I’m a Canadian who lived and worked in the US and Europe… Canada, has the WORST healthcare system by Far in all the Countries I have spent considerable time in. The level 1 Emergency average wait time for the 2 Hospital closest to me is 18.5 hours but that’s level 1 as in I have a knife stuck in my eye and I’ve been shot in the stomach 15 times. If you are not deemed to be urgent enough to rank 1, you can expect at the very least to spend 24 hours in the general waiting room and the a couple hours in the smaller rooms before you see a doctor. A old lady in 2017 died in the emergency room where people bring their sleeping bags and pillows to wait long hours. She had been dead for over 5 hours when someone noticed she wasn’t simply sleeping. Someone at the emergency called a friend who was working for a local News station and the hospitals called security and the cops to prevent any journalists from entering the hospital. This is typical in Canada. I was hospitalized in Las Vegas for 5 days and I thought I was in a 5 star hotel…
Socialism is great on paper but it really really is terrible in practice.

That’s not my description, DT. I’m not Canadian.
I’ve heard similar accounts from many others, though.
We have Canadian friends that have repeatedly had really long wait times in emergency rooms, to the point where when he was having pains and checked in waiting hours and hours, he started having a heart attack in the waiting room and only then was finally helped.
A few of their family have dual citizenship and make it a point to come to the US for major health treatments as they feel Canada’s healthcare system is so bad.
What was described in the piece above echoes stories folks have shared with me countless times, and they openly admit socialized medicine may provide more access but the quality of the institutions and doctors pales in comparison to the US system.
Bottom line: People fly into the United States from all over the world for access to care at certain health centers that specialize in heart health, or a certain surgery, or medical specialty because of the quality of care, knowledge of doctors, and cutting edge technology….. They don’t fly in to Canada for treatments like that, because socialized medicine lowers the bar across the board….
That is bs, in Calgary you can use the internet to check wait times to find the quickest wait time before you decide which hospital to go to.

For what is is worth, I had a stroke while we were in Canada and i refused to use either St Paul’s or Vancouver General because I knew that would probably be the case. Glad you are now okay!

Maybe bs b, but these wait times that you quoted are still pretty long. I went to the hospital in Bellingham, Wa. and I had zero wait time; I was tested almost immediately and then admitted very quick were I stayed three nights and had every test in the book done to me during that time.
I was pointing out that 18 1/2 hr wait time for emergency is unrealistic.
Now, knee replacement can take months, you have the option of private clinics tho.
To see a specialists of some kind can take weeks.
Thats a definite area for improvement, lots of people mention it.
Al, depending on whats up with you, you can be seen right away, and if your admitted , they will do all the tests required right away.

Big Al, I have been giving some thought to this whole debate over a wall or border and can’t help but think that too many people are overly exercised over boundaries in general. If one takes the time to think about it, everything has a boundary and a processes to regulate the fruition of an outcome.
If one wants to become a physician (or any other endeavor in life), he needs to follow a process and pass through certain regulations and preparations to become a physician. All organizations have their parameters which dictate who and how one may participate, but who gets to regulate those parameters and processes? Those who make up the organization.
Even God himself has distinct rules and regulations as well as processes that determine what level of existence we will have in the next life after departing mortality. In the parable of the rich man and Lazarus, given by Jesus, found in Luke 16, we see that after mortality, the rich man’s level of existence was determined by how he lived his life or how well he followed the rules and regulations. In this parable, a gulf or division (or wall) was placed between the rich man and Lazarus, a gulf the rich man could not cross over, because he did not comply with what was necessary to do so.
There was a boundary or line of demarcation that separated one from the other, based on the parameters of that organization.
This being the case, why is it such a foreign concept to have a boundary or wall that separates one organization from another? Those on one side of a wall or boundary wishing to join the organization on the other side of that wall, must comply with the parameters and processes to do so.
When some decide to cross the wall or boundary outside of these parameters and processes, why do they think they are justified in doing so, or why do they think the rules do not apply to them?
I have compassion, as do many others, over the plight some in the world find themselves in, but the organization called America has certain parameters and processes by which those seeking entrance must comply with. Such is the law currently in place. If those of us in the organization wish to amend those parameters, we are free to do so, but there is a distinct process that must be followed to do so. An orderly process is necessary to avoid confusion and disorder.
Even God has order in his realm. He determines the manner by which others gain entrance. Should we not do likewise, since he sets the patterns in so many areas we are to follow?
Every citizen of this nation has a right to express his opinion on the matter, but there is an orderly process by which such situations are to be determined.
It is my hope that after the voice of the people has been heard, the matter debated and discussed (in a civil manner hopefully) that a determination will be made by the majority and finally that the populace will acquiesce to the outcome. No person will ever get everything they want, but civil society can only exist if we agree to accept the outcome of the orderly and legal process.
