Welcome!

US cities start opening up and the US escalates tensions with China

Cory
May 21, 2020

Chris Temple joins me for a look ahead to the economic restart that is starting in the US. We saw some jobless claims data again this week but the recent data has not had an impact on the market. We outline what to watching as we move through this restart.

US and China tensions are in the news again as the US is moving forward with restrictions on Chinese companies listing in the US and limiting US pension funds from investing in Chinese companies. More details are still to come.

Couldn’t be more right. Popular American name “” Smith””.

            American’s asleep.

            Adam Smith Quotes:

            ON THE DIVISION OF LABOURā€¦
“It is the great multiplication of the productions of all the different arts, in consequence of the division of labour, which occasions, in a well-governed society, that universal opulence which extends itself to the lowest ranks of the people.”
            – The Wealth Of Nations, Book I, Chapter I, p. 22, para. 10.

“It is the maxim of every prudent master of a family, never to attempt to make at home what it will cost him more to make than to buy…What is prudence in the conduct of every private family, can scarce be folly in that of a great kingdom.”
            – The Wealth Of Nations, Book IV Chapter II, pp. 456-7, paras. 11-12.

            ā€¦AND TRADE SPECIALISATION
“By means of glasses, hotbeds, and hotwalls, very good grapes can be raised in Scotland, and very good wine too can be made of them at about thirty times the expense for which at least equally good can be brought from foreign countries. Would it be a reasonable law to prohibit the importation of all foreign wines, merely to encourage the making of claret and burgundy in Scotland?”
            – The Wealth Of Nations, Book IV, Chapter II, p. 458, para. 15.

            ON COMPETITIONā€¦
“In general, if any branch of trade, or any division of labour, be advantageous to the public, the freer and more general the competition, it will always be the more so.”
            – The Wealth Of Nations, Book II, Chapter II, p.329, para. 106.

“Consumption is the sole end and purpose of all production; and the interest of the producer ought to be attended to, only so far as it may be necessary for promoting that of the consumer.”
            – The Wealth Of Nations, Book IV Chapter VIII, v. ii, p. 660, para. 49.

The name””Smith”” was referred to as a popular American last name.

However, if you want to bring Adam Smith into the scheme of things.

Where is Adam Smith today ????

            May 21, 2020 21:47 PM

            Smith’s words are forgotten today.

Maybe that was that “invisible hand” he was talking about. šŸ˜‰

            May 21, 2020 21:54 PM

If it is American “Smith” wisdom we are looking for – here is Will Smith.

            https://www.fearlessmotivation.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/will-smith-quotes-main-FB.jpg

            May 21, 2020 21:56 PM

Very true, but the invisible hand isn’t what you were talking about.

Mentioning Adam Smith’s name was about as dead as you’re rebuttal.

Where is Adam Smith though right now ???

            May 21, 2020 21:03 PM

Josey Wales – calm down man. I was joking about the invisible hand (not the smiley face), and understand the invisible hand in a free market is different than how we were using it, and I realize he is Scottish. I was just running with words from Sleeping, to Asleep, to Smith….

As I mentioned his words and economic common sense are forgotten in current times.

            Relax…

            May 21, 2020 21:03 PM

            not = note šŸ™‚

            May 21, 2020 21:21 PM

Excelsior, calm down ??? We’re discussing the reality of America today. I posted a message and then you reply like jokingly there’s a fight breaking out at home Depot with four people. I don’t take it as a joke because our lives are going to get very serious now and this is going to end a military conflict exchange between the superpowers. So you can keep believing whatever fabricated life that you want to live but that life is not going to continue as you believe. Apparently, you are one of those that keep believing in this American dream that has caused the world a nightmare with debt and everything. You don’t get it.

We are in a major epic financial collapse far exceeding the Great depression when this is over and this looks like a very apocalyptic event that’s coming down very soon.

I’m not in your club with a joking around because it’s not anything right now to be complacent about whatsoever. Your being very critical of the very seriousness of the hour we face and you’re only try to twist things around making claims that you’re just joking now. Maybe it’s both. However, nothing had anything to do with Adam Smith so I don’t know where that came from. Adam Smith is dead and so is your rebuttal so let’s just get over it.

            May 21, 2020 21:26 PM

So, I take that as you are not going to calm down…. šŸ˜‰

We are mostly in agreement Josey, and we are all well aware of the state of things at present, but shouting at the top of your lungs about those here is really preaching to the choir. We get it.

“Seriously, don’t take yourself so seriously.”

            May 21, 2020 21:29 PM
            May 21, 2020 21:36 PM

Excelsior, listen…. I’m not doing all the shouting until you posted that long long comment regarding Adam Smith that had nothing to do with anything.

I’m just substantiating the case that this nation has been in serious trouble and it is in serious trouble and if we agree on that let’s just leave it there.

We’ve been civil so there’s no problem but we shouldn’t just start accusing people of something I really didn’t do. I’m not yelling from rooftops right now my posts are very short.

I’m trying to be respectful I’m just posting links and that’s it and doesn’t take up a lot of space.

Enjoy the rest of your day and we are all learning here and I’m not trading anything so that’s something that you guys are doing I’m not interfering with that at all.

Let’s get over this triviality that’s all it is it’s ridiculous šŸ˜Ž

            May 21, 2020 21:49 PM

Josey – I posted the Adam Smith quotes because we were talking about last names with Smith and this is an economic blog, so it seemed quite relevant. If you can’t see that, then your anger blinds you from the obvious tie in.

You’ve been posting every day pictures of aborted fetuses, biblical verses, people on posters with horns and piercing, and posting daily about the apocalypse. Geez, I almost miss Heavy Hitter.

I’m fine with being civil, but as far as accusing people of something they didn’t do, how about this knee-slapper from you about me (when you couldn’t be more off-base).

” So you can keep believing whatever fabricated life that you want to live but that life is not going to continue as you believe. Apparently, you are one of those that keep believing in this American dream that has caused the world a nightmare with debt and everything. You donā€™t get it.”
            — Josey Wales (telling tall tales)

So gimme a break on you being a victim, and ponder the concept of bearing false witness against another.

            Peace out.

            May 21, 2020 21:01 PM

Excelsior, that’s really despicable not being compassionate ā€“ caring, with no empathy at all towards the aborted babies and fetuses and they’re all being cut up body parts being sold children’s minds being corrupted you sound like you don’t have a care in the world then go ahead and go about your business… let’s see what happens …let’s see how this all turns out for you. I’m not in your club at all, your club is the club of deplorables they don’t care about anything but themselves. America’s so sick that you don’t understand how deranged and twisted you people really are. That’s why this nation is going to burn. An immoral cesspool of filth.

            May 21, 2020 21:02 PM

If that doesn’t bring you solace, then (speaking of Smith) I’d recommend enjoying a few bottles of Samuel Smith’s Nut Brown Ale.

            May 21, 2020 21:08 PM

Josey, thanks again for bearing false witness and the personal attacks.

Do you really think your aborted fetuses posts are helping or adding value to an economic forum? If so you are quite delusional.

As for this rubbish you just spewed:

“Iā€™m not in your club at all, your club is the club of deplorables they donā€™t care about anything but themselves. Americaā€™s so sick that you donā€™t understand how deranged and twisted you people really are. Thatā€™s why this nation is going to burn. An immoral cesspool of filth.”
            — Josey Wales (telling tall tales)

All I can say is “wow” dude – the Nut Brown Ale was definitely the right recommendation for you. Good grief!

      May 21, 2020 21:19 PM

Excelsior, you bet I meant every word of it too because you stand in the throes of darkness. You just don’t understand that the darkness is going to get a lot worse. You won’t be able to cope. The chaos that is coming to this nation major bloodshed so if you want to remain in that darkness that’s up to you. The next thing to go is our military and if you don’t understand what that means, then you really are deceived about everything… you just don’t get it.

        May 21, 2020 21:24 PM

Ha! Sure Josey Wales… you got it all figured out. That was very Christian of you.

I’m done with your exhausting apocalypse rants for today, but it was heart warming.

        Peace be with you.

          May 21, 2020 21:35 PM

Excelsior, you just admit it earlier in the comments above that you agreed with everything pretty much that our nation is in serious trouble. Now you’re doing a backflip. We’re in a full blown socialist Nation now with universal basic income. Even without a war and that’s very unlikely but with all our debt a real socialist society dwarfs into a real apocalyptic type collapse. Let’s just say this, it’s far from what we have right now it’s at the bottom of the barrel type living.

All the signposts are there for this happen but to ignore them would be to say I’m going to drive my car now without a steering wheel on it and I’ll do fine just doesn’t make sense everything is in place for a very bad catastrophic outcome.

I apologize if you were offended by some of the seriousness of the hour, but it is, what it is and I can’t change it.

Let’s just leave it there and peace to you too sorry for the aggression towards each other in this debate but the reality is this nation is going to collapse into a terrible situation there’s no question about it.

There’s nothing unchristian-like in representing the truth because the lies don’t help anyone they lose their lives and their souls if they’re not informed of the truth they’re are so many examples of this. Please don’t be offended and all the best sincerely I mean that.

            May 21, 2020 21:02 PM

Unfortunately for people that like the city they will be war zones. The cities of today will become rubble. The landscape will be completely changed. Everyday life will be chaotic without a war. The American dream has been terminated and we’re on a downward spiral to this way of life there’s no way out of it.

Critical Price Level Could Prompt A Big Move After Holiday

    by @TheTechnicalTraders – Chris Vermeulen – 21 May 2020

“As technical traders and researchers, weā€™ve been paying very close attention to the GREEN ARC Fibonacci resistance level on the SPY as a key level for the US stock market and any hope of a continued upside price rally. The SPY has traded near this level for the past three weeks and appears to be attempting a bit of an upside breakout right now. Yet, we understand a long holiday weekend is upon us in the US, Memorial Day, and after a big upside GAP on Monday, the US stock market has stalled over the past few days.”

“Our researchers believe this GREEN ARC is still acting as critical price resistance and believe the SPY may sell off into the end of the week resulting in a failed attempt to breach this key resistance level. If this happens, the failed attempt to break this resistance could prompt a change in price trend and initiate a new downside price trend. If this resistance level is broken by the end of this week, then we have a pretty solid indicator that continued bullish price trending may continue.”

“Overall, the US stock market has continued to trade within this no manā€™s land recently. There have been some pretty decent upside price moves in certain sectors over the past few weeks. Precious metals, certain travel/leisure stocks, and, of course, technology and services stocks. Yet, we continue to warn our friends and followers to be very aware that the US stock market is far from immune to more downside price activity. A deep selloff like we experienced will very often react with a ā€œrecovery moveā€ ā€“ a dead cat bounce type of move. While the NQ has been a big mover, these other sectors suggest we may be nearing a tipping point and we urge technical traders to stay very aware of the risks as we head into this long holiday weekend.”

I don’t understand why the Chinese companies listed in the US have not crashed.

When you buy a share in them you do not own an actual share in them – you own a piece of paper which is effectively an IOU from some Chinese holding company in the Caymans or similar. In a blink of an eye those ‘stocks’ can be worthless.

Why are people still buying those stocks and not selling them?

      May 21, 2020 21:41 AM

I have a few emerging market funds with exposure to companies in Asia – China, Taiwan, South Korea, Vietnam, but they are counterbalanced with companies in Europe so overall my exposure to the area is rather limited.

      ________________________________________

As for the miners my only exposure to China is the Canadian run company Silvercorp (SVM) because they are the lowest cost Silver producer on the planet, and have been generating good revenues & cash flows for the last few years when most most peer Silver producers have been struggling.

In addition, they are now diversifying into Latin America with with a 29% stake in NUAG in Bolivia, that is turning out to be quite a sizeable project and with Pan American Silver upping their stake to 15% earlier this week. Lastly, it looks like they’ll soon win the bidding war for Guyana Goldfieds (GUY) in [you guessed it] Guyana.

Looks to me we are really close to moving above the all time high for gold in american dollars.
I bet its “to the moon” this time.
I always detested that expression, but it might be appropriate this time.

Im almost nervous holding the cash I have.

      May 21, 2020 21:39 PM

I’m more nervous about the mutual funds I hold in my retirement accounts. I’m liquidating some of them tomorrow, to move more to cash – to have more direct control over the funds and some dry powder to deploy, and rolling some funds into other IRAs that are more defensive. The rest I’ll leave as is in the Wallstreet casino to see where this goes.

    May 22, 2020 22:28 AM

Excelsior, I really value your vast knowledge and updates on the silver and gold miners. I would like to ask if you are invested in or are tracking some promising micro juniors (less than 20 Million market cap) with great potential ? I am invested in all the Junior Mining Junky picks, which are mostly higher market cap juniors. I also have invested in Brixton, Novo, Japan Gold, Irving, Arizona Silver, Galway Metals and Southern Arc. I would appreciate all your recommendations and advice.
