I don’t know how often you enter the country from abroad, but recently it is grinding to a standstill. If you travel through a major airport (I use either SFO or ORD mostly, but occasionally JFK or LAX) then you can expect to stand in line for about 2 hours shuffling forward in serpentine lines. The U.S. has the WORST, bar none, entry system into any country in the whole world.

        Feb 04, 2017 04:28 AM

Looks like they are going to make entering the U.S. from Mexico a little more difficult.
Once they bring entering from Canada to a standstill they wont have far to go to shut the whole place down.

I wonder if anyone recalls Caseys? book about shutting the U.S. down?
        Sealing it completely off.
He warned long ago, get out while ya can.

Its a step by step thing, its not the first time this has been done, they have had practice.

But what the heck, its still the best country on earth. lol

I honestly don’t know what causes long delays for entry through US passport control.
I could guess. That guess would be associated with political correctness.
In their effort to treat everyone “equally and fairly” there has been lost any attempt to profile and use efficient techniques. e.g. profiling
In the last few years I have traveled extensively in the Middle East including Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Emirates, Dubai, Jordan, Tunisia, Greece, Albania, Macedonia, Serbia.
Sometimes by sea, sometimes by air, sometimes by bus and none of them have had delays or waits as long as the US.
I usually have on a (not huge)backpack when I tour around and I do get stopped occasionally by police or military who ask to search it (even when walking around a city), but have never had more than a minute or two delay for that.
I’ve lost count of the number of times I have entered Israel or Egypt, probably in the high teens. But I have encountered negligible delays in either, at the Mediterranean side or the Red Sea end.

AJ, I appreciate you sending this information.

It is, obviously, very lengthy and I will read it carefully today.

After reading it, I will come back with another reply.

I will say at the outset, that I am again getting more and more concerned about the entire situation in our country and the fallout that is coming from both sides.

I would bet that most folks on this blog share my concern.

        Feb 04, 2017 04:36 AM

        Al,

Be careful, the comments by Stephen Legomsky, appear to be an attempt to deliberately twist the intent of the proposed “uniform screening standard and procedure” comment.

It appears to me that he would like to have the executive order litigated in the court of public opinion to stir up concerns and dissent to the order issued by president Trump.

It’s entirely reasonable to apply a “uniform screening standard and procedure” by traveler classification as it is undoubtedly intended to do.

In other words green card holders, asylum seekers, travelers on work related permits and vacation travelers can and should be screened differently.

We need to support and applaud the intend of the executive order as well as the difficult task performed by our border patrol agents.

        Feb 04, 2017 04:42 AM

        Al,
Both sides left and right dems and repubs have done nothing good for our country for decades. They both have exposed them selves as inept do-nothing’s. The more they fight Trump, the more stupid they look. President Trump is doing an outstanding job in the short 14 days in office. He will expose everyone who opposes him for two huge reasons. 1) He has the constitution on his side, and 2) he has the truth on his side. When you have the truth on your side, you can’t loose!

He will educate Anericans along the way by calling out the media and the dimwits. Most Americans don’t realize what he’s done so far (for Liberty ) but they will come around after they are educated. He’s actually started a revolution that a high percentage of Americans don’t even realize ” they are in “.

          Feb 04, 2017 04:20 AM

Chartster, I believe that you final sentence really says it all.

I am still in the “give him a chance mode”

I believe at this point that the immigration executive order was not the smartest thing to do. Yes, it will possibly stop some nasty events but Americans are believers in the “give us your poor and trodden” philosophy.

I come also in that camp. As you know my parents were immigrants They came over from Russian at the time of the Revolution in the case of my mom and from China in the case of my Dad.

One could have made the argument that anyone from Russia or China could possibly pose a security threat to the U.S. and should not be allowed to enter.

And, how about the Italians and the Mafia threat?

            Feb 04, 2017 04:51 AM

The funny thing is, Trump is enforcing Obama’s EO. Most don’t realize that. The president responsibility under the constitution is foreign trade, treaties and immigration. What Trump is enforcing has happened many times in the past. And it’s for a good reason. The freeze means they can come in later “if” they come in “correct”.

Chris Filar and Bob UK need an education. Socialism is theft, not charity. That is a fact. Was Jesus for theft?

No matter his faults, Winston Churchill was 100% correct:

“Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery.”

          Feb 05, 2017 05:03 AM

P.s. – The more ignorant one is, the more likely one is to roll their eyes at such a “radical” position statement. Sheeple don’t care about principles.

          Feb 05, 2017 05:05 PM

Kind of a touchy subject Matthew.

Socialism, in my opinion, is simply the largest disincentive known to man.

            Feb 05, 2017 05:53 PM

Al, the masses tolerate socialism because they are ignorant. They don not have a clue about what it really is and what the long term consequences are.

It can’t be repeated often enough:

“A society that chooses between capitalism and socialism does not
choose between two social systems; it chooses between social
cooperation and the disintegration of society. Socialism is not
an alternative to capitalism; it is an alternative to any system
under which men can live as human beings.”
            — Ludwig von Mises, Human Action

      Feb 04, 2017 04:34 AM

Now that is a great question, Chris

      CFS
      Feb 04, 2017 04:44 AM

Chris Filar, I don’t know which is the optimum healthcare system. That is above my level of knowledge/intelligence.
I do know, however, the following:
In those countries that have universal healthcare, the majority of the population like it.
But if you look in depth at those polls, you find that the majority of people that have had major health issues, complain of delays, long waits, inadequate treatment, etc..
(And, of course, those who actually died while waiting for treatment are not included in the results)

Secondly, it is almost universally accepted that the major country that did not have universal healthcare, namely the US.A., had the best healthcare……i.e. it was the best place to go if you needed the best treatment.
I am biased. That is the reason I live in the U.S. And I can afford to live anywhere in the world, and have lived in various European countries for much of my life.

I would estimate that the UK, which has had a National Healthcare system for almost seventy years, has lost much of its dominance in the world because of its socialized disincentives imposed by its high taxation system, which provides a subsidence quality of living and healthcare for much of its population. (It is interesting to note that the UK also has a private healthcare system that parallels the NHS. BUPA being the major provider; an insurance driven system.)
My exposure to national healthcare systems in England, Germany, Spain and Canada indicates to me that the quality of care seems to correlate with the economy.
So I would judge that the population gets the best national healthcare that the politicians decide the country can afford.

        Feb 04, 2017 04:19 PM

I think it is incorrect to assert that UK has lost its dominance due to the National Health Service. That is really stretching it. It does not take into account so many other factors such as just for one single example the vast superiority of access to natural resources in the USA on such a large land mass.

The UK also bankrupted itself in two world wars that it could not afford to fight and the costs are still being paid or rather, deferred indefinitely, as are the costs of all the social programs: welfare-warfare state but warfare usually trumps welfare.

I was somewhat seduced by the principles of Austrian economics in the past decade but now I see that it is actually kind of a charter for wannabe robber barons. The first red flag that I saw about Austrian economics was when I either heard a Rothbard lecture or a narration from one of his books regarding a privatized road system. In the 1980s, Rothbard was ahead of his time and forecast the idea of roadside detectors that would detect you car and bill you automatically as you went around on the roads and that would be held on some kind of – get this – centralized database. He was basically talking about RFID chips! What he was advocating was that a PRIVATE CORPORATION would hold all the data on everywhere you had been and when. That turned me off as being ridiculous. Can you imagine that kind of tyranny? As a replacement for a communal roads system where in theory you could go anywhere undetected? Give me a break.

Austrians are basically advocating something similar for healthcare. In the end it will be controlled by a few huge corporations and costs will be enormous. Give me socialized medicine any day, rather than that nightmare.

In the UK, we have parallel national and private healthcare. Some complain that private healthcare allows people to jump the queue in a sense but it really like having two queues. Private augments national mostly if you are relatively wealthy or have a package from your employer. That makes sense. Most people do not have any private insurance and NEVER need to worry about it. The phrase “pre-existing condition” is not even in our language over here.

My friend who live in the USA (yeah, ok, the people’s republic of California) who have good salaries say the healthcare is atrociously expensive and access is poor even then. I am unsure if she is on her husband’s health package but she is always the one in poor health so I guess probably not. Like mine, her mediocre health is an accident of birth.

US healthcare is twice as expensive as the UK (even taking private and public combined) and life expectancy in the UK is higher. Great value for money, huh? So who says that healthcare in the USA is the best? Only if you are rich. Even if you are rich, you can still have the fate of someone like Michael Jackson who, despite his vast wealth did not get great service out of his medics.

The NHS has many, many problems and is becoming more corrupt but I would not swap it for the US system and all the endless stresses that it seems to impose upon every man, woman and child in that country, all for the sake of some utopia of “free markets” that are not free anyway and never will be.

          Feb 05, 2017 05:16 AM

Looks like your decade of interest in Austrian economics didn’t do much for your understanding of it.

          CFS
          Feb 05, 2017 05:21 PM

I did not say the Uk lost its position because of the NHS. I said it lost its position because of socialist disincentives and high taxation. The NHS is just one very small factor.

Does experience, which increases with age, offset the stuck-in-a-rut mentality that fails to allow gains of productivity with innovation? Why is government bureaucracy so intractable at times? Why is it so common to see covers one’s butt attitudes universal in Government?
Government efficiency is more of an oxymoron than military intelligence.

The colder weather predictions are in line with solar cycle theory, which has indicated that we are entering a new cold period that parallels the Maunder Minimum cycle.

It also predicts the possibility of major earthquakes possible in the next few winters paralleling the New Madrid fault earthquakes in the early 1800’s
TIn 1811 and 1812, to be exact, which also occurred near the start of a climate minimum cycle.

Draghi finally acknowledges what has been obvious for years:

    http://www.inspiretochangeworld.com/2017/02/european-central-bank-ecb-head-mario-draghi-admits-first-time-eu-may-break/

The EU is destined to break up.
I sincerely hope that it does manage to develop into a free trade zone, as country barriers go up to movement of economic refugees, who are really just leeches on the under-belly of socialist societies.

On 911 he tried to get his cash, he had it in CDs.
Nope,no chance, Wall st shut down.

Thats one risk of the markets, it may just shut down the day we want access.

I already get “technical issues” on a somewhat regular basis.
That could get a tad frustrating if ya wanted to sell/buy at the time.

The ol’ adage I guess, if ya dont hold it ya dont own it.

ClimateGate 2 – NOAA Whistleblower Claims World Leaders Fooled By Fake Global Warming Data –

Dr John Bates’ disclosures about the manipulation of data behind the so-called ‘Pausebuster’ paper is the biggest scientific scandal since ‘Climategate’ in 2009 when, as Britain’s Daily Mail reported, thousands of leaked emails revealed scientists were trying to block access to data, and using a ‘trick’ to conceal embarrassing flaws in their claims about global warming.

So true Al. I think the same often. I would love to have all my liquid capital readily available, but it makes the rest of ones debt obligations difficult. Not that I have many at this stage.
