I have no problem with replacing analytical solutions to differential equations by computer solutions, as long as the students have equivalent skills.
The basic equations such as Maxwell’s laws still apply; it is only the way of solving them that may change.
Indeed, the advent of computer solution permits the addition of consideration of extra factors previously omitted in order to be able to obtain mathmatical solutions. We no longer have to assume constant physical parameters in order to have analytical solutions.
e.g. we all know parameters change with temperature, but usually assume they are constant when doing a calculation, even though the very act of passing a current through any material causes it to heat up. That can be handled on a computer, but not by simple math.
Well that’s an improvement….In California they would probably be released.
