US Markets Being Lead By Tech, Small Caps, and Share Buybacks

Cory
June 5, 2018

Doc joins me today to focus on the US equity markets. For as much as we hear negative comments the markets are showing some strength recently. Small caps and tech have been leading the way which, in the case of small caps, can be bullish sign. When we look under the hood we see that share buybacks still dominate the demand side but this time it’s because of tax reform and less about low interest rates. Many things to consider before getting too bullish.

We have spent years building the reputation as the great satan, why would we throw that away now?

We must learn to serve our masters, and be happy about it.

Doc, the economy may be weak but there will always be a surplus of fools in the world who will keep on smoking. Now the tobacco companies have all just gone down 33%. Look at PM, MO, IMBBY, and BTI. As you used to recommend Pall Malls to your patients do you think we should buy BTI, who sells Pall Mall, Camels, Kent, Viceroy, Kool, Dunhill, and Rothmans ?
    It yields 5%.

      Jun 05, 2018 05:39 PM

BB; all of these stocks look like they might rally in the short term but the path of least resistance looks down. However, having said that, it looks to me that IMBBY has the most potential in the medium term. I would believe it gets support at a price right around 30. IMO, the rest of them could be in a world of hurt for the next few months. Thanks for the alert; I’m putting IMBBY on my watch list and may take a position right around 30 bucks. Does it have a dividend?

        Jun 05, 2018 05:56 PM

Doc, I inherited some IMBBY from my mom. I had her buy it many it years ago for the dividend. The dividend is between 4 and 6%, depending on the coversion rate of British pounds to dollars. IMBBY is the biggest importer of Cuban cigars. But analysts seem to think BTI has more growth and better cigarette brands, and a 5% yield. Why do you prefer IMBBY?

          Jun 05, 2018 05:44 PM

BB; just looking at the technicals. It looks like BTI technically could fall a lot further then IMBBY.

            Jun 06, 2018 06:08 AM

Doc, IMBBY has some good brands: WInston, Salem, Kool, and John Player(smoked by James Bond), as well as half the company that exports all the Cuban cigars. And if youcan buy it at 30 you would have a big yield too.

      Jun 05, 2018 05:39 PM

To be fair, I quite like the odd cigarette

Saudi Arabia gave White House aides jewellery worth hundreds of thousands of dollars in large suitcases, according to Ben Rhodes, former speechwriter and deputy national security adviser in the Obama administration.

          Jun 05, 2018 05:34 PM

The trip to Saudi Arabia was the beginning of Obama’s first tour of the Middle East as president, and preceded his famous Cairo speech which he intended as a message to the Muslim world.

Rhodes says at first he thought the bagged treasure was a bribe, to influence him as he wrote Obama’s speech.

However, he soon learned he was not the only member of the delegation to be lavished with such expense.

“We all got suitcases full of jewels,” the former aide told the Guardian newspaper.

“We all gave them to the state protocol office who handles gifts. You have the option to buy the gifts, but given the price – I don’t remember what it was but it was tens of thousands, I believe – no one kept them that I recall.”

          Valued guests
The State Department’s register notes the Saudis gave Rhodes “one pair of silver cufflinks, one male watch, one female watch, one silver pen, and one diamond jewellery set including earrings, a ring, and a bracelet, presented in a green leather case”.

It justifies the acceptance of such gifts by saying “non-acceptance would cause embarrassment to [the] donor and US government
