Dave Erfle – Gold Correction, Juniors Outperforming, $2.1B M&A Deal

May 13, 2025

Dave Erfle, founder and editor of The Junior Miner Junky, joins me to break down the latest moves in the precious metals markets and what they could mean for investors.

We begin with Monday’s sharp correction in gold and major mining stocks, driven by trade deal optimism between the U.S. and China. Dave explains why silver held up surprisingly well and what the resilience in juniors might signal about sector rotation.

Key topics include:

  • A closer look at Pan American Silver’s $2.1B acquisition of MAG Silver – one of the biggest silver M&A deals in years.

  • The disconnect between strong ETF gold inflows and weak fund flows into GDX and senior miners.

  • How Newmont’s Q1 free cash flow surge and broad-based earnings strength are attracting generalist investors.

  • Why a potential 15% gold price correction to $2,950-$3,000 could be healthy for the ongoing bull market.

  • Outlook for continued silver M&A, with majors hunting for growth through acquisition.

We also touch on the macro backdrop, including the latest CPI data and the stagflation risk narrative building in U.S. markets. Dave highlights what he’s watching next, and why juniors with strong bases could be the next big winners in this cycle.

Watch what Giustra does with WRLG, once it starts spinning off real cash. I have seen his business model before. DT

I’m skeptical of these big hits coming from WRLG and the timing. You might remember similar big numbers coming from I-80 before they imploded and showed their CEO the window.

I know what FG, Hilly and Billy have done but as long as they are out and about there is nothing that I can do about it, or you for that matter. Other than get into specifics and that will be a rehash that won’t matter to any but those who know what is happening and then it won’t change anything anyway. DT

Just imagine hiring a bot to clean, do laundry, cook. So you come home after work, the place is a mess, no dinner and the bot is on the couch watching TV

Historical comparisons cited in this interview don’t consider the cost of capital. 10-year yields weren’t 4.4+ percent in 2011. Since the 2015 lows, the cost of capital has increased as much as the price of gold. Ignoring this fact and focusing solely on the POG will lead to more disappointment and disillusionment with investments in the sector.

Gold back below $3200 and Nvidia back over $135. Interesting times indeed. 🤔

With NVDA now the most overbought it’s been in a year (daily chart) I want to see how it deals with the $140 area this week. You can see on the following chart why that level matters. It’s really not $140 that matters but the 10% level above the 40 week moving average which happens to at almost $140 currently.

Damn. Typing on the phone always gets a misspelling but my name. 🙄…..yeah Matthew it’s stunning how these beloved stocks get so overbought on nothing material really changing with the company to justify it. I can’t imagine it breaking through the $140’s without a consolidation first which is exactly why it will happen. 😏
