I have been concerned about China for some time now. Why is the growth of their economy so poor?

China still only has a demographic growth rate of 1.18 children per family. (2.14 is needed for population maintenance) There is no lack of economic growth per member of the workforce; There is in general lack of apparent growth when the population actually declines.
Most young Chinese couples shoot for a boy and if they get him, they will be very satisfied with that one child. Only if they have a girl will they try again for a boy.
So either way, China cannot maintain its current population.
