With momentum driving markets here’s what to consider

News out of Theresa May in the UK, a continued move down for the US dollar, and the bigger picture of the markets is on tap today with Chris Temple. With momentum driving the markets moves can go further than most expect but as long as you understand why this happens there is good money to be made. Let’s see if this momentum can further pop some assets and drop others.

The first poll – yeah, polls are always right huh – following PM May’s announcement this morning has her with a 21 point lead.

The call for a UK election almost 5 years before she had to is a dangerous play.
The people of the UK do not elect a prime minister; they elect members of parliament and the MPs elect the prime minister.
May was an anti-Brexit person, and Brexit was forced upon her by voters.
If there is any suspicion by the voters that this is an attempt to destroy brexit, she will cease to be Prime minister.
Other than the fact that the Labour Party and the Social Democrats/Liberal Parties are in disarray, this could be a really stupid move by May.

Looking at the EU rules, once Paragraph 50 was invoked, it appears that any outcome other than Exit is impossible. Exit will occur on the second anniversary of invoking the rule, regardless of whether or not any exit agreement has been reached and there does not appear any availability, according to the rules, for a change of mind. However, we all know the bureaucracy of the EU has bent rules before on a whim, and ignored votes against acceptance of the Constitution, when inconvenient.

On reflection, it appears that May is calling for an election in order to make it less probable that the House of Lords will impede the exit.
The only other way to circumvent the Lords problem would be to pack more pro-Brexit Lords into the House of Lords, and she does not want to do that.

The political parties in England are:
    Conservative,
    Labour,
    Liberal Democrats,
    UK independence (UKIP)
    Green
    plus the Scottish Indendence Party.

The Scottish Independence Party hold the majority of seats from Scotland.
Green and UKIP have only 1 MP each.
Historically both Labour and Lib-Dems have had majorities, but in recent years have had less support.
Labour is more heavily supported in the North of England.

The UK Parliament would have to be dissilved by about May 4th, in order for the election to take place…….this would be done by a vote in Parliament tomorrow.

Gold at $1292 ….. When are the miners going to get on this higher metals price?

$8 from $1300 and its like a funeral parlor out there…..

    Apr 18, 2017 18:50 PM

With the sizeable drop in the dollar today gold should have been at or over $1300. Thus the lack of upside in gold mining shares.

22000 contract dumped this morning might be a thought………. ootb

All in all, Gold held up better than one would expect with all those contracts dumped in the morning. I saw a few investors on other blogs quite worried about it earlier on in the day but Gold just channeled sideways in the same trading range.

Good thoughts today from Chris Temple on not worrying about hitting the exact top or bottom, but instead to just get most of the trend and momentum of the move correct. Bingo.
