Oil, Gold, and US Markets – Very different movements but is it still a buy the dip mentality?
Joel Elconin, Co-Host of the Benzinga Pre-Market Prep Show joins us to discuss the moves in oil, gold, and Amazon. We look at the short term charts and a couple key levels for both oil and gold and comment big picture on the defensive trade to kick off the trading week in the US. We also talk broad markets and Amazon stock, where the markets are falling today and Amazon is breaking out.
It needs a lift off then it will look similar to Amazon Lol. Maybe sooner or later that golden cross kicks in?
Gold won’t look like AMZN even if this is the low but there’s been a directional correlation with some moves extending for one but not the other. This low for gold appears to correlate with Amazon’s low of a month ago.
Counter moves at golden or death crosses are common.

Today’s action could have been the result of the long weekend for the US that other markets didn’t have (Canada, Australia, etc.). I’ve seen it many times; the market attempts to correct or neutralize all kinds of disruptive situations or events to move on without technical/psychological “unsettled business”. Covid is an example. Gold double bottomed at the pre-covid high, the high before it became news.
Whatever is happening, the metals need to move.

Based on how kodiak has traded heading into drilling results being released along with a cc I said expectations are extremely low and if results aren’t spectacular enough a sell off will ensue…..never saw pics this time of core boxes with smiley faces on them

Welcome to “run the stops” and “panic sell” day. Take a look how far the spreads are on your miners. If you want to sell something, it will cost more today. If you do decide the price is worth it, then you will bust someone’s stop. It appears a better day to but with cash balances. Point is that it appears to be a day to “shake confidence”. Ask yourself why they would want miners to get cheaper than they already are.
Hi David. Yes, it is another red day in the miners, but overall not too bad, as the GDX and GDXJ are down less than a percent. The juniors are a bit more higher torque, but even across the board in my portfolio I’m only down about 1.5% on the day, so not really a panic sell, just more selling pressure. I added to about a dozen stocks yesterday with some of my remaining dry powder, and wish I had more funds to deploy, but may fortify a few more positions today into this weakness and then hold from here and see how much longer we slog through the summer doldrums. My initial losses were 7-8% but a lot of that was Emerita. Once I saw what they were doing, I looked around to sell something, but not only were the spreds abnormal but I figured they would run what ever I wanted back up and I would lose on both ends. I decided to go trim bushes away from the house for a pending paint job instead. Losses down to about 2 and a half % with most of tha Emerita, so I need to go work outside on something else and wait for good things to come.

AMZN and gold have been well correlated for the last two years so today’s breakout just might be a good sign for gold.
