Some people still believe that calling the US a police and surveillance state is an exaggeration.  Even if it were granted that it is an exaggeration, it is becoming increasingly difficult to reject that description.
Transit authorities in cities across the country are quietly installing microphone-enabled surveillance systems on public buses that would give them the ability to record and store private conversations, according to documents obtained by a news outlet.

The systems are being installed in San Francisco, Baltimore, and other cities with funding from the Department of Homeland Security in some cases,

This is for the people’s own good, as always.
Not quite the America we grew up with.  Need we mention that this is another violation of the 4th amendment?

    AL:

I certainly share your concerns about the increased proliferation of surveillence by our government. It threatens our privacy and individual liberties plus it raises some serious 4th amendment concerns.

For example, I was able to find out last night exactly where you were by simply typing in your cell phone number.

      Needed that after today’s news.

        Hey All,
A quick heads up and for what it is worth to you guys: Dr. Stephen Leeb is recommending as a “public service announcement” as he call it to check out the gold junior – NOVAGOLD. It was on my watch list and has been for a while. The top three hedge funds are invested in it including Paulson and Company. Also Fidelity mgmt and Van Eck. According to Dr. Leeb, their gold reserves are now at 38 MILLION ounces with a ton of money in the bank – in, of course, friendly ALASKA. Might start accumulating a position is that company now. Comments? A no brainer or what??

Marc, I believe much higher gold prices are needed before either Donlin or Galore get developed and into production. This makes Nova very risky if you don’t think gold is going substantially higher. It also means tremendous and very appealing leverage for the serious bulls. I don’t own it, but it is food for thought that these big boys do. Perhaps the rest of us aren’t bullish enough? Remember, too, that players of such size would have a very difficult time establishing a meaningful position in anything much smaller/less liquid -finally, there’s something positive about not being a billionaire. I would rather buy miners with 1/100 the MCAP.

Latest filings for NG from Canadian Insider:
          http://www.canadianinsider.com/node/7?menu_tickersearch=NG+|+NovaGold+Resources

I don’t know how bullish or bearish “grant of options” and “grant of rights” are.
Marc Faber is on the board of directors.

NG has been well talked-about here in the past (someone named Rhylin, but she no longer seems to work there…). NG was a darling a couple years back because it was big enough for large buyers to take positions in. Soros lightened-up his position significant about 18 months ago, causing some to wonder if he knew something. The projects look terrific, but would not produce until at least 2018, which also scared-off some other investors. I still like the company, but like Matthew says, traders may find other small caps more volatile but also present more buy and selling opps. Still, if gold ever goes wild, NG will be sought after by the big boys again.

            Dec 15, 2012 15:58 PM

Rhylin left NG for all the right reasons. And, I am not inferring that NG is a bad company. I, by the way, don’t own any stock.

    Dec 14, 2012 14:00 PM

i am sorry to say that the situation on public buses ,subways is such that both teens and sometimes adults, do threaten and abuse other riders . i was in such situations myself. I defended a black lady who was subject to verbal language[including sexual comments] on the subway. 2 black teen boys were the offenders. i was alone[white] and much smaller than the large teen boys. they in turn started to threaten me. but it did not lead to blows. after they got off the lady thanked me. if they had an active recording system they could apprehend , and better prosucute such persons. i dont like the solution , but ignore it we cant do. What do you think ?? S

      Dec 14, 2012 14:20 PM

I think you are a brave gentleman..that’s what I think!

      Dec 14, 2012 14:45 PM

Scott, you are exactly right! Whatever measures need to be taken to safeguard the public is surely worth it. I’ve been in several situations on public transit where I thought I was going to be attacked and its just by sheer luck that it didnt happen. I’ve witnessed several people being robbed, assaulted and verbal threatening abuse is commonplace. I’d LOVE for there to be cameras recording everything and if thats not possible, then at the very least audio recording. Anything that may deter and/or help apprehend some of the many violent people in our society today. I can only assume that many of the people commenting about civil liberties etc etc do not need to travel by bus/train regularly and can sit in the comfort of their nice cars.

        Dec 15, 2012 15:07 PM

        Hi Steve,

I am with you, but I would guess that many of those sitting “in the comfort of their nice cars” have feelings very similar to those utilizing rapid transit.

We have and will continue to utilize rapid transit whenever we are in cities where it is available.

Quick story, we were in New York last May and took the subway to Yankee Stadium. The only comment (which says it all, by the way) that I would make is to tell you that as Kathy and I were leaving the subway I said to her, “That ride restored my faith in humanity.”)

      Dec 15, 2012 15:11 PM

I think we need more people like you, Scott!

Many people don’t know that when you photo copy anything it is stored on the copiers hard drive and by downloading free forensic software on the internet you can retrieve the same.

Always copy documents on your own machine and destroy the hard drive when it is abandoned; criminals love to buy used photo copiers. DT

      Dec 14, 2012 14:30 PM

Copied documents also print the printer’s serial number in a small yellow microdot on the page. All consumer printers sold since 2002 in the US or so have the feature by law.

Thanks for the advice, Machine Gun!

    Dec 14, 2012 14:10 PM

Is RT reporting that all U.S. citizens are under surveillance the reason for this topic?
Honustly, I dont know how much more proof is required for people to see a police state. For some people there will never be enough proof I think. Truly funny how the mind works, I keep telling myself Im going to read a mass psychology book for markets.

Hey marc, there is a huge deposit in Alaska, unfortunatly it is right next to a river that spawns 60% of the pacific salmon, the deposit is there but thats the issue, I dont know if Novagold owns it or not, 38 million oz sounds familiar tho.
My guess is they do the mine, In Canada Harper is changing lotsa rules to access resources, to heck with the envirnment, maybe the same thing in Alaska, might be all about jobs. Anyway, if thats the one youll make a ton of cash, which of course you will need if you wanna eat a pacific salmon.

What made America great, it was from immigration that allowed people who were oppressed to state their feelings and live their lives without the fear of oppression, America has forgot why it was #1, and another country will fill that void, unless they can learn tolerance and equality once again.

Read about England in the beginning of the 17th century, they had respect for women’s rights, it was a tolerant society that made them great for 200 years and then they became closed. DT

      Dec 15, 2012 15:03 PM

Machine Gun, tolerance is great and I believe in it completely. I simply hate to see the law broken flagrantly and then absolutely nothing done about it.

Just look at the financial status of California!

    Dec 14, 2012 14:47 PM

The cradle of civilization started in The Mediterranean and The Middle East but now their societies have forgotten the lesson of being tolerant of other cultures and assimilating other ideas into their own society to make life not only prosperous but also advanced in everything they do.

Canada has accepted the multi-cultural society which is one reason we are prosperous, people want to live in places where they feel at ease. DT

      Dec 15, 2012 15:01 PM

Machine Gun, we just got back from Vancouver and I cannot agree with you more!

Remember I have been a very frequent visitor to your country for over 30 years and that our youngest daughter is now a permanent residence with almost dual citizenship which will happen very shortly.

I don’t care what anybody says, Canadians know the truth of capitalism!

    Jim Sinclair’s Commentary
There is a definition of US Fascism in this illustration. It is certainly no joke, or cartoon, but spot on.
    ********************************************************************************************
Fascism should rightly be called Corporatism, as it is the merger of corporate and government power.
    Benito Mussolini
Democracy is beautiful in theory; in practice it is a fallacy.
    Benito Mussolini
The keystone of the Fascist doctrine is its conception of the State, of its essence, its functions, and its aims. For Fascism the State is absolute, individuals and groups relative.
    Benito Mussolini

      Dec 15, 2012 15:55 PM

And to take it one step further, under fascism the government is given the authority to decide what is correct for the individual because it knows better.

Sorry, not my cup of tea!

    Dec 14, 2012 14:59 PM

With where society is going maybe we need more surveillance as people don’t follow rules and laws of society and are more prone to violence through the infuence of media and violent games. There is the risk of terrorist attacks by foreign extremists or even a local attack such as what happened today. Schools should have much more monitoring and armed guards as guns will never be controlled. The only gun control that could work is complete confiscation of all guns and that will never happen. That is the law in some countries.

      Dec 15, 2012 15:52 PM

Isn’t it a damn shame that it has gotten to that point!
