USD – Fundamentals Point Up, Technicals Point Down

Cory
December 28, 2017

Doc is with me today to outline the discrepancies between the fundamentals and technicals. Fundamentals are pointing to a stronger dollar but when looking at technicals we are seeing weakness. Timing is important and it is typical to see fundamentals factors take longer to materialize.

USD fundamentals also point down, in my opinion.

In other news, it looks like the miners still want to go higher before taking a breather…

Are the fundamentals strong for the dollar?

The Trump Administration does not want a strong dollar.
China is increasingly disposing of its dollar bond holdings and moving that money back to China.
There are vast numbers of immigrants, legal and illegal (an extra 1.8 million last year) that are earning or receiving money in the US and sending it abroad to help family members. (We like to think of this as peanuts in the big picture of things, but given enough immigrants, this will slowly destroy the dollar as wealth leaves the country.)
Balance of trade is still negative.

Are the fundamentals all that strong?

    Dec 28, 2017 28:00 PM

Doc if dollar is headed lower then gold will probably not test that lower range of 1200-1220 you were saying it could test this summer? Any changes to that because of dollar?

      Dec 28, 2017 28:17 PM

Paul, not yet. I still believe that if we don’t get a significant rally in gold early in this year the spring/summer will still drive gold down to that 1200-1220 area. The first 2 weeks of 2018 will tell the tale of the PMs short term—I didn’t like the performances of the PM stocks today considering the fact gold had a decent move.

        Dec 28, 2017 28:26 PM

I see today’s action as having only short term potential relevance. In fact, the day was net positive technically, in my opinion, as the bears accomplished nothing by the time GDX:GLD finished the session. Considering the run up so far, and assuming this has been just a typical rally, the bears should have been able to do more for their side today.

On the following GDX:GLD chart, we have a broken nearly one year old downtrend along with important daily MAs providing support and nothing that says we should sell.

        http://stockcharts.com/h-sc/ui?s=GDX%3AGLD&p=D&yr=1&mn=1&dy=0&id=p52611448993&a=566127619

          Dec 28, 2017 28:37 PM

Another non-technical reason I see for pressure on the PMs yet is the fact there are a number of PM stocks that technically are screaming they have to move lower before bottoming out. It doesn’t make sense they would move appreciatively lower if gold/silver stayed at these levels or higher.

            Dec 28, 2017 28:17 PM

Yes, more than a few look like they “must” go lower but it is typical of a bull market to see obvious downside targets never reached (even after obvious upside targets were have been exceeded). This is why the following comment contains the last sentence…

            On December 7, 2017 at 11:03 am,
            Matthew says:
The bounce that I’ve been expecting never happened but, despite being wrong, I’m fine with that.
The more the sector can drop without coming up for air, the better the odds will be for a significant low to happen sooner rather than later.

I’ve been buying SILJ lately, including today, but still think it will probably fill the big weekly gap from April, 2016. It will be a bullish sign if it doesn’t get filled.

            http://stockcharts.com/h-sc/ui?s=SILJ&p=W&yr=5&mn=0&dy=0&id=p72122900591&a=526433040

            Dec 28, 2017 28:20 PM

It seems bullish to me that SILJ avoided filling that gap even after the bears spent 86 weeks taking it back to it.

          Dec 28, 2017 28:11 PM

I had a lot of PM stocks up today in my portfolio and thought it was a positive day but didn’t dwell as much on what was going on with the larger Majors & Midtiers.

            Dec 28, 2017 28:18 PM

I just checked all the watchlists from Majors, to Mid-tiers, to Small Producers, to Developers, and explorers and it was an evenly distributed day with 1/3 positive, 1/3 flat, and 1/3 negative on the day.

It didn’t seem like any particularly important day, just business as usual….

    Dec 28, 2017 28:31 PM

Doc, what do you think about the stock XAUMF which is gold money? And are we due in the first of 2018 for a pullback on gold and silver and what are your targets?

      Dec 28, 2017 28:24 PM

Pardu, see my comment above. Also be very careful with XAUMF. It looks like it’s run is over for some time and the odds are that it breaks down here and heads lower. I don’t like the technicals at this time.

ANFIELD RESOURCES ANNOUNCES NAME CHANGE AND SHARE CONSOLIDATION
22 Dec 2017 (ARY) is now (AEC) (ANLDD)

        http://anfieldresources.com/anfield-resources-announces-name-change-and-share-consolidation/

          Dec 28, 2017 28:08 PM

IMO now is the time to start adding to Anfield Energy Inc. (AEC).

Remember this is the company Anfield Resources that acquired many of the previous US assets from Uranium One and it will be going into production for low cost ISR Uranium production this next year. In addition it has a very interesting Vanadium project, which is the only specialty metal on the radar capable of derailing the Lithium-Ion Battery. If the Vanadium redox flow batteries take off, then this is a nice secondary asset.

After a stock goes through a name change and reverse split there is typically an lull where investors get confused on what just happened, some bail, some shares get hung up on different platforms, etc…

On a percentage basis, Anfield Energy could really be a multibagger over the next year or two.

            Dec 28, 2017 28:32 PM

Ex, when the share consolidation is announced that signals a sell for me until sometime after the consolidation takes place. At least a couple of days if not two to three weeks later. DT

Great info, thanks once again 🙂

            Dec 28, 2017 28:08 PM

DT yes agreed that few days to a few weeks is best to let the dust settle after a reverse split – The news was on 12/22/2017 from last Friday, so it was a week ago at this point.

There is no rush of course, as we are talking about Uranium mining here 🙂

If the Uranium miners do have their Jan/Feb rally then more eyeballs may be scanning the sector for undervalued deals and if you pull up a long term chart, this one has been murdered. They took over the symbol of an old Oil/Gas company who also had a terrible death spiral into 2016.

There will only be about 21 Million shares out after the consolidation, so that’s pretty tight to kick off the new chapter for this company.

GH – It’s a much higher risk Uranium miner at this point, but really most of the downside has just occurred. Some of the more popular names in the sector like UEC, URG, UEX, DNN, UUUU, NXE, etc… have already put in nice moves since mId November. For ARY now AEC – this consolidation has been hanging over their heads and they haven’t yet participated in the rally. I’m going to be picking some shares up just in case there is a “catch up” rally now that the deal is done.

Anaconda mining is an old company , if memory serves me right I believe they had a gold mine near Squamish British Columbia, over 50 years ago. If it’s the same company there is not only history backing them up but also experience. DT

      Dec 28, 2017 28:31 PM

DT are you getting on the ANX train with us? 2018 is going to be a good year for Anaconda if they lock into their exploration work on Goldboro. That project used to belong to Orex.

        Dec 28, 2017 28:57 PM

Yes Ex, I have been picking up shares in tranches. I think this company will be a compliment to my portfolio. DT

          Dec 28, 2017 28:00 PM

Anaconda is sitting on more than they even realize according to the Unknown Geologist, from when he worked underground at Goldboro in 1988 (it’s currently been filled with water, when they pump it out and start exploring down there, it will turn a few heads).

P.S. – I posted a slew of info on Anaconda on this KER report in the recent past:

(about 2/3 of the way down)

          http://www.kereport.com/2017/12/19/wrong-timing-qe-inflation/

            Dec 28, 2017 28:51 PM

Ex, I remember the trouble Cameco had with mine dewatering, this could take a long time, I’m thinking maybe 6 months to one year. Do you have any projections in regards to pumping the water so the mine can be accessed. DT

            Dec 28, 2017 28:48 PM

Well keep in mind that Anaconda has 3 different assets:

            1) Their flagship is their Point Rousse mine/mill and they already have production here that they are continuing to optimize. This is what their current primary valuation is based on, and there is still considerable exploration upside around this mine.

            2) Their Goldboro asset is the one they picked up by acquiring Orex Mining in April/May of this year and it is the asset that many believe will transform the company. This is the asset where they are doing quite a bit of drilling from surface, and have all the historic drilling info, and will be putting out a PEA in 2018. This is also where the old shafts are flooded that once de-watered could really raise some eyebrows from investors when they get in there to do further exploration work. The PEA will likely be released before they flush out exactly just how high grade some of the areas are down below, but THAT is going the to be their upside surprise. Yeah, 6 months to 1 year sounds reasonable to pump it out, but I’m looking forward for more guidance on how they plan to proceed on the PEA they release.

            3) Viking project made up of 2 projects – more on the exploration side, and the resource defined here can be barged over water to their Point Rousse mill for more synergies, without having to build a second mill here at this site.

They have 2 other prospective properties, but those are the 3 main projects.

Goldboro is the project that has captured the imagination of investors beyond the Point Rousse production story, and the supplemental deposit from Viking. From what I’ve learned Goldboro will be an absolute beast of a project when they uncover what they are actually sitting on there.

            Fun times!

    By William Clowes – December 27, 2017

Mining companies in the Democratic Republic of Congo have urged lawmakers to rethink new legislation that could lead to acrimony between the government and the industry.

“Local subsidiaries of Glencore Plc, China Molybdenum Co., Randgold Resources Ltd., Ivanhoe Mines Ltd. and MMG Ltd. sent a letter, which has been seen by Bloomberg, to Leon Kengo wa Dondo and Aubin Minaku, respectively the presidents of the Senate and National Assembly. Chris Berry: Consolidation and M&A coming to the lithium space in 2018
Palisade Radio | about 7 hours ago

“There is a powerful economic tail-wind in play right now. Battery technology and prices are continuing to get cheaper. Solar, wind, and batteries are all getting more affordable and as technology improves the energy metals look increasingly promising.”

“China usually does what they say they will do, and they want seven million new vehicles on the road by 2025. That alone will increase lithium demand from 215k tons to over 300k tons. He feels E.V. demand will center around China and their desire to clean up air quality.”

“Investment interest is still lagging, and there is much room for growth. As underlying commodity prices improve, the stocks and market caps are likely to perform well.”

“Mr. Berry expects that the general theme for 2018 will be one of consolidation and acquisitions as major companies look for long-term supply. He discusses various companies that can provide good pure exposure to the market.”

BEIJING (AP) — China is responding to Washington’s tax overhaul by offering foreign companies a break on Chinese taxes in a bid to retain investment.

The measure announced late Thursday is Beijing’s first major reaction to the U.S. decision to cut corporate tax rates. It follows a flurry of promises by communist leaders to spur growth in the slowing, state-dominated economy by opening more industries wider to foreign companies.

Foreign companies will be exempt from withholding taxes on profits they re-invest in industries specified by Beijing, the Finance Ministry and tax agency announced. It is retroactive to Jan. 1, 2017, meaning companies would receive a refund on taxes paid this year.

Beijing wants to “attract foreign investors after a host of countries unveiled similar measures to lure foreign and domestic investment,” the official Xinhua News Agency said.

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — President Donald Trump’s administration is rescinding proposed rules for hydraulic fracturing and other oil- and gas-drilling practices on government lands, government officials announced Thursday.

The rules developed under President Barack Obama would have applied mainly in the West, where most federal lands are located. Companies would have had to disclose the chemicals used in fracking, which pumps pressurized water underground to break open hydrocarbon deposits.

The rules to be rescinded Friday were supposed to take effect in 2015 but a federal judge in Wyoming blocked them at the last minute. In September, the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Denver declined to rule in that case because the Trump administration intended to rescind the rules.

The long-awaited change drew praise from industry groups including the Washington, D.C.-based Independent Petroleum Association of America and Denver-based Western Energy Alliance, which sued to block the rules.

CFS comment: This will not affect State regulations.

Reports: Turkey, Russia Sign Loan Deal For S-400 Air System
Associated Press – Fri Dec 29, 4:40AM CST
ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Turkish media are reporting that Turkish and Russian officials have signed a financing agreement for the purchase of a Russian-made anti-missile system worth $2.5 billion.

The Hurriyet Daily News newspaper said the loan deal for four S-400 surface-to-air missile batteries was signed in the Turkish capital Ankara on Friday.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced in September that Turkey had signed a deal to buy Russia’s most advanced air defense system, drawing concerns from some of Turkey’s NATO allies.

Some NATO countries have expressed worries that the S-400 system is not compatible with the alliance’s weapons systems.

Pure propaganda is a bit strong from the Reuters article, but I believe the issue some took with the South Korean situation, is that it was a ban on those “temporary” bank accounts accessing cryptos, which is a common practice over there, more so than the normal registered bank accounts.

It was correct from one standpoint, but should have clarified the difference in the ban on the temporary versus registered bank accounts.

Regardless there was a dip in the cryptos and stocks when it was released.

Anyone have any thoughts on what the big copper play of 2018 will be???Between Katusa and Wealth Report and a couple of other investment teams (touts or whatever you want to call them) they have all talked up copper big and said there was one hugely undervalued big play they all will be sharing with their subscribers in early January….I’m leaning towards nevsun but open to others input

      Dec 29, 2017 29:04 AM

Trilogy Metals, Entree Resources, Regulus, and Turquoise Hill should have good years.

If you’d like a link to my 200 company Copper Watchlist there are tons of good candidates:

        Dec 29, 2017 29:20 AM

Thanks Ex.I probably didn’t phrase it the best ….they all seem to hint at there being a huge deposit that is being way undervalued. If northern dynasty hadn’t had such a big run the past year it would have fit the bill. I was between nevsun Ivanhoe and even Mcewen (Argentina play I believe) size of deposit being so potentially huge is what should make it a more narrow list

          Dec 29, 2017 29:33 AM

Oh. Well there are a ton of Copper deposits that are still way undervalued, many of them are quite huge in nature.

I like that MUX copper deposit by the way. As to which one Katusa and the Wealth report are pumping now there is no telling.

I think Pebble is still in their sights for Northern Dynasty, but Katusa also really pumped Black Sea Copper and Gold a while back.

My buddy @MiningBookGuy really likes Xanadu Mines.

@Pamplona trader mentioned Atalaya Mining yesterday as a potential.

Honestly I think one of the largest copper projects out there is the one that EMX Royalty has a strategic investment in Russia (IG Copper LLC):

Amerigo Resources looks interesting to me, as does Atico Mining and Trigon Metals.

            Dec 29, 2017 29:41 AM

Sama Resources for Nickel/Copper is also getting pumped a lot recently by Pamps and others.

            Dec 29, 2017 29:43 AM

Avanco and Highland Copper are a few more.

I traded Quaterra few times earlier this year on the thoughts that now the Copper prices are improving the projects may come back into vogue.

One of my larger Copper/Nickel/PGMs/Gold assets is still Polymet. They finally got their permits to proceed after over a decade of work. that is going to be a nice polymetallic project when it gets into production.

Here is one extremely appealing monthly chart of the XAU priced in the Dow. As you can see, the miners are still down 97% versus the Dow since the XAU-Dow ratio peaked in 1984 even though they are currently up 49% since the ratio bottomed in 2016 (PRECISELY at the first touch of a fork support that was decades in the making).

The next leg of this new bull market is likely to last much longer than the 6-7 months we enjoyed in 2016 – with pullbacks along the way, of course.

Notice that the XAU:DOW ratio is still well below its October 2000 low:

    Freedom of speech in Iran:

By JON GAMBRELL – Associated Press – Thu Dec 28, 12:55PM CST
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Iranians angry over rising food prices and inflation protested in the country’s second-largest city and other areas Thursday, putting new pressure on President Hassan Rouhani as his signature nuclear deal with world powers remains in peril.

The protests in Mashhad saw police make an unspecified number of arrests, local authorities said, though the country’s powerful Revolutionary Guard and its affiliates did not intervene as they have in other unauthorized demonstrations since Iran’s disputed 2009 election.

It wasn’t immediately clear how many people took part in Thursday’s protests, though social media posts suggest several thousand likely demonstrated at rallies across at least three other cities.

Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency quoted the governor of the northeastern city of Mashhad, Mohammad Rahim Norouzian, as saying there was an illegal “No to high prices” gathering in the city.

*KNT has really been on the move the last 2 weeks since this press release and the JRr mining rally started. I have a nice position in it and think the market got overly hyped and then spooked on this one, but people should just look at how much work they did on exploration around the mine to prove to the market the continued high grade hits and continuity.
