Some Levels To Watch For Silver, Gold, and GDX

Cory
July 24, 2019

Jordan Roy-Byrne, Founder of the Daily Gold shares the levels he is watching for the precious metals and GDX. As gold has run out of steam a little bit, silver and GDX have picked up the pace. This very well could be confirming the breakout in gold but nothing moves in a straight line… like silver has over the past three weeks.

Solid price action over the last two months out of #Yukon #Developer and near-term #Producer – $AXU $AXR Alexco Resources

    #Chart http://schrts.co/mSkiIIat

$Silver stocks have been on fire recently with only a small move in the underlying metal prices.

    >> Where are these things going if Silver gets back up in the $18-$20 level?

      Jul 24, 2019 24:32 PM

Here are the 3 month returns on some of the Silver Producers.

(SCZ) Santacruz Silver – up 200%
(EXN) Excellon Resources – up 85.51%
(USA) Americas Silver – up 70.40%
(FR) First Majestic – up 66.79%
(IPT) Impact Silver – up 66.67%
(ASM) Avino Silver & Gold – up 51.43%
(SVM) Silvercorp Metals – up 37.50%
(CDE) Coeur Mining – up 32.51%
(PAAS) Pan American Silver – up 27.42%
(FVI) Fortuna Silver – up 26.01%
      (HOC.L) Hochschild Mining – up 19.54%
(EDR) Endeavour Silver – up 15.46%

Not too shabby for the Silver wingnuts, considering what the average annual returns are for retirement accounts positioned in the general equity markets.

Measuring from their respective recent lows makes more sense to me. Doing so puts the top performer (SCZ) at 233% rather than 200% and the bottom performer (EDR) at 52% rather than 15.5% while IPT jumps from 66% to 108%.

            Jul 24, 2019 24:47 PM

Yeah, that is good data too, and as you mentioned, some stocks will have done better than displayed above if measured from low to high.

The reality is that few traders will hit the exact low to purchase every single stock, but it is likely a number of investors would have taken a punt during the lows in miners in April/May so the 3 month chart default with Stockcharts seemed like a fair place to size up the sector in general, but isn’t perfect as it will vary from stock to stock as to where they were at any particular point to present.

The main point was to take a look back for 3 months and show how well some of these Silver producers did over a short time period, with just a small increase in the metals price. If Silver gets back up in the $18-$20 range things will get very interesting in this space.

I also posted some year-to-date charts a few days ago on the KER, and some updates on ceo.ca eariler today, since many investors likely got into positions during tax loss at the end of 2018 for 2019. For those that bought at year end and held most of the year, these are respectable gains.

            https://ceo.ca/index?6d21846f246e

            Jul 24, 2019 24:42 PM

You’re right that few will hit the exact low but it’s fairly easy to buy near it. Each stock has its own cycle so I would never ignore each stock’s chart when buying. In other words, I wouldn’t buy a handful of juniors at the same time just because the sector in general is bottoming. So the only way to get a meaningful objective comparison is to measure from lows rather than a single date. Those who ignore charts and buy a diversified portfolio at once might disagree with me.

            Jul 24, 2019 24:46 PM

            Example:
EDR’s 15% 3 month gain objectively has no value to me and here’s why:

            https://stockcharts.com/h-sc/ui?s=EDR.TO&p=W&yr=1&mn=9&dy=0&id=p62606191901&a=678315798

            Jul 24, 2019 24:04 PM

Agreed Matthew. When I’m personally investing I look at each company on it’s own merits and do my best using TA to pick an entry near the intermediate low.

Yes, there are generalist investors that will bring in money from the sidelines into a basket of stocks around the same time into a sector – be it Gold/Silver, or Uranium, or Cryptos, or Pot Stocks. For many investors they position at the end of the year or in January, or when they feel a significant change has happened.

There are likely many institutions along with retail investors that saw Silver start moving and jumped into a handful of companies at that time, and I see people discussing things like this in other chat-rooms where they picked up these 3-5 stocks in a sector today (regardless of the TA in many cases because they just want exposure to a sector).

I do agree with you though that measuring from a low to a high is the best measure for comparison, but it takes way longer, and I wanted to just post a 3 month and year-to-date chart on a number of companies very fast using the Perf charts for the overall trend and sentiment change in the Silver stocks.

Apparently it’s time to get cashed up if you’re a silver miner…..

Can’t say that I blame them and actually like to see that companies waited until this recent climb in share price before raising, as it minimizes the dilution, but allows more work to get done to progress their projects further.

            Jul 24, 2019 24:58 PM

Here’s a big raise from Mako Mining (formerly 2 different companies – Marlin Gold and Golden Reign. In addtion Marlin spun out Sailfish Royalties that had a streaming deal on one property, that renegotiated it to an Net Smelter Royalty durin the merger, and picked up some of Marlin’s other royalties.).

What is interesting about this transaction is now Wexford Capital took the majority stake. The share count got diluted down, but then again they also raised $27 Million which is a ton of cash and likely gets them well on the way to moving their 2nd mine, San Albino, into production. They have the 1 mine in Mexico already in production.

I didn’t see any other press release regarding a capitial raise on the website other than this one today with Cantor Fitzgerald Canada Corporation where they did some at $.85 and some at $.99.

When else did they do a share offering at close to the bottom?

    July 24, 2019 – Ryan T.

ust When You Thought CannTrust’s Situation Couldn’t Get Worse, The Story Takes Another Unfortunate Turn

“In a story that The Globe and Mail broke yesterday, new damning evidence has surfaced that indicates CannTrust’s (TSX: TRST) (NYSE: CTST) current CEO and Chairman were aware of the cannabis growing in unlicensed rooms and may have even counselled staff on how to respond to Health Canada regulators.”

“Leaked internal emails show that CannTrust CEO Peter Aceto and Chairman Eric Paul were made aware of the clear Health Canada violations that were taking place in the company’s unlicensed rooms at its Pelham, Ontario greenhouse.”
