No, I am going with the Broncos.

      Jan 16, 2014 16:02 PM

Might have another bet here! Let’s see if, in fact, it is the Broncos vs. the Seahawks!

        Jan 16, 2014 16:46 PM

I hate to bet against former sc coach Pete Carroll
        But, I will consider it.

Everything’s going to pot if you ask me……check out CANN on Nasdaq!

Now you know why they call it “Mile High” Stadium

        Jan 16, 2014 16:48 PM

Hee hee! Most stocks with tickers starting in CANN are up a lot. I just looked at stockcharts.com. I see that POT ticker is already taken by another company. I suppose that there is maybe room one day for an ETF. Apparently, the ticker WEED is not taken!

          Jan 16, 2014 16:03 PM

Seriously, this could be a meaningfully large upcoming industry!

Hemp used to be a very large, legitimate industry early in America’s history. While I don’t advocate it’s use, I think it’s prohibition by virtue of mis-classifying it has done more harm than good.

Nixon (R), by executive order, declared it a narcotic to wage war on his political opponents (primarily the anti-(Vietnam)-war kids on college campuses). Seems those kids didn’t like being conscripted into a war for the drilling rights in the South China Sea, control of the export vertex of the Golden Triangle, and control of the SE Asia rice bowl–which was started on the false pretext of Gulf of Tonkin hoax. All three of which are more plausible than that Domino Theory….

All that aside, the costs of pot prohibition have outweighed the benefits. Not just the cost of the chase, but the costs of incarceration and the growth of the criminal element (including lots of illegal aliens) that runs the black market in it.

The Temperance Movement spearheaded by the religious self-righteous also produced more social ills at great costs than it solved. And now, just like alcohol, there will be those who use it there will be those who abuse it.

As a footnote: Tobacco is one of the most addictive drugs of all, but the feds subsidize the very same tobacco companies the states sue to cover the medical costs associated with tobacco. Go figure……..

      Jan 16, 2014 16:02 PM

      Yeh!

At our Men’s Breakfast Club Meeting this morning the local police chief had some interesting things to say about that!

    Jan 16, 2014 16:26 AM

    Or CBDS…….talk about lift off.

      Jan 16, 2014 16:48 PM

Maybe there is room for Potcoin to go with Bitcoin.

        Jan 16, 2014 16:05 PM

        You bet!

    Al:

According to the Drudge report this morning in their headline article, China is by far the largest consumer of world wide government debt. They are currently even purchasing more of the U.S debt which at first blush makes absolutely no sense unless there are guaranteed, iron clad agreements between China and other cash strapped countries.

Send us your gold and we will continue to purchase your debt. Could this explain the massive physical gold transfers into China or why the dollar has not declined further? I wonder how much is still in Fort Knox.

      Jan 16, 2014 16:05 PM

My thoughts exactly. Chatted a bit about this with Bob M earlier today.

    Jan 16, 2014 16:42 AM

If gold manages to hit a new low, I think $1155 will hold on a closing basis if not intraday. However, I don’t think gold will hit a new low.

Citi likes the miners for the first time in three years…

      Jan 16, 2014 16:06 PM

      Posted the article earlier.

I agree with your thoughts on a new low.

    Jan 16, 2014 16:48 AM

On a side note… watched as much of the Bernanke interview (being broadcast on CNBC) as I could — but the experience was so nauseating that I had to turn off the sound.

Alan Greenspan has spent several years now on the interview circuit trying to practice revisionist history and Bernanke is clearly going to try that same tactic.

The Bernanke quote that caused me to turn off the sound: (to paraphrase) “QE is a policy that works in practice but not in theory.”

No, Mr. Bernanke, it’s going to prove to be the exact opposite. Something that worked in theory but NOT in practice.

Judging the success of QE now is as meaningless as judging the merits of sub-prime loans during the height of the housing bubble. The aftermath is still to come.

Let’s see what happens when the Fed attempts to reduce the size of it’s 4 trillion dollar balance sheet — then tell me how successful their policies were. When the dollar is crushed and we are immersed in a global depression — then tell me how wonderful you are and how you saved the world in 2009.

Sickening. Absolutely sickening to listen to this blathering, ivory tower, idiot.

      Jan 16, 2014 16:54 AM

      Hear, hear…Eric…HEAR< HEAR!!

      Jan 16, 2014 16:31 AM

      Indeed.

These two will have a special, shameful, place in history.

      Jan 16, 2014 16:08 PM

Very unfortunately, I have to agree with you. And, I really mean “very unfortunately”!

    Jan 16, 2014 16:48 AM

James (the lesser), I hope you sold NUS before yesterday! I said one month ago that it might reach $140 —and it did. It went as low as $82 today. I think it will go much lower.

china has not increased its treasury holdings recently however we have a trade deficit with china which adds up. China holds about 1.2 trillion of treasuries (add in hong kong for another ~100 bil) but holds a couple of trillion in I guess what would be called accounts receivable or clearing for their exports to the US.

the data is out there –all one has to do is look for it. I woudl assume Walmart owes chines companies a chunk of that.

another thing with Gary as a reminder–it appears he is a short term trader-if you are a long term player in the PM market you can go crazy listening the daily chatter of the short term traders. I want to make $$ as much as the next person but sometimes the long term perspective works as well id not better than teh timers getting whipsawed.

Yes hal, I too am no longer among the young and restless. Sometimes the hardest thing to do is sit tight and ride it out.

      Jan 16, 2014 16:54 AM

I certainly want to be a long term holder I’m just not certain the bear is done yet.

      Jan 16, 2014 16:10 PM

Certainly works much better for me Hal!

I do enjoy the daily discussion because I think gold and silver prices are an excellent barometer of what is going on.

    Jan 16, 2014 16:55 AM

    Hal, absolutely!….of course!!…….:)

    Jan 16, 2014 16:09 AM

    GOOD NEWS GARY tanks !

      Jan 16, 2014 16:48 PM

      yes yes ! manipulation !

    Jan 16, 2014 16:06 PM

yes i sold nuskin at $126.

waiting for this crash to end and then might buy some back.

the lower the better at this point!

still holding onto bitcoin, it is now stablizing nicely and expect it to be calm for a while and slowly appreciate over time

      Jan 16, 2014 16:26 PM

Congratulations on a huge gain. Even without the news that hit the stock, I’m convinced that selling when you did would still have proven to be the right move. Now, at $83, NUS is still trading at 9x book and 9x cash. There are many lower risk opportunities out there even if you stick with conventional stocks.

    Jan 16, 2014 16:49 PM

thanks. i agree. it was a very nice gain and i did not want to happen with nus that happened with gold. still holding all my gold, might add more.
