Commentary from Harlan Ullman – Mon 31 Dec, 2018

Harlan Ullman’s final missive is worth a read and definitely worth an opinion.

rump’s incompetence puts U.S. in grave danger

As 2019 looms, for the United States, can the new year be any worse than the final weeks of 2018? Donald Trump promised to drain the Washington swamp. Instead, he has turned his administration and the White House into the mother of all swamps, where incompetence has become the common denominator and chaos the dominant descriptor.

The president’s base believes the president can do no wrong. Yet, the decisions to withdraw American forces from Syria and Afghanistan without a plan or answering the “what next” question are as flawed as depending on Saudi Arabia to fund reconstruction in Syria and Turkey to demolish the Islamic State. Worse, Bashar al-Assad, Russia and Iran are unchecked. And, regarding the Kurds, as the United States abandoned them in 1973 and 1991, the president is proving again Jack Kennedy’s aphorism that the only thing worse than being an enemy of the United States is being an ally or friend.

Stock markets have crashed. The dismissal of Defense Secretary Jim Mattis has deprived the president of whatever national security credibility he had left. The government shutdown over a mythical wall that can never be built on America’s southern border and paid for by Mexico further challenges the rationality of the White House to govern. And the number of senior vacancies in the executive branch, including an acting chief of staff and secretary of defense, is another example of the petulance at the western end of Pennsylvania Avenue that keeps good people from serving.

In a few days, Democrats will control the House of Representatives. A flurry of investigations will follow, many justified and many long overdue after House Republicans prevaricated to protect the president. Senate Republicans should be worried about the stability of the president given the above along with a jihad against his former defense secretary; a Twitter pronouncement of “Tariff Man” that precipitated the Wall Street sell-off; a government shutdown he originally embraced; and his threat to fire the chairman of the Federal Reserve. This was not helped by Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin’s ill-advised comment that the big U.S. banks were not at any credit risk, causing markets to assume the opposite.

RELATED Unpaid U.S. government workers advised to negotiate their bills
Meanwhile, the embattled president, as he told the Washington Post, trusts his “gut” instincts far more than expert advice, assuming he is listening to any of it. That instinct, embracing Presidents Xi Jingping of China, Vladimir Putin of Russia and Kim Jong Un of North Korea, now seems far from infallible. North Korea is reversing course on denuclearization — hardly a surprise given its past track record — and no one wins a trade war with China or anyone else.

An economic recession certainly seems more plausible. Brexit likewise threatens not only the U.K. but the special relationship with the United States, its closest ally. Both main British political parties are profoundly divided on how or whether to leave the EU. Options range from bad to worse. And special counsel Robert Mueller is a dagger and a potential howitzer pointed at the presidency.

The United States has been in grave danger before. The Civil War; two world wars and a cold one; a Great Depression; the Cuban missile and the October 1973 crises that raised the specter of nuclear war; defeat in Vietnam; the stock market crashes of 1987 and 2008; September 11th; and other catastrophes were overcome. Still an impending sense of doom seems eerily relevant today as the least experienced and most unthoughtful president to hold that office in modern times is in charge. What more damage will he do?

RELATED U.S., South Korea fail to reach deal to share costs for American troops
Or by some miracle is a self-correcting and invisible force in play? Perhaps the president in his self-imposed Christmas exile at the White House could have a massive conversion in which logic, truth, analysis and objectivity matter again. Sound arguments, for example, in drawing down from Syria and Afghanistan could be fashioned, provided none are based on gut instincts. Markets can be reassured. But threats to fire the chairman of the Fed are not the best reassurances. Reconciliation with Democrats is not out of the question. Ronald Reagan and Tip O’Neill made that happen more than three decades ago.

Having lived through five decades of these crises, including the Vietnam debacle, I hope America will endure this president’s disastrous actions. Hope, however, is a weak reed for basing policy and favorable outcomes. Yet how is a president convinced — who by all accounts, refuses to listen or read and takes advice from Fox News — to lead in a positive, constructive and reasoned way? The answer to that question may well determine if the swamp will be drained or whether it will become an even more treacherous, consuming and dangerous quagmire.

Mr Ullman….Have you lost the plot. You slag the Presedent off for pulling the troops out of Syria & Afghanistan , but you wrote a book , Why America Has Lost Every War It Starts.
Presedent Trump knows the US CAN NOT win the wars in those two countrys , so he wants to pull the troops out to spare the US the loss of any more American lives , & the loss of many billions of taxpayers $$$$ . He also knows that the days of the US , being the worlds biggest schoolyard bully are numbered . The man is standing alone in the White House , even some of his own staff are waiting to stab him in the back , along with the MSM , the DEMS , & The deep state .

They don’t call them the Forever Wars for nothing. The MIC would have it no other way.

That should be hundreds of billions MORE dollars. BUT on second thought it wouldn’t surprise me if that number winds up being TRILLIONS more, not hundreds of billions.

The American taxpayers need to put on their YELLOW VESTS, HIT THE STREETS AND RAISE HELL!

    Robert Moriarty says:

Ullman assumes without a shred of proof that Syria, Russia and Iran are somehow enemies of the United States and need to be “checked.”

Syria has never attacked the US, is no threat to the US and we have no vital or otherwise interests there. Russia and Iran are no threat to the US, we have not been attacked by either country and in theory they have the freedom to act in their own interests.

What legal basis is there for acts of war on the part of the US on any of the three countries? Has the UN passed some resolution that I somehow missed? Did Congress indicate the President has the right or obligation to attack any of the three countries on any basis? How on earth did we end up with troops in Syria which had an election probably a lot more free than did the US?

Oh, of course, Israel told us to attack them and anything Sheldon Adelson wants, Sheldon Adelson gets. Why do we keep having to fight wars for Israel? Let them fight their own wars.

Anyone who believes we should be in Syria needs their head examined. And anyone who believes we have not had our butts kicked in 17 years of constant war in Afghanistan understands neither logic nor warfare.

The US has lost every war it fought in one way or another since WW II and we didn’t “win” that war, the Russians killed 85% of the German soldiers who died.

Einstein said that the definition of insanity was doing the same thing again and again and expecting different results. Anyone who can’t see war with Russia/China being the ultimate results of this constant stupidity needs to read “Losing Military Supremacy: The Myopia of American Strategic Planning.”

Due to people believing the ignorance of this article and actually thinking this utter crap we probably will have a war against Russia/China and the US will learn what is like to suffer the devastation of total war.

    We will lose.

You could always think for yourself. What exactly have they done to indicate in any way that they are the enemy? Unlike Saudi Arabia, they have never bombed the Twin Towers, unlike Israel, they have never set up the Mossad to “record the event.” and unlike Israel they have never attacked a US Navy ship and done more damage than any attack in peacetime history.

If the US would pull their collective heads out of their asses, Iran would be the best ally we would have in the Middle East. I’ve been there and they are wonderful people.

And if I wanted to do nothing but listen to parrots, I’d buy one.

Glendalough…I spent many weekends there as a teenager camping with friends , around the lakes , drink beer & getting up to misgieve , Last year i took a couple of friends to Ireland we stayed at my sisters house in Naas Co Kildare , i drove them accross the Wicklow Mountains to visit Glendalough . they loved it , the lakes & the Round Tower. They spent hours going around the old cemetery looking at the old headstones , they could not believe how old most of them were.
Galway, around the time of your visit, would have taking over half a day to get to from Dublin…Today with the new M6 motorway it takes about two & a quater hours. The road system in Ireland today is first class , a pleasure to drive.
Boyers in Dublin is still there , pay another visit & buy another Dubliners record.
The houses on the Clontarf road are still there , but possably not Mrs Drury.
Did you ever go accross the wooden bridge to the island at Dollymount , just a few minutes walk from Mrs Drurys….I will end there , hope i brought back some happy memories of your visit to IRELAND.

I met a beautiful Danish girl on the bus to Glendalough and we stayed in the youth hostel there. I introduced frisbbee throwing to Ireland, Italy, Greece,Austria, Germany and France in 1973. The people there had never seen one and were curious about it. I lost my frisbee over a cliff in Glenalough playing catch with the Dane. It must still be there. Kirsten has sent me birthday and Christmas cards every year since 1973. I took the train from Dublin to Galway and back. Glad to hear that Boyer’s is still there, although Luke, Ronnie, and Barney of the Dubliners have died. We shall not hear their like again. Glad to know the B&Bs are still on the Clontarf Rd. I did go over a bridge to Bull Island one afternoon and enjoyed it. It was very near Mrs. Drury’s house. I had a great time in Ireland. Bet it has changed a lot since 1973.

Irish Tony is spot on. This Beta male has only provoking others to fight. My guess is he’s never even been in a fist fight. Sick war mongers who never serve with us in the sandbox. But love to send the American boys to die. I lost many brothers and sisters. Too many. Stop the wars. Prostate cancer is too good for him and his NeoCon mafia.

One person has revolted against the U.S. and in general this messy world. Her name is Ann Barnhardt. She has gone thru hell and back by choice. Once had a thriving business but after the debacle with M.F. Global said to hell with all this corrupt madness. She is super intelligent and can articulate things going on in the world like no other. Hope is not a strategy, but I still hope for a harmonious New Year for us all.

The first solution would be to get people to look past the Indians and acknowledge the Mound Builders. You know the race that buried their dead in mounds and were 8-14 feet tall, some were found with two sets of teeth. Some had six fingers and toes.
So you say aw that Snowbird, he’s another conspiracy theorist,he’s a wack job. Do yourself a favor order “The Encyclopedia of Ancient Giants in North America” Fritz Zimmerman.

17That the LORD spake unto me, saying, 18Thou art to pass over through Ar, the coast of Moab, this day: 19And when thou comest nigh over against the children of Ammon, distress them not, nor meddle with them: for I will not give thee of the land of the children of Ammon any possession; because I have given it unto the children of Lot for a possession. 20(That also was accounted a land of giants: giants dwelt therein in old time; and the Ammonites call them Zamzummims; 21A people great, and many, and tall, as the Anakims; but the LORD destroyed them before them; and they succeeded them, and dwelt in their stead: 22As he did to the children of Esau, which dwelt in Seir, when he destroyed the Horims from before them; and they succeeded them, and dwelt in their stead even unto this day: 23And the Avims which dwelt in Hazerim, even unto Azzah, the Caphtorims, which came forth out of Caphtor, destroyed them, and dwelt in their stead.)

1 Corinthians 13:9-12 King James Version (KJV)
9 For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.

10 But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.

11 When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.

12 For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.

So how does any of my rants pertain to the subject of Mr Harland’s latest contribution to the Korelin Economic Report?
Looking back at my notes to the last time I read something from Mr Harland on December 12th, I don’t think I would be a contributor to the Korelin Economic Report very much longer if I posted what my notes said.In fact I would have to believe the ice is getting pretty thin.
