Ukraine lost over 70 thousand men defending it, which was a Russian objective, reduce Ukrainian military.
Objective achieved.
Russia lost 20 thousand. 10k were prisoners offfered release for service.

Putin ALWAYS felt that the area of land given to Ukraine was excessive, and that areas such as most of of Donbass should have remained part of Russia. (Indeed, most of the residents there also agreed.)
Putin NEVER originally wanted to take all of Ukraine. Look at the Minsk agreements.
Neither did Putin believe it would be a proxy war with NATO, rather than Ukraine.
Pushing back NATO so there would be a buffer country between Russia and NATO member countries had been a wish by Putin, which seemed reasonable to me. The U.S. and Europe had given the buffer zone lip service, but, in practice, had NEVER acted as if they accepted it…… always creeping forward.
What is most concerning to me is that the U.S. non-nuclear arsenal is now greatly diminished.
So much so that China’s invasion and taking of Taiwan is now guaranteed.
