A look into next year for the USD and Silver

Cory
December 24, 2020

A lot of guests on the show have stated that they are bullish on Silver heading into 2021 (you’ll here more on this on this weekend’s show). I have Jordan Roy-Byrne, Founder and Editor of The Daily Gold share his outlook for silver and the USD.

I hope you all have a very Merry Christmas and Holiday Season!

For the first time in almost 13 years, HL priced in gold has closed above its 600,5 moving average envelope and at the same time, delivered the first weekly MACD buy signal since May:

I liked HL early on and continue to like it with a rather large position—also CDE which is performing admirably.

I hadn’t owned it for many years but its balance sheet improved a lot this year and I’ve always liked they way it moves (compared to something like PAAS, for example, which I recently sold). I also like CDE but sold it recently to buy more HL and some juniors. I have enough exposure to Mexico and CDE’s Palmarejo mine has about half of the company’s employees. Still, I might own it again, especially short term.

I’ve got a large position in the portfolio for CDE Coeur as well Doc, and feel it moves with a lot of torque for a larger company, and similar to Hecla, or SSR, or Pan American, has good Gold production in tandem with with the Silver production.

It will be good to see Coeur put their Silvertip mine (in British Columbia) back into production this next year, and to see them expand operations at Rochester. About 2/3 of their production is coming from the US now (Nevada, Alaska, South Dakota), and only 1/3 of their production is from Mexico.

I’m also interested to see how they progress things at Sterling, which they acquired when they took out a prior explorer/developer I owned – Northern Empire.

Any problem with that Mexico-based production could easily result in a huge hit to the share price so it’s still too much exposure for me considering the Mexican projects I already have. Of course, I do not expect a problem from Mexico and do expect CDE to deliver big gains in the months straight ahead. It has kicked the you-know-what out of PAAS and SSRM since March and will continue to do so. (CDE tripled vs SSRM and went up 150% vs PAAS since the March low.)
It is currently on a daily MACD sell signal vs HL so my recent actions have worked out well so far…

            Both good points Matthew.

Yes, if they had challenges at any of their mines (especially their Mexican production), after already having to reboot Silvertip, then it would be a big impediment, but I also don’t expect that, unless it is a Mexican covid-19 related shut down or something along those lines. I anticipate that when Silvertip does get back online later in the year that it will be a nice contributor once again to production, and lift the stock.

As to the CDE:HL chart, I see you point on the MACD sell indicator, which is typically a lagging indicator, but may persist for the short to medium term, and does favor a rotation out of Coeur and into Hecla. I may slightly reduce down my CDE and initiate a HL position based on their pair trade, and then rotate it back over when the tide turns. Both are solid precious metals companies and I’m comfortable owning either. Thanks for the chart and perspectives on the current set up.

            Dec 26, 2020 26:28 AM

Something I did not expect is that HL has been in a big uptrend versus CDE for the last 23 years and is worth 20+ times more CDE now than in mid-1997 (it peaked at over 35x one year ago). As of the 3rd quarter, HL:CDE is now on a quarterly MACD buy signal. The last three such buys resulted in HL rising several hundred percent versus CDE. This is the fourth in the last 20 years.

            Dec 26, 2020 26:16 PM

Well, I may sell 50-60% of my CDE then and rotate that over to HL if that is the case. Again, both are solid companies, and Hecla has been around 125 years+ so I’m sure it will be an excellent place to be in 2021 and 2022.

I was secretly hoping to acquire Hecla shares by them acquiring (DV) Dolly Varden over the next year or so, but am fine buying HL outright, and I’ve owned it a few times over the last decade.

HL already made a run at DV back in 2016, but it was blocked by a poison pill financing 2 teams back. Dolly’s projects are adjacent to and also inside of Hecla’s Kinskuch property in Alice Arm, BC at the tip of the Golden Triangle, so I can see why Hecla would want to nab Dolly Varden. Currently Hecla owns 11% of of DV, and it would not surprise me to see them up their stake in DV after they incorporate their 2020 and 2021 drilling data into an updated resource estimate.

Check out pages 8 & 9 on the DV Corp. Pres.

            Dec 26, 2020 26:28 PM

            That’s interesting about DV.
If you’re going to switch some CDE to HL, I think you can probably do it on your terms since the two have been so similar in recent years. One can blow away the other on any given day.

            Dec 26, 2020 26:31 PM

“Death Cross” on the daily chart but it looks like HL wants to rise vs CDE anyway:
            https://stockcharts.com/h-sc/ui?s=HL%3ACDE&p=D&yr=1&mn=0&dy=0&id=p47959198486
(Obviously nothing wrong with holding both when a powerful intermediate term advance is beginning.)

            Dec 26, 2020 26:35 PM

Thanks for those charts. Yeah, CDE may have a little more torque in the short term, but HL looks like the better place to be medium to longer term, but nothing wrong with own and trading around positions in both. I may just start a HL position with some other funds on the side, and then if there is a PM push in (Jan – early March) in the typical Q1 run, then I may use that opportunity to reduce CDE and rotate more over to HL.

These are wild times, and markets have been all over the place; but if we see the kind of bump normally seen in Jan & Feb and early March, then it should be a good time in the mining stock. In that kind of a run higher then companies with Silver exposure should lead the charge, and that would be good for the whole sector. Looking forward to 2021. Cheers!

Jerry..That Timothy was a wise man, Red wine is known to be good for your health.

Some sugar is OK. After all there is sugar in fruits, I think you meant to say something like no added sugar or deserts that are high in sugar. Skip the wine though.

            Dec 25, 2020 25:55 PM

            Not the same kind…….processed sugar…is a no no…

Kevin, since Irish and I have been here on the ker for over 13 yrs.,,sometimes, we just skip over some of the details……
            Thanks for the follow up.

            Dec 26, 2020 26:04 PM

I can sure believe that it happens even on here just like most sites.

          Dec 24, 2020 24:01 PM

Actually that was Paul that said that and not Timothy. Red wine (fermented wine) is not really good for your health. It is actually the natural ingredients that are good for you.

            Dec 25, 2020 25:00 PM

Kevin you are correct , on Paul writing Timothy…..Many people think that Timothy wrote Timothy…..not a problem …good they even know who Timothy was….
I have heard people that have been preaching, …get that one confused…

            Dec 25, 2020 25:54 PM

            Matthew,

It is sad that you did not know a simple fact from the Bible. You probably know very little.

“but use a little wine for thy stomach’s sake”

The emphasis being”little”. And little does not mean one glass. Even one alcoholic drink causes you to be drunk (under the influence) which is sin. Paul was probably telling Timothy to add some wine (probably fermented wine) to his water. At any rate, using a small amount for legitimate medicinal purposes is allowed.

          Dec 26, 2020 26:37 PM

          Very true!

          Dec 27, 2020 27:54 PM

Making sure you do not get ….legalistic…..we are not under the LAW…

            Dec 28, 2020 28:08 AM

Legalistic? What does legalism have to do with anything that I said about drinking wine and becoming drunk which is a sin? Legalism has to do with achieving salvation through works instead of receiving salvation through the grace of God.

            https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legalism_(theology)

Maybe you were just being sarcastic?

            Dec 28, 2020 28:23 PM

Well were you being sarcastic or was it that you did not know what legalism really meant like most people that I have to correct.

            Dec 28, 2020 28:42 PM

What does it mean to be legalistic? According to Merrian-Webster:
1 : an advocate or adherent of moral legalism. 2 : one that views things from a legal standpoint especially : one that places primary emphasis on legal principles or on the formal structure of governmental institutions.

Jerry’s casual use of the word was just fine and it is odd that you’re still trolling for attention 15 hours later.

What does it mean when a person is pedantic? Again, according to Merriam-Webster:
Pedantic is an insulting word used to describe someone who annoys others by correcting small errors, caring too much about minor details, or emphasizing their own expertise especially in some narrow or boring subject matter.

            Dec 28, 2020 28:25 PM

We are referring to legalism as used in Christianity. Not they way you are using it. So no, Jerry’s use of the word was not just fine. You should stick to your area of expertise.

            Dec 28, 2020 28:55 PM

“We?” You speak for yourself. YOU are referring to legalism as used in Christianity. How do you know what “law” Jerry was referring to?
Common decency would have you ask him what he meant rather than assume he meant what you think he did. Jerry is good at keeping things light most of the time so the odds are good that you’re making a big deal out of nothing.

            Dec 28, 2020 28:45 PM

Please stop. The discussion clearly had to do with Christianity in which a Bible verse was quoted about wine. I made a truthful statement about drunkenness being sin. Jerry stated that I should make sure that I do not get “legalistic” (which I was not since legalism has to do with salvation) and then he stated that we are not UNDER THE LAW. I know what Jerry was referring to when he said that the WE are not under the LAW. Any Christian would know what he meant. Are you a Christian Matthew?

            Dec 31, 2020 31:58 AM

No reply from either one. Not surprising.
