There are some pathogens that the body can build long last immunity to – polio & etc and there are other that either are constantly changing, here I’m talking about the flu, and others where the body can build some immunity for a short time but over a time period that immunity fades. This is probably the category that Covid-19 falls into. So, folks that are exposed to it and recover but will not have a long term immunity to the virus. From the posts I’m seeing the immunity to Covid-19 fades over the course of several months. Therefore we won’t reach what is called “herd immunity” where most of the populace is immune so the virus can’t spread. Now folks are trying to come up with new types of vaccines that will give people long term immunity but we aren’t there yet.
Trumps attempts to force the economy and schools to open will fail and cost many lives. I’ll predict right now schools will open then shut in a matter of a month. Let’s consider a simple thing – the school bus. It and the driver start early in the morning and pick up kids along a route then drop them off at a school. The bus and driver then goes and does another route to drop kids at another school. This cycle can occur 3 or 4 times a morning and in reverse happens again in the afternoon. 1 child walks into the bus and contaminates it with Covid19. He/she goes on to school and spreads it there to other students and teachers, many of which are well over 50 years old. The bus moves to the next route and now the bus contaminates other children and in a few days they are spreaders too. So, within a week or so there are Covid-19 outbreaks at all the schools that bus goes to. Opening schools back up will be a fundamental disaster.
Now I know that children don’t appear to be “super spreaders” but there is zero evidence that says that children can’t spread the virus. In our bus example 100 to 200 or more kids a day will touch or be touched by that bus – if 5% or 10% of the kids can spread the virus then the process is off and running.

By the way, I’ve talked to folks that are thinking about this and it will take huge amounts of money to decontaminate these buses multiple of times a day. It simply ain’t gonna happen –

However, from the data, it looks like the lethality of covid-19 might be decreasing due to mutations as well.
Hard to tell if the numbers are due to better hospital treatment or viral mutation, though.
I think we can look at Europe and China and see that with experience hospitals got better treating patients and it continues to improve in the US. Once they started addressing the inflammation issue outcomes improved alot. To track this and all issues about Covid-19 see:

I know that the virus is mutating but not the “important” parts – they appear to be highly conserved. There are parts of the genome of these viruses that are not as important to the fitness of the virus so they can change/evolve. That is just how it works – an organism duplicates a set of genes and and that duplicate goes off and sees if it can work better/be more fit than the ones it came from. (Sorry my classes in Quantitative Genetics and Evolution are coming into this discussion.) Covid-19 may indeed evolve a new genotype that is less lethal than the initial one, after all killing off your host ain’t a great strategy for any type of organism, but I wouldn’t plan on it!

I find it interesting that both sides argue about schools staying closed or opening by not using hard data.
Trump uses a FACT that very few children of school age die from covid-19.
The unions argue that teachers are older, and THEREFORE (?) school opening represents a DANGER THAT THEY WILL CATCH COVID-19.
Both arguments, in theory, have merit, BUT….
There are over a hundred countries out there……some kept schools open, some did not.
Why not use the ACTUAL STATISTICAL EXPERIENCE of the rest of the world?
I could write a couple of pages comparing the virus spread in different countries, but the bottom line is that opening schools, does not appear the increase the spread of Covid-19.
There are 2 relevent comments:
1. The reason for this is children’s natural immunity seems to kill the virus quickly, so they never have a large viral load…..thus are ineffective at transmitting the virus.
2. The number of students to teacher ratio is so large that a few teachers getting sick do not show up statistically. But each child has a parent which is older, so their sickness should show up statistically, and it does not.
