rest of the world.

We reject the teachings of Christian Zionism that facilitate and support these policies as they advance racial exclusivity and perpetual war rather than the gospel of universal love, redemption and reconciliation taught by Jesus Christ. Rather than condemn the world to the doom of Armageddon we call upon everyone to liberate themselves from the ideologies of militarism and occupation. Instead, let them pursue the healing of the nations!

We call upon Christians in Churches on every continent to pray for the Palestinian and Israeli people, both of whom are suffering as victims of occupation and militarism. These discriminative actions are turning Palestine into impoverished ghettos surrounded by exclusive Israeli settlements. The establishment of the illegal settlements and the construction of the Separation Wall on confiscated Palestinian land undermines the viability of a Palestinian state as well as peace and security in the entire region.

We call upon all Churches that remain silent, to break their silence and speak for reconciliation with justice in the Holy Land.

Therefore, we commit ourselves to the following principles as an alternative way:

We affirm that all people are created in the image of God. In turn they are called to honor the dignity of every human being and to respect their inalienable rights.

We affirm that Israelis and Palestinians are capable of living together within peace, justice and security.

We affirm that Palestinians are one people, both Muslim and Christian. We reject all attempts to subvert and fragment their unity.

We call upon all people to reject the narrow world view of Christian Zionism and other ideologies that privilege one people at the expense of others.

We are committed to non-violent resistance as the most effective means to end the illegal occupation in order to attain a just and lasting peace.

With urgency we warn that Christian Zionism and its alliances are justifying colonization, apartheid and empire-building.

God demands that justice be done. No enduring peace, security or reconciliation is possible without the foundation of justice. The demands of justice will not disappear. The struggle for justice must be pursued diligently and persistently but non-violently.

“What does the Lord require of you, to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.” (Micah 6:8)

This is where we take our stand. We stand for justice. We can do no other. Justice alone guarantees a peace that will lead to reconciliation with a life of security and prosperity for all the peoples of our Land. By standing on the side of justice, we open ourselves to the work of peace – and working for peace makes us children of God.

“God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation.” (2 Cor 5:19)

            Last one,

“At least one in four American Christians surveyed recently by Christianity Today magazine said that they believe it is their biblical responsibility to support the nation of Israel. This view is known as Christian Zionism. The Pew Research Center put the figure at 63 per cent among white evangelicals.”

I believe that about 80% of Americans consider themselves Christian, so if one in four is a Ziochristian, then that’s roughly 326,000,000 * .8 * .25 = 65 million Ziochristians, which, in my opinion, is a perversion of Christianity.

John….If, you are learning the New Test……just a suggestion., remember Matthew , Mark, Luke and John, are written to the Jew, ..Jesus came for the Jews , and these writings, when reading should be taken with that in mind.
Romans thur. Philemons is written to the Christians……which is the Dispensation of GRACE, which happened when the Jews, rejected Christ, and hung him on the cross.
LAW and GRACE is the big difference.
Acts…is a transition book going from Law to the Jew, to the Grace for ALL(gentile and Jew) Acts..breaks down the time periods…..After the Stoning of Stephen(a Jew)the separation begins concerning the setting aside of the jews which rejected Jesus (set aside for awhile), and the bringing in of the gentiles through grace, which is Paul’s message.

17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

Christian Zionists have shown varying degrees of enthusiasm for implementing six basic political convictions that arise from their ultra-literal and fundamentalist theology:

___*******The belief that the Jews remain God’s chosen people******(NOT IN THIS TIME PERIOD)….This is the PROBLEM …) leads Christian Zionists to seek to bless Israel in material ways. However, this also invariably results in the uncritical endorsement of and justification for Israel’s racist and apartheid policies, in the media, among politicians and through solidarity tours to Israel.

Natalie Portman, an example for Jews and Gentiles alike:

    https://original.antiwar.com/Reese_Erlich/2018/05/11/natalie-portman-boycotts-israeli-prize-right-wing-goes-ballistic/

“While studying at Harvard, she became a research assistant for right-wing Zionist Alan Dershowitz. She directed and starred in a feature film presenting the Jewish side of the 1948 war that established the Israeli state.

So Portman is an unlikely candidate for vilification by conservative Jews. Here’s what happened.

Last November officials of the Genesis award, often referred to as Israel’s Nobel, announced that Portman had won this year’s prize. The award is partially funded by the prime minister’s office. In response Portman said, “I am proud of my Israeli roots and Jewish heritage. They are crucial parts of who I am.”

Then in late April she refused to attend the Genesis award ceremony in Jerusalem. In an Instagram post, Portman wrote, “I chose not to attend because I did not want to appear as endorsing Benjamin Netanyahu, who was to be giving a speech at the ceremony.””

Starting Tuesday, May 15, “Killing Gaza” can be seen at Vimeo On Demand:

      https://vimeo.com/ondemand/killinggaza

“Cohen and Blumenthal, who is the author of the book “Goliath: Life and Loathing in Greater Israel,” one of the best accounts of modern Israel, began filming the documentary Aug. 15, 2014. Palestinian militias, armed with little more than light weapons, had just faced Israeli tanks, artillery, fighter jets, infantry units and missiles in a 51-day Israeli assault that left 2,314 Palestinians dead and 17,125 injured. Some 500,000 Palestinians were displaced and about 100,000 homes were destroyed or damaged. The 2014 assault, perhaps better described as a massacre, was one of eight massacres that Israel has carried out since 2004 against the 2 million Palestinians in Gaza, over half of whom are children. Israel, which refers to these periodic military assaults as “mowing the lawn,” seeks to make existence in Gaza so difficult that mere survival consumes most of the average Palestinian’s time, resources and energy.”

” “For 51 days, Israel bombarded Gaza with the full might of its artillery,” Blumenthal says. “According to the Israeli military’s estimates, 23,410 artillery shells and 2.9 million bullets were fired into Gaza during the war.”

That’s one and a half bullets for every man, woman and child in the Gaza Strip.”

“Israel intentionally targeted power plants, schools, medical clinics, apartment complexes, whole villages. Robert Piper, the United Nations Coordinator for Humanitarian Aid and Development Activities, said in 2017 that Gaza had “a long time ago” passed the “unlivability threshold.” Youth unemployment is at 60 percent. Suicide is epidemic. Traditional social structures and mores are fracturing, with divorce rising from 2 percent to 40 percent and girls and women increasingly being prostituted, something once seen only rarely in Gaza. Seventy percent of the 2 million Gazans survive on humanitarian aid packages of sugar, rice, milk and cooking oil. The U.N. estimates that 97 percent of Gaza’s water is contaminated. Israel’s destruction of Gaza’s sewage treatment plant means raw sewage is pumped into the sea, contaminating the beach, one of the very few respites for a trapped population. The Israelis did not even spare Gaza’s little zoo, slaughtering some 45 animals in the 2014 assault.”

It is worth noting that Trump was also a beneficiary of donations from the same Likudnik billionaires ‒ Sheldon Adelson, Bernard Marcus, and Paul Singer ‒ that have supported Netanyahu’s political empire.”
