Disclosure: I currently have 45 (public) websites I update on Amazon Web Services, 1 on Google Cloud Services.

Cloud service providers Amazon, Google, Microsoft, IBM, … have allowed the commoditization of website delivery. I don’t need a rack of servers ($30,000-$80,000), I don’t need to co-locate servers around the world, … It costs hardly anything to serve websites worldwide (at least before people use the websites.) Amazon has allowed me to have website data located in Amsterdam, Melbourne, Sydney, Singapore, Marseilles, London, Dublin, Duesseldorf, … Vancouver & Portland.

There was so much you could reply to in this podcast. I should have taken notes. What might happen to Amazon is that someday it could be broken up, like Standard Oil was.

Back in the 80’s Ronald Reagan started the privatization of government services. Where I worked, EDS (Ross Perot) was awarded a large contract to take over the running of Navy Supply’s computers. I just see the Amazon CIA data center as an extension of this. Amazon is in the business of providing cloud services. It builds data centers all over the world. Some organizations like the CIA or the military need their own private data center for security reasons. The CIA is just another customer for AWS. The government probably feels they save money and get quality service by dealing with Amazon.

It’s not just Amazon. Amazon, Google, and Facebook have become the internet (and could well bypass the internet, cutting out the middlemen) They collect details about us automatically and seamlessly – and with our permission. They can pretty much do what they want with the data. They aren’t bound by the limits we place on government. (That data could someday be used by the government to track you cradle to grave.) Having a limited number of persons in control of our data makes the government’s job easier when they want influence. It’s like the government rather dealing with foreign dictators then democracies.

(Remember: Amazon and Jeff Bezos were on the ropes in the 2000 dot com bust. This was a guy that had to drive a forklift himself. He’s not doctor evil.)

Amazon has only been able to do what it’s done because investors have bought into the vision, and have been willing to forego profits. If that changes, Amazon’s stock price will decline and Jeff Bezos will have to wait a while to take over the “richest man in the world” title. Which I bet is a title he really doesn’t care about.

      Stephan,

We did this editorial to provoke comments and we kind of succeeded. As I replied to Bob M. above, I am on the side of free enterprise and I do think that Bezos is a genius. I use Amazon services daily. Quite frankly I was somewhat glad to see that most of the folks agreed with Cory. How about you?

      Nov 19, 2017 19:42 AM

Thank you for the information. It is very interesting.

What type of sites do you have? What do you host on your servers? Do you use Linux or MS?

      Nov 19, 2017 19:43 AM

Also, what are the pluses and minuses of AWS vs GCS? If you were just starting out which would you pick?

    Nov 19, 2017 19:31 PM

I use ebay a good bit as an alternative to amazon. In fact, for used equipment/goods and interaction with sellers, ebay is a far better platform. You almost develop a personal rapport with each seller. I love that.

Also, I NEVER hear of the CEO of Ebay trying to undermine politics via some other platform like you hear about Bezos/Washington Post. So, in that sense, the people who run Ebay do a better job of staying out of that fray much to their credit.

I also check out independent sellers who run their own websites for sales. We should “spread the weath” as much as we can. I use Amazon a good bit but they don’t need ALL my money.

      Nov 19, 2017 19:57 PM

Good point johnnygeneric. Ebay is more interactive and spreading the wealth peer to peer.

To some degree Amazon is still supporting small businesses with stores that utilize the Amazon marketplace to sell their items. The same with Ebay. If anything it has allowed some small businesses to be run as true home based businesses, or just a way for people to supplement their primary incomes. From that standpoint it displaced some big box stores, but created many more micro-businesses. It was bound to happen as the world got connected through technology.
