The Ukrainians never “drove” the Russians back, the Russians withdrew in good order to reform on the Donbass lines. They shortened the line and began their grinding of Ukrainian troops.
This has worked very well for them to this point. The Russians have inflicted an estimated 120k casualties. Russia moved into Ukraine with 180-200k, had they taken anywhere near what Ukraine has suffered it would already be over.
