This is a follow on to the question Big Al as to why things are happening in the U S and no one seems to care.
What comes to my mind is the saying, when in Rome, do as the Romans.
What we have in the U S is the demographics of an aging population and the lack of a means test for a failing retirement system that was never intended for the total sustenance of future living.
What we have are retirees with substantial savings drawing Social Security checks, much like the weatherization program not based on assets/income but rather income alone.
I will add I use to derive a fairly comfortable living thanks to this program.
At the risk of offending everybody, here goes.
I have labeled it the associated mental illness of the Social Security Retirement System, and the proliferation of the entitlement generation.
Complex issues such as this are seldomly of a binary nature, but rather are usually multi faceted.
What I don’t understand is why as a Veteran I am means tested as to how much I pay for my medical care, and Social Security recipients are not.
Why is it when someone lives in a Million dollar house, has Two Million in savings is still receiving a Check from a Retirement System that has been broke for years.
You want to know how to lose an Election?
Mention anything about Social Security checks and the Entitlement generation.
When I started working the Feds used to only take out a limited amount of SSI, and by April or May it had maxxed out, and obviously was not a full retirement coverage.
But to buy votes politicians started handing out benefits to people that had hardly paid in anything. They (yhe politicians) started increasing SSI and it was no longer clear that it should not be total retirement coverage; indeed on the amount I was paying, it was clearly more than enough to cover FULL retirement.
So, I don’t buy it, if politicians (Known liars) claim it was not full retirement coverage.
The fact is it was NEVER invested but spent by politicians. Had it been well invested, instead of being used to buy votes, it would have been more than enough.
You are absoluteln correct it was absolutely never invested and it was absolutely always spent and now it is insolvent.

Is it not the case that Rome appeared to have conquered the world, but was only able to maintain the cost of doing so by the plunder it took from the conguered. As soon as the Empire ceased expanding and no plunder was easily available, combined with declining weather conditions, the Fall of the Empire was inevitable.
