The mortality rate is NOT calculable…..That is why I used a different term, I called a kill rate.
Your truth in media guy is mis-leading. BECAUSE of AGE dependency.
If you are old or have hypertension covid-19 is a heck of a lot more lethal.

          covid kid,
You claim “we are being played”
So presumably you know the long term effects.
Can you tell me, what will be the long-term effect of the HIV fragment included repotedly in the genomic structure of covid-19, because I do not know.

            Mar 21, 2020 21:25 AM

After it’s all said and done I predict the responses of the world’s gooberments will kill far more than the virus.

And I guarantee you politicians and bureaucrats will grab much more power and control over the population and they will never give it up.

            Mar 21, 2020 21:28 AM

And for the rest, I suggest you ask Jerry or Matthew.

I believe we will be saved by the use of the chloroquine – antiviral/antibiotic drug combo, and by this city/state lockdown/ self-isolation has bought enough time to save hundreds of thousands of deaths.

On the other hand, I believe, the trillion dollar hand-out is ill-thought out, purely political foolishness.

Thanks CVS, I too would like very much to know what Covid’s opinion is based on. No is not the time spread negative opinions. That is for sure.

        Mar 21, 2020 21:27 AM

Thanks for bringing this up again. It is truly almost impossible, at this point, to determine the mortality rate.

      Mar 21, 2020 21:27 AM

Okay Covid, Big Al needs to be aware as does everyone. But, it is time to stay positive

        Mar 21, 2020 21:58 AM

It is hard to know what’s real. There’s a lot of conflicting information. Also, it’s still early on so the information is incomplete. But I do know that governments always use crises to expand their control and when the crises are over they never relinquish that control.

          Mar 21, 2020 21:53 AM

          OF course Covid, I agree

            Mar 21, 2020 21:24 AM

Big Al usually asks for back-up information for statements associated with knowledge.
I most often cite my sources if I can.
While I do give opinions, most of my posts are not my opinions, but information.
How you interpret the information I give is your choice, not mine.
I am first and foremost a distributor of knowledge…..have been for many decades.

            Mar 21, 2020 21:34 AM

There’s a lot of conflicting information. I hear one thing from Martenson, Townsend and Molyneux and the opposite from Swann and others who are very credible. At this point, it appears to me that the medical impact in the US is not going to be anything like the scenario Martenson is saying is going to play out.

I think there is a much higher chance the reaction to this will implode the economy. I am already seeing signs of that where I live and it is very early on.

And I guarantee you the politicians are using this crisis as a power grab. The criminal Graham is already using this as an excuse to force ISPs to relinquish their encryption keys to the goooberment.

And the control over our privacy, freedom and money that these b@stard politicians take from us WILL NEVER BE GIVEN BACK! COUNT ON IT!!!

You can’t compare a country like Israel, Singapore, or Malaysia, to the way people are reacting with Covid 19 to The United States. In a smaller country it is much easier to control the way people think and react to critical situations. I suspect Canada will have a better outcome than The US because of our size and the fact that we have universal health care which is much more suited to handling a crisis such as this. DT

        Mar 21, 2020 21:58 AM

When I talk about the size of our country I am of course referring to the fact that Canada has I/10 the population of The US. DT

            I saw that CK.
Does he mention a big reason the CV is so deadly is that it is more contagious than a seasonal flu?

            Death rate

Initial data shows that coronavirus is deadlier. In the U.S., seasonal flu kills 1 in a thousand people (0.1%) who get sick from it — the death toll last season was more than 34,000. Worldwide, an estimated 300,000 to 650,000 people die from flu each year.

By contrast, COVID-19 is currently estimated to kill at least 10 people per thousand infected (1%). “It’s about ten times more lethal than the seasonal flu,” said Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Disease, in congressional testimony on March 11.

I think until there is a vaccine this covid is pretty serious.

The death rate soars to 14.8% in those 80 and older; among those ages 70 to 79, the COVID-19 death rate in China seems to be about 8%; it’s 3.6% for those ages 60 to 69; 1.3% for 50 to 59; 0.4% for the age group 40 to 49; and just 0.2% for people ages 10 to 39. No deaths in children under 9 have been reported.

Some of those #s are big, the flu on average killing fewer than covid could be misleading.

            Mar 21, 2020 21:25 AM

There’s a lot more going on that we are not told. Such as this

“Many of these deaths in Italy are likely due to tuberculosis among immigrants. The demographic data shows a significant portion of the deaths in Italy were in the 18-44 year-age group and were more likely immigrants with tuberculosis, with COVID-19 possibly being a co-infection.”

            https://www.lewrockwell.com/2020/03/no_author/leaders-of-western-nations-misled-over-quarantine-social-distancing/

            Mar 21, 2020 21:34 AM

The Covid-19 death percentages do not include mild cases but the seasonal flu numbers do so they are comparing apple viruses to orange viruses, so to speak. If you include the mild cases in the season flu death rates the seasonal flu is more deadly. The same for confirmed vs estimated case comparisons. That’s what Swann says and he’s quoting the WHO’s own numbers.

So it would seem, as usual, we are being played. If so, the damage from the reactions of our rulers is going to be far more damaging than from the virus.

            Mar 21, 2020 21:32 AM

“If you include the mild cases in the season flu death rates the seasonal flu is more deadly.”

That should be include the mild cases in the COVID-19 death rates. Sorry.

I have to tell you we are beginning to see what could be a break down in getting the necessities of life.

Today at 5:30 AM I went to a grocery store open 24hrs…well, not anymore…they open at 6:30 for seniors and 8AM for everyone else and close at 7PM. So I go to WalMart and now they don’t open until 7AM (used to be open 24hrs), so I go to another grocery store that opens at 6. Got there at 5:50 and people were queued up.

Even though they had all night to stock the shelves they were out of numerous items and very low on many other items. AND they are rationing, only allowing you to buy a quantity of one for certain items. As I came home I drove past the first store and there was a line about 50 yards long.

Where I live there is an unusually high number of grocery stores per capita. I have never seen these stores reduce their hours and people standing in lines to get in.

And mind you, this is only two days after the beginning of our state’s “shelter in place” order (really a lock down order).

As the supply chain gets squeezed further imagine what it’s going to look like in a couple of weeks. It could be like the Soviet Union or worse.

In my opinion Politico is a left-wing publication.
To ask a professor of literature about the consequences of the covid-19 disease is about as valid and informative as asking a professor whose expertise is in under-water basket-weaving. I would suggest no one knows. We can give a range of possibilities, but not much more at this time. It is clearly, in this day and age, a world problem. Not so much a city, state or even country problem.
China had a chance to eradicate the disease from the human population, but they blew it.
Unless we develop a cure or vaccine, this is a highly contagious disease which will do much damage.
At the worst end of the scale of possibilities, is that the viruses will remain in the community forever, just like the influenza viruses. It will continually mutate.
It has the potential, without a cure/vaccine, of permanently changing the structure of the elderly population of the world; killing more men than women and shortening life expectancy.
On the politically advantageous end of possibilities it partly relieves a significant problem, pervasive in socialist Western society, of under-funding of pensions and for care of those elderly who instead of needing pensions or care will die.
(Incidentally, with this imposed self-isolation policy, another advantage is that we will also have fewer influenza infections and deaths this year.)
I pray for a cure, but would suggest, in the interim, everybody should try to boost their normal immunity…..sleep, vitamin C, D, Zinc, maintaining a positive attitude, etc.

        Mar 22, 2020 22:37 PM

CFS, good point on Politico and the professor. And good advice on staying healthy.

Plague, Cholera, Small Pox, Polio, Typhus, TB, all impacted how we live, but humanity either adjusted, found a cure, or overcame, and thrived.

I know too many that are feeling fearful, depressed and disconnected – I hope the treatment (isolation) is not worse than the disease.

I have confidence the treatment options will be coming very soon. The US administration is making very good moves. But in the end, it is each of us that will learn the lesson – there are no guarantees in life.

793 more deaths in Italy, over 6,500 new cases of COVID-19 reported.

      cfs
      Mar 21, 2020 21:06 PM

I have given the statistics about covid-19 in Italy and have received responses like:
Italy has lots of old people that’s why.
Or Italy has lots of tuberculosis, that’s why..
Or well Italians hug and kiss a lot, that’s why…
Doubtless these are contributing factors, but the numbers did not compute in my brain, so I kept on digging…..
Did you know there were more than 300K legally registered Chinese citizens lining in Italy and many more illegals.
Did you know Italy recently entered into a new economic partnership with China called “One belt, One road” program.
Or how about the fact that China has revitalized many northern Italian ports in order to transport goods more efficiently to the rest of Europe. (Note the outbreak started in Northern Italy; no coincidence there.)

      FRom Tracy Beanz:
Thirty years ago, Italy saw the beginnings of what would become a serious issue with illegal immigration. What was surprising, was that the immigrants couldn’t just walk over a border to enter the country, they had to flock from China. It began with Italians hiring the Chinese off the books at cheap wages to work making garments in towns and villages renowned for their craftmanship, and morphed into Italians seeing the Chinese learn how to do it faster and cheaper; often times watching as their family owned businesses were shuttered because they were outbid. The Chinese took over the Italian craft and made it their own. What didn’t change was the coveted “Made in Italy” label.

      From NYT: https://www.nytimes.com/2010/09/13/world/europe/13prato.html
Over the years, Italy learned the difficult lesson that it could no longer compete with China on price. And so, its business class dreamed, Italy would sell quality, not quantity. For centuries, this walled medieval city just outside of Florence has produced some of the world’s finest fabrics, becoming a powerhouse for “Made in Italy” chic.
      And then, China came here.
Chinese laborers, first a few immigrants, then tens of thousands, began settling in Prato in the late 1980s. They transformed the textile hub into a low-end garment manufacturing capital, enriching many, stoking resentment and prompting recent crackdowns that in turn have brought cries of bigotry and hypocrisy.

The city is now home to the largest concentration of Chinese in Europe; some legal, many more not. Here in the heart of Tuscany, Chinese laborers work round the clock in some 3,200 businesses making low-end clothes, shoes and accessories, often with materials imported from China, for sale at midprice and low-end retailers worldwide.

The trend continued as whole villages in Italy became Chinese villages, with the Chinese displacing the Italians who lived there, creating their own neighborhoods, and pushing out decades of Italian family owned business. They weren’t known for following the rules. It caused much local consternation; the Italians were forced to pay their taxes and follow the employment guidelines, while the Chinese seemed to have built flourishing enterprises by skirting the rules, treating their people poorly, and engaging in rich human smuggling operations, to boot. There was little accountability for the Chinese, and much for the native Italians.
Outside of the typical problems one would see with such an influx of immigrants from a far-off land, were also other, more scandalous ones.
In 2017, the Bank of China agreed to pay 600,000 euro fine to settle a money laundering case involving its Milan branch, court documents showed. The Florence court hearing the case gave four employees of the Milan branch of China’s fourth biggest bank a suspended two-year prison sentence for failing to report illicit money transfers. Florence prosecutors leading the so-called “River of Money” investigation alleged that more than 4.5 billion euros ($4.78 billion) was smuggled to China from Italy between 2006 and 2010 by Chinese people living mainly in Florence and nearby Prato. About half of the money was sent via BOC, the prosecutors said. The court also ordered BOC to pay back 980,000 euros which it said it had earned through the illegal operations. According to the prosecutors, the proceeds sent to China came from a series of illegal activities, including counterfeiting, embezzlement, exploitation of illegal labour and tax evasion. Bank of China said in a statement it had not committed any crime and was not admitting guilt by agreeing to pay the fine, which was a way of closing the case and saving time.
The wheel of corruption kept spinning, and the Italian people became more and more angry. Sometimes, this led to violence. It also led to a nationwide sentiment that something needed to change, and the populist uprising we have been seeing across the globe also began to take a foothold in Italy.
      From 2018:
At a time when Europe is filled with anti-immigrant rhetoric, political extremists have pointed to the demographic shifts in Prato as proof that Italy is under siege. In February, Patrizio La Pietra, a right-wing senator, told a Prato newspaper that the city needed to confront “Chinese economic illegality,” and that the underground economy had “brought the district to its knees, eliminated thousands of jobs, and exposed countless families to hunger.” Such assertions have been effective: in Italy’s recent national elections, Tuscany, which since the end of the Second World War had consistently supported leftist parties, gave twice as many votes to right-wing and populist parties as it did to those on the left. Giovanni Donzelli, a member of the quasi-Fascist Fratelli d’Italia party, who last month was elected a national representative, told me, “The Chinese have their own restaurants and their own banks—even their own police force. You damage the economy twice. Once, because you compete unfairly with the other businesses in the area, and the second time because the money doesn’t go back into the Tuscan economic fabric.”
In March of 2019, Italy entered into a new agreement with China, part of its “one belt, one road” initiative, a sweeping economic agreement with the country that saw the port of Triesta in northern Italy “revitalized” and managed by The PRC.
The project makes enormous infrastructure investments to move Chinese goods and resources. Italy became the first of the Group of 7 nations that once dominated the global economy to take part in China’s “One Belt One Road” throughout Asia, Africa and Europe.
The Trump administration, which tried and failed to stop the deal, focused in the days leading up to Mr. Xi’s visit on blocking any Italian use of 5G wireless networks developed by the Chinese electronics giant Huawei, which Washington warned could be used by Beijing to spy on communications networks.
Italy, which is saddled with crushing debt, hopes to lift its lagging economy by exporting goods to China and inviting more Chinese investment.
But opponents of the project in the Trump administration and in the European Union worry that Italy has turned itself into a Trojan Horse, allowing China’s economic — and potentially military and political — expansion to reach into the heart of Europe.
The detailed reporting on this slow takeover is expansive, and we could continue here for many paragraphs, but let us fast forward to early 2020. As China withheld information about the seriousness and spread of Wuhan corona-virus, many of these immigrants were returning- and arriving – from China. Once news of the virus became mainstream and China felt increasing backlash over the handling of the crisis, they turned to one of their major economic hubs for some help.
It wasn’t chance. It wasn’t age. It wasn’t overall health, and it wasn’t the good-hearted nature of the Italian people that caused the virus to ravage their nation. It was a leadership who are now under the thumb of the Chinese government.
On February 1, 2020, the mayor of Florence initiated something called “Hug a Chinese” day.

It’s a virus, get over it. It has a much lower death rate than SARS, H1N1 and MERS – all three passed without the media freak-out we are seeing.

It has been 6 weeks since it likely entered the US, we have far fewer cases than Italy which started at the same time, and far fewer cases than China had in its first 6 weeks since identification.

Treatments from FDA approved drugs are showing very positive results. At risk folks need to head warnings, stay clear of other folks for a while, be smart, stay out of the hospitals unless very ill. The panic will be worse than the real impact when all said and done.

This will pass, and sooner than most think.

      Mar 21, 2020 21:41 PM

“This will pass, and sooner than most think.”

Not before the economy gets severely damaged if people can’t get back to work.

My sister and her husband in Palo Alto just found out that they have tested positive for Wu flu. They are 78 and live in a retirement home where many retired Stanford profs live. The Stanford hospital is nearby.

      Mar 21, 2020 21:44 PM

What’s their prognosis? What symptoms do they have? What per-existing conditions do they have? Godspeed to them and you.

      Mar 22, 2020 22:40 PM

God Bless Bonzo, with prayers and hope for your family.

    Mar 21, 2020 21:02 PM

So far they have mild symptoms and require no treatment besides rest. My sister has Parkinson’s too.

      Mar 21, 2020 21:46 PM

Well, that is good news. Hopefully that will be all they have. Based on what Swann is saying and citing WHO’s own numbers it’s possible the severity of this virus may be less than the seasonal flu but it’s very early on.

        Mar 21, 2020 21:48 PM

It’s very possible this virus may be more contagious but less severe than the seasonal flu, but we won’t know that for a couple of months and also won’t know the long term effects of it for years.

          Mar 21, 2020 21:50 PM

Also, it’s possible there may now be multiple strains, some more virulent than others.

Somehow dif from all the other puppets.

      Neat somebody knows it tho.

      Mar 22, 2020 22:39 AM

Like all high-profile media including social media, google, the AMA, the FDA, etc, etc, Trump is a tool of the communist globalists that took over a long time ago. That’s been clear from the start.

Had a very interesting experience today.

Hadn’t ridden my bike all week so I took a long ride. Went up into the park and found a picnic table and parked. I was a few tables away from a group of women, obviously nurses. They were talking about a patient. They said they had run out of test kits and the ICU was full.

Well, that sure caught my attention. I got up and was going to engage them in conversation but when they realized I over heard them they abruptly changed the topic so I got on my bike and rode off.

Now, I don’t know if this is from the Corona virus, the seasonal flu or something else. And I know the medical facilities here are inadequate as this is the only trauma center in the area and we had a hospital close in the last couple of years.

Before that, I went to that first grocery store I went to earlier today. The parking lot was no more full than on a typical Saturday at that time but there was still a line. As I mentioned earlier I have never seen this in my life and I am currently living in an area that has an unusually large number of grocery stores and other retail outlets for its population size.

      Mar 21, 2020 21:04 PM

I’m guessing that for whatever reason the ICU is full it ain’t COVID-19 because as far as I know the county has not announced a single COVID-19 case.
