I had just hit “publish” on this morning’s blog , that patient little reflection on the Supreme Court’s extended silence over President Trump’s emergency tariffs, the sort of quiet that makes one wonder if the justices are all simply enjoying a very long tea break, when a video from the Federal Reserve account appeared.on my horizon. Jerome Powell, composed as ever, addressing the US about grand jury subpoenas served on Friday, with the threat of criminal indictment hanging over his testimony from last June. I stared at the screen, black coffee steaming in hand (the fourth cup, or possibly the fifth; precision in such matters evaporates), and felt the unmistakable jolt of something properly seismic.
One does not simply close the tab and proceed to toast. No, one refills the mug, opens a fresh document, and begins typing while the brew is still hot enough to scald the tongue. This is no minor skirmish; this is the President of the United States openly attacking the Central Bankers, and doing so with the sort of creative prosecutorial flair that history reserves for its more memorable takedowns.
Recall Al Capone. The man ran an empire of vice, murder, racketeering, the lot. Yet what finally sent him away? Not the bodies in the river or the breweries humming away illegally. Tax evasion. A seemingly trivial matter of paperwork and undeclared income. The authorities, unable or unwilling to make the bigger charges stick cleanly, found a side door through the accounts. The Central Bankers, those guardians of rates and reserves, have long attracted similar accusations,.echoes of Thomas Jefferson himself, who viewed banking establishments as more dangerous than standing armies, and who warned that allowing private control over currency would lead to swindling on a grand scale. (Whether he phrased it in precisely the terms that circulate today is beside the point; the sentiment is unmistakable.)
Are the modern custodians of the Federal Reserve now facing a parallel fate?
Not for the grand theft of the nation’s wealth, not for inflation as a hidden tax, not for the quiet erosion of purchasing power that Jefferson feared would leave future generations impoverished. No, the hook is a building renovation. Cost overruns on the historic headquarters, disputed testimony about marble and fixtures and the like. A multi-billion-dollar project turned into the pretext for subpoenas and the shadow of indictment.
The Fed positions itself as a collection of dutiful civil servants, simply following evidence and data in setting rates, even when those rates prove inconvenient to executive desires for cheaper borrowing and faster growth. They will frame this escalation as an assault on independence, perhaps with careful nods toward dictatorial overreach. The other side sees crooks defrauding the American people by politically engineering higher rates to undermine a presidency by sabotaging recovery, inflating costs, all under the guise of neutral policy.
It is marvellous in its irony. The great clash over monetary sovereignty, the very thing Jefferson distrusted so deeply, reduced to arguments about contractors’ invoices and congressional disclosures. If the charges stick, it will not be because the Fed has been caught pillaging the treasury in broad daylight. It will be because the paperwork did not add up in quite the approved fashion. Al Capone would recognise the manoeuvre instantly.
And the markets, those twitchy indicators of public confidence?
They have already cast their vote. The dollar weakened as the news spread. Equity futures slipped lower. But gold and silver? They responded with what can only be described as delight. Gold pushed past $4600/oz claiming a fresh record as though it had been patiently waiting for this exact moment to assert itself. Silver climbed even more sharply, touching new highs around $84/oz amid a rush of buyers seeking refuge in the incorruptible.
These are the metals that do not answer subpoenas, that cannot be indicted for misspoken testimony. Gold sits there like the unflappable observer who has witnessed every institutional drama without once changing expression. Silver, more animated, arrives ready to capitalise on the uncertainty. Together they remind us that when trust in paper systems frays, when central bankers and presidents lock horns over who truly controls the levers, people instinctively reach for what endures.
The coffee is still hot, the keyboard obliging, and the day has veered from contemplative patience into something far more kinetic. Explosive events have that effect. They expose the absurdities beneath the surface, where grand principles collide with petty pretexts, and where the price of safety suddenly gleams a little brighter.
I shall stop here before the caffeine entirely deserts me. But note the date: the 12th of January 2026. The day a renovation budget became the unlikely instrument for challenging the very independence of the central bank,.and the metals remembered why they have always been the quiet winners in such affairs.
