Like the great Jerry Lee Lewis, I am 39 and holding, holding everything I can,
from 21 to 38 to prove I’m still the man.

            Bonzo,

If you can get a copy of “A Tribute to Fats Domino” do so. Jerry Lee Lewis is a part of that along with Ron Wood of the Rolling Stones; and many others. I is recorded live at a night club in New Orleans.

        Hell, I can’t even remember 39!

Problem with liberals like Al and Dwight is that they believe there is a fundamental difference between government officials and non-government citizens. For example, Dwight says he believes in speed limits. But, he isn’t being truthful. He believes in speed limits for non-government citizens and no speed limits for government officials. Al and Dwight believe in the power of a badge to fundamentally change a person and improve his nature when nothing could be further from the truth. Another example of this kind of equivocation is found in the article AJ references above about Nevada gun laws. The author says, “Automatic weapons are supposed to be banned, but they aren’t.” But what he means is that the use of automatic weapons should be restricted to government officials only or that limits on the use of automatic weapons should be placed on non-government citizens, but not government officials. As Doug Wilson has correctly pointed out, “Gun control is about a rearrangement of the gun ownership—where the people below give them up, and the people above keep all of theirs.” So, here’s the million dollar question. When Al and Dwight enforce their ban and get ready to take away someone’s automatic weapons, what are they going to bring with them, strong language and kitchen spatulas?

    Oct 03, 2017 03:09 PM

Mr. Big Al Korelin, background checks are already done. And this guy didn’t have the permits for those automatic weapons he had.

So he was already breaking the law.

Just proves the old saying, “When guns are outlawed only outlaws will have guns.”

This guy proved it in spades.

      Oct 03, 2017 03:23 PM

Call me stupid and uninformed, I did not realize that back ground checks were done. Please explain

        Oct 03, 2017 03:30 PM

Dang, Mr. Big Al, don’t you know?? You can’t go to the bathroom in this country with out a background check. 🙂

But seriously, you sure can’t buy a gun without one and I don’t even know if you can legally get full automatic weapons anymore. I know at one time you could but you had to have a special permit from the feds and many states completely outlawed them. Anyway, at one time you could get them but they cost a fortune and the permitting process was expensive and time consuming.

It has been reported that he did NOT have automatic weapons, but had two “BUMP” stocks.

            Oct 03, 2017 03:02 PM

            What are “BUMP” stocks

            CFS
            Oct 03, 2017 03:33 PM

A bump stock is a stock that moves on firing recoil, so your finger moves just like another independent press on the trigger. So you don’t have to repeatedly press the trigger as in a standard semi-automatic.
with a bump stock you squeeze and the rifle keeps firing until the squeeze is released or you run out of rounds.

          Oct 03, 2017 03:43 PM

Background checks have been done for many years and you can still own Class III/full-autos (“machine guns”) with a permit. Like healthcare, they are expensive only because of the government.

Here’s a Colt M16 you can buy for just $33,000:

I believe there was a record of a purchase of a shotgun and a rifle from a local store to Stephen Paddock and there was a record of a background check having been made for that specific purchase.
Since there is no compilation of multiple purchases, it is possible that most of his purchases, if not all, had background checks.
Since Stephen Paddock did not have a criminal record (apart from a traffic violation) he would have passed background checks.

          Oct 03, 2017 03:48 PM

Most states don’t require the background check when the purchase involves private parties (not a dealer).

And, CFS, that is a good point!

What I heard was that he had automatic weapons and you need permits from the feds for those.

But it sounds like your info is more recent and he may have used bump stocks.

    The 2nd amendment states:

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

I see nothing wrong with the requirement that the US demands training and competency in the use of weapons prior to permitting ownership.

The problem with licensing is that is an infringement in the eyes of second amendment advocates.

I do not see anything unconstitutional in requiring storage of guns to be at licensed Militia locations only, except for police/security guards and other employed personnel
who need a license to perform their work.
I cannot see such a law getting passed, however, since people seem to believe the right to defend your person and property is a right given by the Constitution, which I do not believe is true.

The right to defend your property (which begins with your person) is a natural right. The U.S. Constitution doesn’t “give” rights, it acknowledges them.

Government derives its powers from the people. People should be allowed to have whatever the government has. That is the truth. The cold truth is that no one can be trusted. That is why we have checks and balances. Government officials are people and when people get elected they don’t suddenly change for the better. Often, they become worse, outwardly.

The cold truth is some people will act like bad animals when they get a chance. The warm truth is I trust my wife, and my son’s with rifles. It’s music to my ears to have my 11 year old hit a cow bell at 75 yards with his .22. Over and over…..

We license and register drivers and cars. Doesn’t stop accidents, cars used in crimes, etc. Drunk driving, Jihadis driving people over, drugs being smuggled for example.

I worked in the firearms industry for 17 years, I am a former deputy sheriff, and currently work in security for the US government in Washington, DC. Check IP address.

We have plenty of gun control, we don’t need any more. Throughout time governments have killed millions more people than rednecks with CCWs or crack heads doing drivebys in the ‘hood.

Civil War, WW1, WW2, Korea, Vietnam, etc. All mass grave wars started by government employees, not civilians with private arms. Just saying.

And don’t ask how many guns I own or how much ammo or gun powder I have stockpiled because if I told you you would call DHS, the Army, the UN, etc. lol

      JohnK,

The Constitution gives the power to overtake the government by force, if necessary.

It does not give the right to defend yourself or property by gunpower. You are right. That is not the purpose of the Constitution.

Common law has always recognized the legitimate use of lethal force in self defense.
It generally does not recognize the use of lethal force for protection of property.

The more clear it becomes that our leaders are bloodthirsty psychos, the clearer the importance of the right to bear arms.

If Americans ever surrender their guns, a bloodbath like we saw in Stalin’s Russia and in Mao’s China is likely to follow.

    Al:
Very good conversation with your guest and I pretty much agree with both of you on this subject.
Fully automatic weapons I believe are illegal or heavily restricted since 1986. Those in existence at that time can be sold but under license restrictions.
But modifications like the bumper stock are available and legal and even though they don’t completely make a weapon totally automatic, they increase the speed of firing to about 9-10 rounds per minute, while fully automatic speeds can be many times that, depending on the weapon. If you are on the receiving end, the difference is technical only.
Background checks are the law today although I think one can still purchase a weapon at a gun-show and escape that requirement.
I hunted all my life and still possess those rifles and shotguns “in order to protect my home and family, like your guest, but I never felt I needed the assault type weapons we used in Vietnam. Neither does anyone else in my opinion.
Common sense exhibited in your argument though, isn’t in charge. The NRA is and by using the threat of taking someone’s seat away in Congress, puts the scare into otherwise sensible people.
Australia went through this situation years ago after a mass shooting. They took action to prevent it ever again and to date, have succeeded. Look into it.
Thanks much for your courage in discussing the subject. As you likely suspected several of the crazies exposed themselves and that shows you why we are destined to see someone else try to best the numbers created by our latest shooter.

Drunk driving alone kills at least 10,000 people a year in the U.S.. Let’s not even get into the alcohol-related beatings, murders, suicides, broken families, diseases associated with its use. Where is the outrage over the use of alcohol, which is consumed for FUN? Compare that to the numbers killed by “assault rifles” every year and it’s a joke. Plus, people don’t own guns for fun necessarily, at least the ones at issue here. They are to enable the fundamental human right of self defense, not to mention as a check against the tyranny of the majority–the rationale behind the second amendment, and the entire bill of rights. Anyone who drinks alcohol and is for tighter gun control is a flat out hypocrite.
