Newsmax reports on the cost of the president’s trips to Hawaii

Big Al
January 5, 2013

I realize that the president of the United States works long and probably hard hours. I realize that a certain amount of time off is needed. I also realize that a bit of prudence needs to be exercised when it comes to the cost of this “de-briefing”.

For example, Kathy and I are headed over to Winthrop, Washington for a bit of “de-briefing” and cross country skiing. My cost for this five day session will be about $700.

Obama’s Family Vacations to Cost Taxpayers More Than $20 Million

Friday, 04 Jan 2013 01:12 PM

By Newsmax Wires

President Barack Obama’s four vacations to Hawaii since becoming president may cost taxpayers “in excess of $20 million, and possibly much, much more,’’ the White House Dossier reports.

A breakdown by the Hawaii Reporter shows his trips in 2009, 2010, and 2011 cost about $4 million, much of it for Air Force One. But that doesn’t include costs like flying in advance teams and separate flights Michelle Obama twice took.

When Obama returned from Hawaii to work on the fiscal cliff deal last week and then jetted back to Honolulu, the second roundtrip flight added about $3.24 million to the tab, bringing the 2012-2013 vacation to over $7 million, the Reporter said.

Urgent: Will Raising Taxes Help or Hurt America?

“If we assume the estimates are probably quite low, then it’s likely to the bill for the combined vacations is more than $20 million,’’ said the Dossier’s Keith Koffler.

“Given that much of the cost involves transporting the First Family and its retinue, the Obamas could have saved taxpayers millions by doing what the vast majority of Americans do: taking either one trip a year, or none.’’

Koffler said while some argued the president is justified in returning to Hawaii because that is where he was born and grew up, “how many of us get to go visit our roots for a two week vacation every year?

“The Obamas probably also feel they must go to Hawaii because they are creatures of habit . . . But their allegiance to routine is costing the taxpayers – including those in the middle classObama claims to care so much about – millions of dollars.’’

well,…..lets see,,,,we have 4 more years …….that should amount to another $100 mill
by the time he is done…..I SAY, JUST PRINT IT……

You know, In the Box what I can’t understand is why the president doesn’t try to set an example for the rest of us.

He is a pretty popular guy and he and his family could really ingratiate themselves among Americans (and the world) if they took the stance that they were “with us” and, in the case of this particular subject i.e. vacations, they headed to a cabin in the Catskills of something.

Maybe I am being simplistic, but I think that is what this country needs.

        “popular guy”………with who?….
“with us”…..there is no way he is with us…I still want to see his birthcerticate….to see if he is with us..ootb

The Secret Service and the rest of the entourage are being paid to be in Hawaii in January. That beats being in DC or on a ranch in Crawford Texas.

      Jan 06, 2013 06:37 AM

I mean that is the point Dennis, with all of W’s faults when he and Laura took off they simply headed back to their place in Texas.

That is what we need here. The president would be setting a great example if he, Michelle and the girls went and vegged back at their home in Chicago.

Seems like pretty simple logic to me.

        Jan 06, 2013 06:51 AM

Thats the problem with your thinking…it TOO logical and common sensical!

    Jan 05, 2013 05:16 AM

You guys are just haters. The poor fellow had to cut his trip short to fix the Fiscal Cliff. Now there’s dedication.

      Jan 05, 2013 05:02 AM

LORE……I understand obama came back, because he forgot his Christmas ham, and needed it for the pitchin Hawaiian pig roast…..

      Jan 06, 2013 06:38 AM

Sounds like a conversation that I had last night, except last night my friend was serious!

Oh well, we do live in a free country!

Al a few weeks back you stated that Yale told you he was the big buyer of XRC…well the insider reports have come out and he purchased 13,600 shares or $15,000 of stock. I think it is very disingenuous to claim he’s a big buyer when the truth is $15…. So which one of you lacks ethics and exaggerated?

    Very poor standards.

I have reported your and Yales comments to the BCSC and OSC as misleading statements.

      Jan 06, 2013 06:40 AM

I did not check the authenticity of Yale’s comments as I do not think he is a liar.

I will definitely look into this immediatelly.

Thanks for your looking into this.

Look, it’s all part of the big decline, when society allows their politicians to change rules and The Constitution means nothing anymore, they have forgotten what once made them great, nothing new in the annals of time but if you see it coming all you can do is protect your own, this may sound callous but in the scheme of History it means very little. Human nature only learns lessons by experiencing pain instead of wisdom. DT

      Jan 06, 2013 06:43 AM

Not a callous statement at all in my opinion, Machine Gun!

    Jan 05, 2013 05:44 PM

Besides humans are not the chosen species just look at the Dinosaurs who ruled the earth for 65 million years, they didn’t realize they would die, we do?

We will be the first species on earth that will have engineered their own decline. DT

      Jan 05, 2013 05:01 PM

Artificial intelligence that humans have created will replace us, we are nothing special or new just a passing phase. DT

      Jan 06, 2013 06:44 AM

      Interesting viewpoint, Machine Gun!

The over use of air force one, is expensive. previous repubs did the same however. the security costs are driven by things like gabby giffords attemped assination, attemps on regan, and ford. i do think Bidden could be given the nuke football for a week or 2 and the pres. could fly out there on a fighter jet. let the wifes and keds fly commercial. wont happen tho i guess. best wishes for New Year health and prosperity to all S

      Jan 05, 2013 05:22 PM

      Scotty,
You cannot assign all of BHO’s spendthrift ways to historical events.
There is no logistical reason why Barry and Michele habitually take separate planes to Martha’ Vineyard an hour and a half apart. It is as if Barry likes to do whatever he wants even if it is only to demonstrate to all that he can.

        Jan 06, 2013 06:47 AM

And that, Dennis M, “only to demonstrate to all that he can”, is an interesting point!. I would hope that is not the case, but in our crazy society who knows!

        Big Al

      Jan 06, 2013 06:45 AM

      Thanks Scotty,

I am curious, what did you think of my response regarding the president setting an example?

      Big Al

    Jan 05, 2013 05:14 PM

    Beam us up Scotty! DT

    Jan 05, 2013 05:18 PM

scotty…..remember when Peolosi, had to have airforce two shuttle her back and forth, when she was speaker of the house….I think that was out of line then , as well as the extra shuttling of MR. o……….besides, how many vactions does, every one else get on a salary of $400,000….these perks are way out of line with the office…..afterall, he is a public servant,,,,,,,but, he is self serving…….and a little greedy at that…..lol..ootb.

      Jan 06, 2013 06:49 AM

Sad commentary, In the Box. (Sorry, with your intellect, I simply can’t call you “The Short”)

      Big Al

    Jan 05, 2013 05:26 PM

Jerry, government is the prime driver of fear, the public fears government greed but there is no accountability for their actions so Mr. Market will decide their fate, it will happen! DT

      Jan 05, 2013 05:33 PM

ditto…..DT…….Mr. Market better hurry, while there is still something left…..or there will be nothing to account for…..shorty….ootb….

        Jan 06, 2013 06:29 AM

The government is taking away the free market. There is no market, just manipulation. The big four banks and the Fed are the market nowadays.

          Jan 06, 2013 06:31 AM

Mr. Market is the big four’s manipulation of derivatives, Bernake and Federal bailouts.

            Jan 06, 2013 06:50 AM

Couple of interesting points you make, Donald.

With $200 trillion + in debt and liabilities nobody blinks an eye.
It will go on until it is no longer tolerated by the financiers.

    Jan 06, 2013 06:26 AM

Other people’s money. It’s as simple as that. If he had to pay for his own vacations, he would go to Camp David, fly commercial or stay on the East Coast. He is no different than other Presidents past and future unless we limit their power to spend other people’s money. His base is in Chicago. Does it cost less to vacation there?

      Jan 06, 2013 06:30 AM

Yes, he mr. o……should be quite proud to be a Kenyan from Chicago…..gangland is thrieving and thieving in the bankrupt land of cheecagooo…..

    Hi Big Al,
I was taken back by the comment made by Jason in reporting you to the BCSC.
My goodness you are well respected by your colleagues and the people on this site.
I would suggest that Jason should be banned from this site.

      Jan 06, 2013 06:25 PM

I would second that……we do not need any trouble makers…..they have plenty of other sites to go to…….beside…..he needs to do his own homework, like the rest of us…..ootb…

    Jan 06, 2013 06:41 AM

Ya cant ban Jason for having a ding bat opinion about somthing, if that were the case I would have been gone long ago. besides its relitive, $15k to me in 1 stock IS big, to others its small, depends how ya look at it. Jason is obviously a multi billionaire.

      Jan 06, 2013 06:29 PM

benb……you are not a trouble makers……we have enough trouble makers outside, we certainly do not need for Al, to be involved in a game of nonsense…..ootb….

      Jan 06, 2013 06:22 PM

I would have to say the same thing benb. $15K would be considered substantial by almost any court or agency in regards to an individual, even if they are the CEO. In fact, Yale was being quite up-front mentioning the purchase at all. He could simply have let people rummage through insider reporting to find out about it. Jason, I agree that $15,000 doesn’t buy what it used to, but the presumption on what “big buyer” implied was yours to make. I think it’s important to add, that any position you’d take in XRC should not be influenced much, if at all, based on the CEO’s rate of accumulation. It’s nice to see insiders buying like crazy, but it their buyer or selling isn’t an issue for a securities commission. It’s your issue.

Intelectual Intependent Journalism would include how much the Texas Cowboys Ranch visits Cost the Taxpayer between 2000 and 2008! Sorry this is “Republican Propaganda Distribution” in his cheapest Form.

    Jan 06, 2013 06:57 PM

    Gentlemen,

I appreciate your support regarding my comments re: Exeter. I am who I am, Jason is who he is, and Yale is who he is. Jason is probably down in his investment and, if that is the case, it is what it is. He is probably angry and looking for someone to blame. Oh well, investing is not a guaranteed profitable game is it?

Mike, regarding the cost of the Texas cowboys Ranch visits, I will definitely research those costs.

I still feel that Me. Obama should be setting an example and not trying to prove something. That is what I believe I would do anyway!

In 2008 and on into 2009 I lost a lot of dough.Truth be told,I lost all my dough, save 8,000 dollars in CDNX equities.I hade a million shares of penny stocks that were a buck just a few months before-small producers and some highly touted speculative junior miners.
I owed 5,000 in debts so I was left with 3,000 dollars to my name.
Jason, you know what I did? I took the loss on all the paper I held.
Then I moved them into other similar junior producers, mainly.
Over the next four years I made all my money back and then 50% profits on top.
The trick was to take a loss and roll what remained into similar to better opportunities.
I was angry at myself and I should have been.Inexperience and not being pro-active.
Not sure what your beef is,but if I can go from sleeping on the floor in a one room rental without a kitchen to being somewhat wealthy again,so can you.Good luck.

      Jan 07, 2013 07:52 AM

great followup…Matt….”inexperience”….and “pro-active”……kind of says it all…lol ootb

    Jason,just read your post again.
The point is I could have blamed a lot of people for me losing my money-companies that did not perform as they stated, banks that have zillions of derivatives and were propped up,I could have made a long list and just kept complaining. It would not have helped me in the least bit.
You are responsible for everything you do.When you accept that you will find no room to blame others as your mistakes will hopefully take precedence.
