With regard to food shortages……
Food production , interalia, is dependent on weather, agricultural inputs: type of crops, area of land utilized, fertizers, etc.
We cannot control the weather, and favorable weather is not predicted.
The land being used is not under U.S. control, and reduced wheat and barley production from Ukraine WILL effect supply. (20% under-supply projected.)
You may not like GMO crops, but enhanced production via GMO has enabled much greater food production and reduced famine.
Fertilizer: Here we have 2 problems:
The Nitrogen part of NPK fertilization is via ammonia produced by Natural Gas…..shortage of supply AND increased price of Natgas causing a problem.
The Phosphorus part of NPK fertilization is providied by hard rock mining of phosphates; typically in ex-Soviet satellite countries. Supply is reduced by U.S. trade embargo with Russia.
“Experts” are projecting about a 20% shortfall in fertilizer supply. Availability WILL BE more of a problem than cost.
(I am also hearing of a significant reduction of rice this year….Not an area within my knowledge base)

With regards to food production, again it is a double problem.
If there were no food production decrease, there would still be the problem of price increase due to production cost increase. The cost of production increase is initially projected at about 10% in the first year.
The reduced production effect will last several years. There is almost no supply reserve in feed grains (as opposed to often as much as a 2-year stored supply historically)
There will be a change in breeding for poultry and cattle if feed grains are unavailable, which will take time to change back)
We also have a serious fish stock problem as Asian countries are fishing to oblivion large fish)

Cargill feed mill fire (in Jan) 4:30 a.m.
Penobscot McCrum potato plant (in ME in Mar) 2:30 a.m.
Maricopa Food Pantry (50,000 lbs food lost) started shortly AFTER employees left for the day
Azure Standard HQ described as “Overnight”
ConAgra in Waterloo IA (March) 1:30 a.m.
A warehouse for frozen foods fire in San Antonio (late December) was 9:30 Sunday night
Clearly Clean products (Makers of food trays for commercial food packaging) in March was 4:30 a.m. on a Saturday.
Raw Farm Creamery in Fresno (in Jan) was 3:00 a.m.
Pepsi factory in NJ (March) was 7:00p.m.
ConAgra Jackson TN (March) was 9:00 pm
Wisconsin River Meats (Feb) is described as “overnight”
Taylor Farms (Salinas) was after 7 pm, not sure if they work a second shift there.
Rio Fresh Onion/produce packaging – “evening” (after 6:00 p.m.)
Winston Salem fertilizer plant (Feb) was appx 6:30 p.m.
US Foods delivery truck warehouse in Denver was “mid-day” on a Saturday
Louis Dreyfus soy processing plant (Feb) appx 8 p.m.
Other (non US or non-food) recent fires/explosions at “off” hours:
-Voestalpine Nortrak (makers of specialty rail road tracks) 1 week ago 4:18 a.m.
-Kuwang Food Indsutry warehouse (wheat products) in Chiayi County Taiwan – 3:03 a.m.
-Pingo Doce supermarket warehouse on Madeira – 8:00 pm
-Carrefour Logistics (Supermarket chain) in Taoyuan (Taiwan) – their second warehouse fire in a week- appx 7am, and the previous week as in Taiwa’s Lujhu district described as “late Thursday night”
