This is area where I have tremendous dilemmas.
What right does a state (country) have to act in loco parentis ?
My problem is that on the one hand, I believe, in general, parents know best their child.
But on the other hand, I recognize there are many lousy parents: some of whom should simply not be parents.
So, at what point should the state take over ?
I guess I believe that for any child to be removed from parental direction and knowledge of the child’s welfare, there should be FIRST a formal limitation or removal of parental rights.
I recognize this is costly in time and manpower, possible court action etc., but I firmly believe any other procedure reduces to individual and possibly arbitrary or capricious actions, made by one social worker.
In my experience, having been involved in father’s divorce counselling for over a decade in a county in which, short of incarceration of the mother, custody of children was, without exception, given to mothers, I tend not to trust government workers who may only have an hour or so total familiarity with a child’s circumstances and history. (I do recognize my experience comes from a different time and history and things have changed in more recent times.) I still do not trust individual gpvernment worker’s decisions, especially in circumstances where record files tend to be sealed and unavailable for scrutiny.
If it is a close choice between Government control over children verses individual or parental rights, I will always choose individual rights.
There are times for intervention, and bad or dangerous circumstances for children when laws are broken – but there must be transparent and community accepted actions. I agree CFS, I have little trust in an overworked and poorly trained social worker that has no background knowledge of a child’s circumstances – they make mistakes, many times over.
Too much government control is more dangerous, as we are witnessing, than too little. Individual rights and community moral standards are more important and helpful than authoritarian control.
Sadly, I do not see parents as evolving into more caring human beings over time.
Parents clearly, on average, tend to be less strict than a few generations ago, but I do not see evidence, on average, of better parenting. I see increasing numbers of single parent families.
Call me an old dodderer, but I still two parents, one male and one female, as being the optimum parenting unit…..preferably even with grandparents living in close proximity.
Having been involved in an organization called Janus Youth Programs where I was elevated to the position of Board Chairman I had a situation where I attempted to strike a “partnership” between Janus and the Portland Trail Blazers. I reached the end of this road and was told by Janis Personal that the majority of the stating five could not meet individually with any of our clients. Now, what is the legal difference between that situation and the situation with Dr. Levine? Go figure!
There needs to be specific regulations written which are not up to the descretion of a Social Worker. I don’t believe that any credible social worker would disagree with that.
Now you’re thinking about the issue…..let me throw in another consideration…
